Miami-Dade streets may soon sing with hip-hop names
"Trick Love the Kids" and "We da Best" could soon adorn street signs in Miami-Dade County, as a proposal to rename streets after iconic hip-hop lyrics from local artists gained traction Tuesday.
Commissioner Keon Hardemon, spearheading the initiative, aims to transform the 18th corridor in Liberty City into a musical tourist attraction, fostering community pride.
Hardemon's proposal, presented to the county commission, seeks to rename over 20 streets with popular song titles and phrases, celebrating artists like Trick Daddy, DJ Khaled and City Girls, all hailing from the area.
"What we are doing right now is we're trying to change the name of the streets to our music," Hardemon said, envisioning a revitalization of the neighborhood.
"I want people to feel good about their place," Hardemon told CBS News Miami, emphasizing the goal of instilling a sense of pride and ownership.
"You don't have to leave the community to live in a better neighborhood; you can stay right here."
Hardemon believes the street names will draw visitors, creating photo opportunities and boosting local recognition for both the community and its artists.
"It gives people reason to come to 18th Ave., and actually take a picture next to one of the signs," he said.
The proposal, however, was deferred and will return to the commission's agenda on March 18 for further consideration.

Ventura claimed in her lawsuit that around this time, she and Combs were actually on a break and he was so 'enraged' by her budding romance with Kid Cudi that he threatened to 'blow up' the 'Day 'n' Nite' rapper's car. 'Around that time, Kid Cudi's car exploded in his driveway,' Cassie's court documents alleged — which Cudi told the New York Times was 'true.' Ventura and Combs sparked engagement speculation in February 2014 when the Grammy winner posted a picture of a diamond ring that his then-girlfriend was later spotted sporting. 'Baby do you like it?' he captioned the Instagram upload at the time. 'I just want to get you wat [sic] you Like! I just wanna [make] you smile #takeDat!' Combs and the model never addressed whether a proposal took place. In December 2015, Ventura posted — and deleted — an Instagram photo of a resting baby, writing, 'How I sleep … knowing that I'm single and nobody cheating on me.' Breakup rumors swirled the following summer when a source told Page Six that Ventura 'was acting very much like a single woman' at a party. TMZ also reported that an 'explosive argument' had taken place between the two in August 2016. However, the couple subsequently reconciled. Combs gave a glimpse into his relationship dynamic in a 2016 'Breakfast Club' interview, saying, '25 percent of your time, you're gonna just feel like, 'Aw man, I hate being here, this guy, aw man, he cheated on me, he lied on me.' 'But then there's 75 percent of 'I'ma make you the happiest woman in the whole wide world,'' he continued. ''And I promise you'll smile the most.'' South Florida gets windfall with Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, Fort Lauderdale Air Show on same weekend
Both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties are enjoying a windfall this weekend. That's thanks to the Miami Grand Prix in Miami Gardens and the Air Show in Fort Lauderdale. CBS News Miami shows you how big of a bang these events are for South Florida. High-octane entertainment on the streets and in the skies Andrew Austin's wife's birthday lands on the same weekend as the Fort Lauderdale Air Show. "It's her birthday month. So this kicks off the month," he said. Austin goes to the Fort Lauderdale Air Show every year because everything he wants to see is on the beach and in the sky. "Tent, food, beer. It's all covered," he said. Chris Dirato with the air show said tens of thousands of people are expected to flock to the shores to see the show in the sky. "People come from far and wide, they're spending money at restaurants, so they're obviously spending money at the hotels, there's obviously a big economic impact," he said. South Florida got a two-fer: If you like speed in the air, you went to Fort Lauderdale beach for the air show. And, if you like speed in the streets, there was the Miami Grand Prix in Miami Gardens. The Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that around a quarter of a million people come to Miami Gardens for the event. Victor Jimenez came here from Arizona for the Formula 1 races. Jimenez said the fast cars were fun, but he added that next time, he won't stay in Miami Beach and will pick a hotel closer to the track. "It took me two hours to come over here," Jimenez said. "I left at 10 a.m. By the time I was here, it was noon." Back at the beach, Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue said they're expecting spring break-level crowds, so they'll be doubling and tripling their resources on certain blocks. They're warning that it may be dangerous to watch the show in the ocean due to rip currents. Austin said it's definitely a beach day, just not a swimming day. "It is a sitting day and watching," Austin said.

Miami couple share their journey with ALS, finding new ways to heal from the disease
2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the Walk to Defeat ALS. One Miami couple has been very transparent about their journey fighting the disease, even serving as ambassadors for ALS South Florida, but this year, they will not be able to walk. Maria Fernandez and her husband, Jules Rodriguez, told CBS News Miami they don't take a single moment together for granted. "Last October, we thought he was gone. There was a night in the hospital where we both thought, 'That was it' — it ended up not being it, so anything after that has been a bonus," Fernandez said. "Incredible, beautiful, bonus time." The couple has been documenting their journey with ALS from the very beginning on Instagram and with a podcast. They said they very quickly, they found out that the more they shared their story, the more they found ways to heal. "You could just either feel like it's just oh poor us, or wow like look at this life, look at this love, look at this courage, look at this resilience," Fernandez said. Rodriguez lost his voice, and the muscles in his head and neck progressively weakened along with those in the rest of his body due to ALS. Doctors were worried that he might not be able to breathe on his own for much longer, so they inserted a tube into his windpipe to help him breathe. The procedure extended his life, but it also brought an end to his ability to speak. Rodriguez is now able to communicate through a machine that uses eye gaze technology and AI cloning of his voice. Using the machine to communicate, Rodriguez described the moments he is most grateful for. "I am so grateful for my wife. Without her, I would have died a long time ago. She has been there through the darkest times of my life, and she keeps me in check, too. My son and his love, he is only eight years old, but he is more caring and supportive than most adults, plus he is pretty funny too. I am grateful for the friends and family who have helped us throughout the years," he said. "It truly takes a village to live with this disease." Rodriguez has managed to keep his sense of humor, too. He uses his AI voice for comedy performances — a groundbreaking achievement, delivering a stand-up comedy set. "I also realize the time I have left in this world doesn't have to be filled with sadness and anger," he said. They said they hope their love for each other, compassion, and resilience are an inspiration for whatever adversity others may face. "The past five years have been so, so, so hard and I don't know how much longer we have together, but I know that for whatever reason, my husband, myself, my son and I were brought together to figure this really hard thing out, and just like us, there are so many families out there, that are going through the same," Fernandez said. Although the couple won't be able to attend this year's walk, they want to encourage others to walk on their behalf and for other people in the community fighting the disease. The 2025 Walk to Defeat ALS Miami will be at Florida International University Biscayne Bay Campus on Saturday.
