Gerik crash: Victims' bodies sent to HRPB, Gerik Hospital — Zambry
KUALA LUMPUR: The remains of the 13 victims from the collision involving the bus carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students along the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, near Tasik Banding, early today have been taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh for post-mortem.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said two other bodies would undergo post-mortem at Gerik Hospital, where those injured in the crash are also being treated.
He said that the ministry was also coordinating accommodation assistance for the victims' families, together with Ungku Omar Polytechnic, Ipoh and Gerik Community College.
"I am on the way to the Ipoh hospital to meet the victims' families. I ask that we all pray for ease in our affairs and for all the families involved. May they be granted strength and patience.
"Insya-Allah, the ministry and UPSI have deployed whatever form of aid to be given to all those involved. UPSi has also set up an operations room with a hotline," he posted on his social media accounts.
Zambry also confirmed, in the same post, that so far, 15 people from UPSI were killed in this morning's crash.
Earlier, the Hulu Perak Civil Defence Force (APM) District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) said that at least 15 people were killed in the crash involving 48 people.
UPSI deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin, when contacted, said the accident involved 42 university students who were returning to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, from Jertih, Terengganu, by chartered bus after the Aidiladha celebration. – BERNAMA

Dr Wan Azizah visits UPSI students in Taiping Hospital
TAIPING: Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, today visited students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) who were involved in an accident on the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik on Monday. She arrived at the hospital at about 10.25 am and was received by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad's wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin as well as Taiping Hospital director Dr Khuzaini Abd Karim. Dr. Wan Azizah was taken to the ward to visit four victims, comprising three female students and one male student, who are still receiving treatment at the hospital. She spent about an hour inquiring about the victims' condition and also providing support to the family members who were in the ward. Dr Wan Azizah also presented personal contributions from the Prime Minister to all four victims. In the incident on Monday, 15 UPSI students died when the chartered bus they were travelling in from Jertih, Terengganu to their main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza car on the JRTB route. The accident also resulted in 33 individuals being injured, including the bus driver and conductor as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

JERTIH, June 13 — Nearly a year ago, Mohamad Isma Abdul Manaf sent off his eldest daughter, Nur Dalila Farhana, to university with the hope that she would return home with a degree. But fate had other plans. Instead of a degree, today, the 47-year-old father received his daughter's death certificate. Nur Dalila Farhana, 21, was among the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak, on Monday. 'It tore me apart to see my daughter's name on a death certificate. No parent ever wishes to face that, but this is my fate. I have to accept it and stay strong,' he told Bernama after receiving the document from Terengganu National Registration Department (NRD) director Mohamad Nasir Kareem at the family's home in Kampung Bharu Tok Dhor here. Mohamad Isma said that the death certificate in hand would ease matters for him and his wife, Norinda Kasim, 49, in handling other affairs, such as insurance claims and related issues. The crash occurred when the chartered bus, en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle before overturning. The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. Meanwhile, Mohamad Nasir said that eight death certificates were handed over to the next of kin at their respective residences today, adding that five others were collected by family members at the NRD counters, whereas two more are still being processed.
