Citytv's ‘Law & Order Toronto' leads Canadian Screen Award nominations with 20 nods
Citytv's 'Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent' got the most nominations overall with 20, including one for best drama series, acting nominations for leads Kathleen Munroe and Aden Young, and a supporting acting nod for Karen Robinson.
The haul means the show comes in third for most TV nominations since the Screen Awards were established 13 years ago, behind only 'Schitt's Creek,' which nabbed 26 nominations in 2020, and 21 nominations in 2021.
Meanwhile, the Winnipeg-set absurdist dramedy 'Universal Language' leads the film races with 13 nominations, including for best film, best directing and best original screenplay.
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced nominees in 149 film, television, and digital media categories.
The Screen Awards will be handed out at five ceremonies in Toronto from May 30 to June 1, culminating in a gala hosted by comic Lisa Gilroy and set to stream live on CBC Gem.
Matthew Rankin's 'Universal Language' tops the film contenders a month after winning a $50,000 prize from the Toronto Film Critics Association. Its Screen Award tally makes it the third-most nominated film ever, tying with 'Mommy' in 2015.
It competes for the best film trophy against 'The Apprentice,' 'Darkest Miriam,' 'Gamma Rays,' 'Village Keeper' and 'Who Do I Belong To.'
'Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent' will vie for best drama series against CBC's 'Allegiance' and 'Bones of Crows,' Hollywood Suite's 'Potluck Ladies' and CTV's 'Sight Unseen.'
Three TV series tied with 12 nominations: CTV's sitcom 'Children Ruin Everything,' CBC's Indigenous historical drama 'Bones of Crows' and family comedy 'Run the Burbs.'
Meanwhile, CBC's sports coverage of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics got 11 nominations and 'The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal' from Amazon Prime Video Canada is this year's most nominated documentary series with seven.
The best comedy series race is between CBC's 'One More Time,' CTV's 'Children Ruin Everything,' Crave's 'Late Bloomer' and 'The Office Movers,' and Crave/APTN's 'Don't Even.'
Other leading film nominees announced Wednesday include David Cronenberg's 'The Shrouds' with nine, and Sam McGlynn's 'Deaner '89' and Karen Chapman's 'Village Keeper,' which each nabbed seven.
Last year's Screen Awards were hosted by Canadian comic Mae Martin, who hosted a gala in front of an audience in Toronto, which was then whittled down to an hour-long special that aired hours after the event on CBC and CBC Gem.

Netflix just added a new season of No. 1 romantic drama show — 'Sullivan's Crossing' season 3 has finally arrived
If you spent the last few weeks binge-watching the first two seasons of "Sullivan's Crossing" on Netflix, you've no doubt been wondering when the streaming service would be getting the latest episodes. If you're not up to speed, "Sullivan's Crossing" is a romantic drama based on books penned by Robyn Carr (the same author behind the "Virgin River" novels). The "Sullivan's Crossing" adaptation originally aired on CTV and The CW, before making its way to Netflix in early July, where it's been a mainstay of the streamer's top 10 list ever since. As of today, (August 11), we've got good news: "Sullivan's Crossing" season 3 is now streaming on Netflix, meaning fans of shows like "Virgin River" or romance in general now have 10 new episodes of soapy drama to look forward to streaming. Below, you can find a little more info about "Sullivan's Crossing" season 3 (and an update on the show's future. If you aren't quite caught up yet, don't read on, though — there are spoilers ahead! "Sullivan's Crossing" season 3 continues to follow the life of Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) and her time in the titular town. Here's the series synopsis for the third season, from The CW: "Having finally confessed her love to Cal Jones (Chad Michael Murray, "One Tree Hill") and still reeling from the aftermath of Rob's diner fire, Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan, "When Hope Calls") makes the decision to leave her carer as a neurosurgeon behind to help run her father, Sully Sullivan's (Scott Patterson, "Gilmore Girls") campground. But trading the adrenaline of the OR for a slower paced life at the Crossing won't be easy and Maggie will be faced with many challenges as she continues her journey from the Head to the Heart." In addition to Kohan, Murray and Patterson, "Sullivan's Crossing" also stars Tom Jackson, Andrea Menard, Allan Hawco, Lynda Boyd, Peter Outerbridge, and more. Yes! Back when the first two seasons hit Netflix, Deadline revealed that The CW — where "Sullivan's Crossing" airs in the US — had renewed the romantic drama for a fourth season. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The news came just ahead of the "Sullivan's Crossing" season 3 finale, which aired on The CW on July 16, and confirmed the show would be returning for another 10-episode run in 2026. "I'm very excited with the Season 4 renewal and am extremely grateful to have supportive partners who understand the value of my brand as well as the importance of producing comfort programming", said executive producer, Roma Roth. "It's very gratifying to know "Sullivan's Crossing" is resonating so well with our global audience." If "Sullivan's Crossing" continues to perform as well as it has done thus far, it likely won't be disappearing anytime soon, either: in the same report, CW President Brad Schwartz said the show "still has a lot of runway left," too. Law Roach Is The Best Part Of "Project Runway"
Earlier this month, Project Runway returned to our screen with some new and familiar faces. Most notably, Heidi Klum has returned as host and judge of the notable series. Nina Garcia, editor-in-chief of Elle Magazine, is also a returning face. Christian Siriano, Season 4 winner and acclaimed fashion designer, returns this season as the designers' mentor (replacing Tim Gunn). Last, but certainly not least, to round out the panel of permanent judges is none other than celebrity stylist and image architect, Law Roach. Most notably, Law Roach has worked with Celine Dion, Anya Taylor Joy, and, of course, Zendaya. As a long-time fan of both the series AND of Law, I was excited to see what kind of energy he'd bring to the table and, let's just say, he BRINGS IT. Law has never shied away from speaking his truth, and speak his truth he does! I want to be Law Roach when I grow up. In the Season 21 premiere, the designers were broken up into teams — House of (Disney) Villains and House of (Disney) Princesses. House of Villains took home the W this week, and it's so cool to have Law on the panel because he can speak not only to the now, but also to who is relevant. Like, as a designer, I obviously want my clothes to be well received, but to have a celeb stylist want to put a famous person in my clothes? Chef's kiss. Law also has an amazing eye for detail! Nothing gets past Law! "Hate is such a big word." "It's a short word. It's only four letters." LAW!! Gooped and gagged. "Nigerian auntie" took me out. AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE TOP LOOKS! As a Nigerian woman / future Nigerian auntie, I see what Law meant and I have to say, I completely agree. In a full circle moment, Law was brutal — but honest! — in regards to Jesus' look last week. The following week? Law gave credit where credit was due! This goes to show that it's not personal, it's fashion! A look is a look is a look! The challenge for Week 2 was to create a cohesive day-to-night athleisure collection to be produced by Calia, a women's luxury active wear line. Law was quick to hone in on one of the looks from the losing collection. Law said, "there will be no cultural appropriation on my watch!" I will start saying this: Say it louder, Law! "It's not called America's Next Top Best Friend." The internet is also loving Law's addition to the franchise: Needless to say, I will be tuning into Disney+ every week to watch Law in action.
