Auburn basketball's first round opponent revealed ahead of 2025 NCAA Tournament Auburn basketball earns its first No. 1 seed since 1999. Here is what to know about the Tigers' first round matchup.
The dust has settled from the NCAA Tournament selection show, and the Auburn Tigers are ready to begin their quest for its first national championship.
Auburn grabbed the No. 1 overall seed in the South region, and will open up the NCAA Tournament on Thursday against the No. 16 seed Alabama State/St. Francis in Lexington, Kentucky. The Hornets and Red Flash will square off on Tuesday at 5:40 p.m. CT in Dayton, Ohio, with the winner's reward being a date with the top-seeded Auburn Tigers.
Alabama State stunned Jackson State in the SWAC Tournament on Saturday, 60-56, to earn the conference's automatic bid. The Hornets were paced by CJ Hines' 20 point effort in the win. Alabama State enters the NCAA Tournament with a 19-15 record, finishing No. 4 in the SWAC. Alabama State does bring plenty of momentum with them into the tournament by winning six-straight games to close the season.
St. Francis defeated Central Connecticut State in the NEC Championship Game, earning its first NCAA Tournament bid since 1991. The Red Flash squeaked out the 66-63 win in a game where neither team trailed by more than four points throughout. Riley Parker and Juan Cranford each connected on two three-point attempts in the win, with Cranford leading the team with 14 points. Like Alabama State, St. Francis has won six games in a row entering NCAA Tournament play, so their 16-17 record is not to be taken lightly.
Auburn wrapped up the No. 1 seed by boasting an impressive resume. Auburn ended conference tournament week ranked No. 2 in the NET with an impressive 16-5 record over "quad-1" teams, two more than the No. 2 team, Houston. Auburn also won 22 games over teams in both quad-1 and quad-2, which is a better record that Florida, Houston, Alabama, and Michigan State built. The team has received criticism, however, due to its recent slump. After building a 27-2 record, the Tigers dropped four of its final five games ahead of March Madness and will enter the tournament at 28-5.
The winner of Auburn's first round game with Alabama State or St. Francis will face No. 8 Louisville vs. No. 9 Creighton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

HBCU Adds Big Ten Champs to Already Loaded Schedule

Coppin State women's basketball isn't ducking anyone. Fresh off announcing marquee matchups against South Carolina and Tennessee, the HBCU just added another giant to their 2025-26 gauntlet: Big Ten champion Ohio State. Head coach Darrell Mosley revealed that Coppin will face the Buckeyes on November 9 at Value City Arena in Columbus. The Eagles also tacked on a road game at SMU on December 10, rounding out a schedule that's quickly becoming one of the most ambitious in all of HBCU hoops. Coppin's four Power Conference opponents read like a who's who of women's college basketball royalty. The Eagles will open with Big Ten champion Ohio State on November 9 in Columbus, then travel to Knoxville on November 23 to face eight-time national champion Tennessee. On January 18, Coppin will welcome the 2024 national champion South Carolina Gamecocks to Baltimore, before closing the stretch with a December 10 trip to Dallas to battle AAC contender SMU. The matchup with Ohio State will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Buckeyes finished 26-7 last season, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and brought back Jaloni Cambridge, a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team pick and Co-Freshman of the Year. Guard Chance Gray returns after starting all 33 games and scoring over 1,000 career points, while Boston College transfer T'yana Todd adds one of the nation's top three-point strokes. In short, Coppin is stepping directly into the fire. For Coppin State, this isn't unfamiliar territory. Just two years ago, the Eagles hosted Angel Reese and LSU inside PEC Arena, giving Baltimore fans a courtside look at the eventual national champions and one of the most recognizable names in women's basketball. That willingness to challenge the sport's elite has become a calling card for the program. And now, under a new head coach, the Eagles are doubling down on that identity. The Mosley era at Coppin State is officially underway after a major coaching change this offseason. Longtime coach Jermaine Woods stepped away, and in stepped Darrell Mosley, a Baltimore native who spent the last three seasons at Arizona State-two as the Sun Devils' associate head coach. Mosley previously turned Lincoln (Pa.) into a perennial contender in the CIAA and brings 15 years of experience at the college level. Athletic Director Derek Carter called him "a leader ready to take Coppin to new heights," while Mosley himself vowed to build "a culture of excellence both on and off the court." Scheduling Ohio State, Tennessee, and South Carolina in Year One? That's a statement. For HBCU women's basketball, these types of games are more than just paydays-they're platforms. Coppin State players will test themselves against some of the best talent in the country, from WNBA prospects at Tennessee to one of the deepest Big Ten lineups at Ohio State. Win or lose, it's visibility that strengthens recruiting, energizes alumni, and shows that HBCU programs aren't afraid to swing big. And with Mosley at the helm, Coppin State is swinging harder than ever. The post HBCU Adds Big Ten Champs to Already Loaded Schedule appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Copyright HBCU Gameday 2012-2025

Matt LaFleur squashes rumor that Packers will move on from WR Romeo Doubs

With NFL cutdowns required to be completed by 3:00 pm CT on Tuesday, August 26, rumors are circulating about who may or may not be available, both by release and/or via dating back to the beginning of the offseason, one name that has drawn attention in discussions about the Green Bay Packers' roster is wide receiver Romeo Doubs. Head coach Matt LaFleur squashed those potential rumors during a sitdown with Kay Adams on her show "Up & Adams" on Thursday."I'd be very shocked if he ever was going anywhere," LaFleur said before saying, "No, that will not happen."When asked why he was so confident, LaFleur stated, "Because Rome is out there competing and doing everything that we need to see from him. Obviously, he's played a lot of ball for us and at a high level. He's been a great teammate, and he goes out there and you can count on him every day." Except LaFleur doesn't have final say over Green Bay's roster. Brian Gutekunst does. But to think the team's general manager would trade a veteran receiver the head coach loves is speculation around Doubs stems back to last season when he was suspended one game for skipping multiple practices. There has been no spillover to 2025 as Doubs has had yet another impressive training camp."I just love where he's at mentally right now," Jordan Love said. "He's playing pretty lights out right now and making a lot of good plays when the ball's in the air, which is one of those things that's expected from Rome, and he's done that so many times. But the headspace he's at, attacking every day trying to find ways to get better, even when we're not on the same page sometimes, and a play might be incomplete, we're talking after and trying to figure out how we might do things differently, so I love where he's at right now."In addition to being one of Love's most trusted weapons, depth at wide receiver is one of the best aspects of the Packers' roster. This is another reason why cutting or trading Doubs makes little Minnesota Vikings are reportedly in the market for a veteran receiver, and other teams may be as well. Any inquiries about Doubs would probably be a waste of entering Year 4 and the final year of his rookie contract, Doubs has had a solid career for a fourth-round draft pick. He's battled some injuries, including multiple concussions last season, so staying healthy will be key as he enters the most crucial season of his career.

Auburn lays claim to Iowa football national championship

Just over a week until the 2025 season, the Iowa football program will apparently need to adjust its record books as the Auburn Tigers made news on Tuesday that it will be recognizing five new claimed national championships, including the Hawkeyes' 1958 national title. Auburn announced on Tuesday that it is now claiming four additional national championships, including the years 1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004. The surprising decision by Auburn is certainly up for debate, as all five occurred when the sport determined its overall winner based on multiple media polls. Iowa has long laid claim to the 1958 national championship. The Hawkeyes were recognized as national champions by the Football Writers Association of America after leading the nation in total offense. The Hawkeyes' 8-1-1 (5-1 Big Ten) campaign ended with a 38-12 Rose Bowl victory over Cal and garnered the No. 2 spot in the final Associated Press poll. Consensus All-American Randy Duncan was named the Helms Foundation Player of the Year and received the Walter Camp Trophy for the Hawkeyes in 1958. Due to LSU finishing in the top spot in the final AP poll, they would also claim a national title that season. Auburn stipulates it is deserving of a share based on that season's David Montgomery Full Season Championship poll, which named the Tigers' 9–0–1 (6–0–1 SEC) record as their national champion.
