West Bengal: Cabinet okays job to families of Balasore train tragedy victims
Thirteen of the 296 persons who died in the accident were residents of West Bengal.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat. The Cabinet decided to give them home guards jobs in the police department.
In one of the country's worst railway disasters, Chennai-bound Coromandel Express rammed into a stationary goods train at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, Odisha, on the evening of June 2, 2023. Minutes later, the coaches derailed in the collision were hit from the opposite direction by the Yeshvantpur Express that was going towards Howrah.
The Cabinet also announced to allocate 40 acres land to Titagarh Rail Systems Limited for extension of the existing facility to manufacture Vande Bharat train coaches. The land will be given to the rail coach factory on a lease of 99 years for Rs 126 crore. The plot is located adjacent to TRSL's current 34-acre plant in Uttarpara in Kotrung and Bhadreswar in the Hooghly district.
The Cabinet decided to change the provision of widow and old age allowances. So far, the social welfare office was in charge of the approval of the allowances in the Kolkata Corporation. But from now, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner can approve the allowances. The administration has argued that the process will be faster, simpler and transparent under the new system. The beneficiaries will get quick allowances in this process, the state government claimed.
Speaking at the meeting, the CM expressed concern over the harassment of Bengali-speaking people in other states. Stating that such injustice cannot be tolerated, she said peaceful protests need to be organised.
A minister said, 'In the meeting, the CM asked ministers to take out with rallies in the districts to support Bengali migrant workers who were being humiliated in the other states. She also said on July 21, the TMC will organise the Martyrs Day rally was done in the past.' — PTI inputs

2 held in cheating case involving fake US currency exchange
The Chandigarh Police has arrested two persons accused in a cheating and fraud case involving fake US currency exchange. The accused have been identified as Mohammad Hazrat (32), a resident of Mundi Kharar, Mohali, and Sangam (35), of Kajheri village, Sector 52, Chandigarh. Both are unemployed. According to the police, a case was registered on the complaint of Ashish Kumar, a resident of Zirakpur, who works in accounts branch of a Kharar-based firm. On July 31, Ashish was approached by Hazrat, who claimed to possess $4,000 and offered to sell it at half the market rate. The meeting was fixed in Burail, Sector 45, where Ashish arrived with Rs 1.70 lakh. Hazrat, accompanied by associates, allegedly showed him two bundles of $20 notes in a small bag and, after taking the money, handed over the bag. When Ashish opened it later, it was empty. The accused neither delivered the dollars nor returned the cash. Both suspects were arrested on August 7, after being identified by the complainant. Police said further investigation is underway, and the duo will be produced in court for judicial custody.

‘Police pinned me to ground, broke my bangles: Mother of RG Kar victim ‘injured' in lathicharge during protest, hospitalised
THE PARENTS of a junior postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last year, allegedly suffered injuries during a police lathicharge in Kolkata on Saturday, during their 'Nabanna Abhiyan' march towards the state secretariat. The mother has been admitted to a private hospital, sources said. The parents have claimed they were both beaten up by Kolkata Police personnel deputed at Park Street crossing as part of an attempt to stop the rally. The police, however, have denied all the allegations. The victim's mother claimed that her 'Shankha and pola' (bangles which Bengali married women wear) broke during the police lathicharge. 'Police tried to block us by putting up barricades. Why are you scared of us? We have no weapons, we just came here to seek justice for my daughter,' the mother said. 'Police pinned me to the ground. They broke my 'shankha' (traditional conch shell bangle) and I suffered an injury on my forehead,' the victim's mother alleged. 'The parents have not been detained. There is no allegation of the parents being injured during the lathi charge. If any allegations come then we will certainly look into them,' DC (Port) Harikrishna Pai told mediapersons. After she was injured, the victim's mother was taken to a hospital and after primary observation and treatment, she was admitted. According to the hospital sources, she is now stable. 'She has a haematoma (closed wound where blood collects) on the forehead. A CT scan will be done to assess the extent of both internal and external injuries and also whether she has any internal haemorrhage or not,' a hospital official said. 'The condition of the father is comparatively better. He will not be admitted but he will accompany his wife,' a hospital source said. Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said, 'She will be kept in observation and a CT scan will be done. She was crying and trying to talk but I did not. I think she is feeling ashamed that she was beaten up for asking for justice for her daughter.' On hearing about the victim's mother's injury, the protesting junior doctors including Asfaqullah Nayiya, Debashish Halder and others went to see her. 'We did not meet her because she is not well now,' Halder said. 'This administration always tries to only stop any protest movement by using force. Earlier, they did so with us also. We did not support this Nabanna Abhiyan. Thus, we did not take part but how can police lathicharge on a peaceful demonstration? It is not acceptable,' Asfaqullah said. Another rally – 'Kalighat Chalo' – was organised by Abhaya Mancha and other a-political organisations but it was also blocked at the Hazra More on Saturday evening. Sabina Yasmin – the mother of nine-year-old Tamanna Khatun who died in an alleged crude bomb attack during a TMC rally at Kaliganj in June this year – was also present in the rally. 'I also did not get justice… like the parents of the RG Kar victim. They did not think for a second before killing my nine-year-old daughter,' Yasmin said. Meanwhile, TMC leader Debangshu Bhattacharya alleged that the BJP is 'creating disturbance'. 'We have already said that BJP is doing this march to create disturbance. They insulted the sentiments of a mother who lost her daughter just a year ago,' he said.
