A Jersey woman has warned about road safety in St Saviour following a decision to build more homes near Five Oaks.On Thursday, a planning committee approved proposals for 38 on land between Les Cinq Chenes estate and St Michael's School.Resident Patricia Blandin said: "You take your life in your hands every time you cross a road. I run, cycle, walk in this area every day and it's a nightmare, absolute nightmare."Developer Andium Homes said that traffic concerns had been taken into account.
The development, which will be built near the Les Cinq Chênes estate, has sparked fears that more housing will exacerbate traffic problems in the area, particularly around St Saviour's School, which lacks a zebra crossing for pedestrian safety."I think they need to have more play areas for the kids and safe roads," resident Sandra said.Errol Mittoo added: "If you don't leave early enough in the morning, the traffic is built up so much down there. If they're going to build more houses, that's going to mean more cars."
Andium Homes, the island's largest provider of social housing, has reassured the public that traffic concerns had been taken into account. Jonny Gough from the firm said: "The option we have chosen is two access options onto Rue des Friquettes, and that is deemed the best and most suitable and safest option for this site."Despite these assurances, questions remained about the safety of vehicle movements in the area, particularly near St Michael's School.
St Saviour's Constable Kevin Lewis voted against the development, arguing that the parish had already absorbed new housing:"We're doing our fair share, but enough is enough in St Saviour now," he said.Deputy Sam Mézec, Minister for Housing, acknowledged the difficulty of the issue. "We have a housing crisis and people who are desperate for family-sized homes," he said. However, he warned against excessive development that could lead to "concreting over the whole island".Andium hoped people would be able to move into these new homes by the end of 2026. There were currently more than 150 families waiting for a three- or four-bedroom rental and 700 people on the Help to Buy scheme.

Sandra, 50 said her daughter, Paige could be upset by the move."Since she has been here she has settled really well."She is autistic and has ADHD and so with those learning difficulties, they have done so much for her."So I'm quite worried really."She has had the same teacher since nursery and she doesn't respond to change well, so it could have a drastic effect on her." Carl, 35, who has two children at the school, said: "I couldn't believe it, I was really shocked."There is another school not too far away but they will miss their mates."They say they are closing it because the number of kids but when I'm here there seems to be loads of kids."Danielle said her daughter Bella was the last of her three children to have Snape Wood. "My eldest really struggled, then got a good teacher but when she left my daughter got left and didn't know what to do so that came out as being naughty - but she's doing better at senior school."My other two know how to learn so they have flown through - so it's been a mixed experience."My daughter's class is quite small, there's about 15 kids in it, and that's because so many have left."But it's not good that it's closing because the parents and kids are going to have to uproot and go further afield."

Diamond couple who met in Wishaw café celebrate 60 years of married life
A Wishaw couple have a loving sparkle in their eyes as they celebrate 60 years of married life. Arthur and Sandra Murphy marked their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in the company of their large family. Arthur, 77, and Sandra, 76, first met over the juke box at Johnny Gallagher's Cafe in Pather. The couple, married when they were teenagers in love at St Thomas's Church on April 24, 1965. The first place they called home after tying the knot was a caravan in someone's garden before getting a house in Craigneuk, and then settling down in Rannoch Drive in Pather as the family outgrew their original home. The couple would go on to have seven children, Sandra who was named after her mum and is now 59 – was the first to arrive, she was followed less than a year later by sister Lillian, 58. The couple's first boy arrived next, Owen, 56, then came Winnie (Winifred), 55. Sadly, their sibling Elaine who was the next of the children died less than two years ago, aged 49. Arthur and Sandra had two more children, Lesley Anne, 48, and the baby of the family Alex, who is 45. Daughter Lesley Anne, joked: 'There was no telly back then. They had seven children in the space of 15 years. 'They lived in Craigneuk for a few years, Winnie was born in Craigneuk and Elaine was born in 1974 in Rannoch Drive.' Arthur worked in Ravenscraig where he was a driver sub-contracted to British Steel, but with so many mouths to feed he was also a butcher in a shop in Gowkthrapple. 'He worked double shifts as he had seven weans to feed,' Lesley Anne added. 'He had three jobs at one time I'm sure. 'When Ravenscraig shut down he became a taxi driver in Wishaw, so he is well known. 'My mum worked as a cleaner at the Law Hospital as well as looking after all of us. Our granny lived local so we spent a lot of time there.' The family would enjoy holidays to Arbroath as well as trips to Ayr. Arthur and Sandra still enjoy getting away a couple of times each year. Arthur and Sandra have 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren with another on the way. The couple remain very independent but now live in a warden-assisted retirement complex in Overtown. Arthur enjoys gardening to wile away the time and Sandra has always loved the bingo and travels over to the one in Hamilton following the closure of the one in Wishaw. Lesley Anne puts the secret of their happy and lengthy marriage down to working hard for each other and for their family. She added: 'They are well-liked and have the best friends. They did it for the seven of us and we are so grateful.'
