Paranormal investigator Dan Rivera dies while on Tour with 'Annabelle,' an allegedly haunted doll

NBC News16-07-2025
Dan Rivera, a paranormal investigator and a handler of 'Annabelle,' a doll that's rumored to be possessed by evil spirits, has died.
Rivera, 54, died on July 13, 2025 in a Gettysburg, Pennsylvania hotel room, Adams County Chief Deputy Coroner Scott Pennewill tells TODAY.com.
'His death was nothing suspicious,' says Pennewill. 'The coroner's office and the state police were called to the scene on Sunday night ... he did go for an autopsy today and it's pending.'
Pennewill says Rivera's autopsy results will likely be available within 60 to 90 days.
Pennewill tells TODAY.com that the Annabelle doll was not present at the scene and that Rivera was found alone. He says that Annabelle might have been inside a van in the hotel parking lot, although he cannot officially confirm the doll's location.
Rivera's death was announced on Facebook by the 'New England Society for Psychic Research' (NESPR).
'It's with deep sadness that Tony, Wade, and I share the sudden passing of our close friend and partner, Dan Rivera,' read a Facebook post by the NESPR. 'We are heartbroken and still processing this loss. Dan truly believed in sharing his experiences and educating people on the paranormal. His kindness and passion touched everyone who knew him. Thank you for your support and kind thoughts during this difficult time.'
A spokesperson for the New England Society for Psychic Research did not immediately return an email for comment from TODAY.com.
Rivera was participating in the 'Devils on the Run Tour' hosted by the NESPR, a Connecticut-based paranormal research group founded by Tony Spera, the son-in-law of the late supernatural investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
According to the NESPR, the 'Devils on the Run' tour celebrates the work of Ed and Lorraine Warren and displays Annabelle 'for those brave enough to face her.'
In 1968, the Warrens investigated the case of Annabelle, a red-headed Raggedy Ann doll given to a nursing student, who brought it home, where she lived with a roommate.
'Almost immediately, the roommates noticed strange occurrences with the doll and they were introduced to a medium who told them the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a young girl named Annabelle,' states the NESPR website. 'The two roommates tried to accept the doll's spirit and please it only to have it reciprocate maliciousness and violent intent.'
The Warrens said Annabelle was 'demonically possessed,' according to the NESPR. 'They removed the doll from the house and encased it in a glass box to contain the evil-spirited entity.'
Another famous case handled by the Warrens: A 1971 haunting in Rhode Island that would inspire the film series, 'The Conjuring.' 'Annabelle Rises,' the newest installment, opened in July 2025.
Who is Annabelle?
Annabelle, a wide-eyed clown-like doll, lives in Connecticut in a display case at the Warren Occult Museum, which, according to NBC News, is 'secured by crosses and holy water.'
'The Annabelle doll is probably one of the most infamous dolls on the planet,' NESPR founder Tony Spera told NBC News in May 2025. He added, 'The doll is something to be respected, not revered.'
Back in May, the NESPR clarified baseless rumors that Annabelle had been stolen from her case.
Spera told NBC News of Annabelle doubters:
'In a way, I don't blame people for being skeptical ... If people don't know about the demonic, it's very difficult to believe that these things are happening — but they do happen.'

'TikTok Cult' pastor's home raided by cops in sex trafficking probe

Alleged 'TikTok cult' leader and pastor Robert Shinn has had a property he partly owns raided by officials as part of an investigation into allegations of sex trafficking A home connected to a " TikTok cult" pastor was raided by police as part of a probe into sex trafficking and other criminal activities. ‌ The property partially owned by Pastor Robert Shinn was stormed by federal agents from the FBI, the US Postal Service, Department of Labor and IRS and several people were detained. The pastor was the subject of a 2024 Netflix documentary series called "Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult" but the identities of the people arrested are not clear. Officials reportedly raided the California home over allegations of sex trafficking, tax evasion, money laundering, mail fraud, and COVID-19 -related fraud. ‌ ‌ The raided home was the same property featured on the Netflix show and the warrant is connected with the alleged cult in the docuseries, according to the Los Angeles Times. Helicopter footage from local station KTLA showed at least six people handcuffed, including an older woman and a woman holding a child. Officials entered the home at 6am on Friday morning as a neighbour, in the Tujunga area, said he heard loud bangs, according to the LA Times. The local said: "I was getting ready for work when I heard the flash-bangs go off. Then a loud speaker ... 'You need to come out, hands up.' All the neighbors came out to find FBI, Sheriff's Department and police taking up the whole area." ‌ Shinn founded the Shekinah Church in 1994 and helped to create an LA-based talent management agency called 7M Films. This company has been accused of allegedly luring in dancers by telling them they will become famous on TikTok. Some of these dancers allegedly also worked for the church and recruited for the talent management company. Four people who worked for 7M and were part of the Shekinah Church claimed Shinn manipulated and abused them. Some of these people also accused the pastor of sexual assault. ‌ Shinn reportedly would call himself "the Man of God" and told followers in the alleged cult that his teachings would grant them salvation. The Netflix docuseries follows former members of the Shekinah Church and how they escaped the alleged cult and rebuilt their lives afterwards. A former member, Dancer Aubrey Fisher, claimed Shinn forced her to give the church 70% of her income - which allegedly included a 10% "man of God fee" for Shinn himself. Another ex-member, Melanie Wilking, went viral in 2022 when she said she was trying to reach her sister Miranda and said she was "no longer in control" of her life. The sisters had a TikTok page that was made when they joined the 7M management company. Shinn has denied claims the Shekinah Church and 7M are affiliated with one another. The alleged cult leader did not personally respond to the Netflix series but 7M released an Instagram post, at the time, which claimed the show referring to the group as a cult were "false statements", according to the LA Times.

Scotland's gang war 'halted as Mr Big running out of footsoldiers and lying low'

Ross McGill, who has been waging war on associates of Edinburgh kingpin Mark Richardson and the notorious Glasgow-based Daniel clan, is believed to be 'lying low'. A gang war which has resulted in a number of shootings and firebombings across the central belt has shuddered to a halt after the crime lord behind the attacks began to 'run out of footsoldiers', according to underworld sources. Ross McGill, who has been waging war on associates of Edinburgh kingpin Mark Richardson and the notorious Glasgow-based Daniel clan, is believed to be 'lying low'. A number of businesses, properties and cars linked to Richardson and the Daniel family have been torched during an barrage of terrifying attacks spreading across the east and west of the country since March. Those associated with Richardson have repeatedly been targeted, with vehicles torched and several homes allegedly shot at by masked gunmen. A group called Tamo Junto (TMJ) have continued to taunt their rivals by releasing videos of the attacks and threatening further violence as Dubai-based McGill seeks revenge for an underworld heist. It is claimed an associate of Richardson paid for a stash of drugs with fake notes after building a relationship with the crime lord. McGill, in retaliation, supposedly used his criminal contacts to wage war on those involved in the deal. Due to police cracking down on those involved in the gangland feud, however, it has been suggested McGill is now "lying low" after officers investigating the series of violent incidents made a total of 55 arrests. A source told Edinburgh Live McGill has been left with fewer footsoldiers to do his bidding as several weeks have passed since the last gang-related incident in the capital. They told our sister title: "Word is McGill is lying low and has taken a backseat. The Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan shootings in Spain was mental as well so things have calmed down a little after that. "From the beginning there have been more and more characters getting involved and competing to see who was the bravest basically. It has all just become so messy." It was reported earlier this month McGill was confronted by another gangster at a gym in Dubai over the heat he has brought. Stephen 'Jimmy' Jamieson is understood to have confronted McGill during the bust-up. The most recent arrest linked to the gang war, named Operation Portaledge by police, came on Friday, July 18, when a man was arrested and charged in connection with wilful fireraising and firearms offences. Jordan Steele, 38, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, July 21, in connection with the alleged firebombing of the Belle Cheveux salon in Leith on March 6. Steele made no plea and was granted bail. A 26-year-old male was also arrested in connection with alleged damage at a property on Walter Scott Avenue in Edinburgh on Thursday, 12 June, and an alleged wilful fire-raising at a property on Jackson Way in Tranent on Friday, 13 June. In addition, another 26-year-old man was also charged in connection with two alleged vehicle fires in Port Seton on Sunday, May 18 - he will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
