Malaysians set on fire in Bangkok being assisted, says Wisma Putra
The Foreign Ministry's Communications and Public Diplomacy Division said both victims are receiving treatment in separate hospitals.
Consular officers are monitoring their condition and helping to arrange travel for immediate family members to the Thai capital.
'The Embassy is ensuring that the victims and their families receive the necessary support and assistance,' the statement said.
Thai authorities are conducting a full investigation into the incident.
Malaysia has expressed confidence it will be carried out thoroughly and transparently.
The ministry pledged full cooperation as required and also urged the public not to speculate and to allow the investigation to take its course.
'We remain committed to safeguarding Malaysians abroad and will continue to provide assistance through its missions and the Consular Division,' it said.
On Thursday (Aug 7), two Malaysian tourists were critically injured after being set on fire by an unemployed man on Ratchadamri Road.
The incident occurred at about 10pm when thinner was poured on the victims from behind as they sat on steps near a shopping centre.
The victims were identified as Ong, 26, and Gan, 27.

BANGKOK: The Malaysian Embassy in Thailand has assured the families of two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire that it will closely monitor their conditions. The victims, Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and Ong Yik Leong, 26, remain in stable condition despite being in the intensive care unit, said the embassy's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui. Gan sustained second-degree burns to 36 per cent of her body, including her face, chest, and arm, while Ong suffered similar burns to his upper body, both front and back. Bong said the embassy would continue to monitor the victims' progress closely with the hospital, even if their family members return to Malaysia. Gan and Ong were attacked by an unemployed man who allegedly doused them with thinner before setting them alight near a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road about 10pm on Thursday. During a briefing with the victims' family members, Assistant Permanent Secretary of the Tourism and Sports Ministry Seksun Ngawsuwan said the Thai government would provide a specific sum to help with medical expenses. "We will assist the family members as much as possible to ensure that the recovery process proceeds smoothly," he said. Seksun said both victims are expected to require about one month of treatment in Thailand to ensure their wounds heal properly. He added that a transfer back to Malaysia would depend on the doctors' observations and recommendations. "I know it is a challenge for the family members to stay here and care for their loved ones. However, until they are medically fit, it is too risky to transfer them back to Malaysia," he said. Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong said his ministry was concerned over the incident and had instructed agencies to urgently provide assistance and supervision, and to strengthen security measures to build confidence among all tourists visiting Thailand.

Thai tourism minister vows tighter security after attack on Malaysians
KOTA BARU: Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong has expressed profound regret and concern over the assault of two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire in Bangkok yesterday. According to Thai news portal The Nation, the minister said he had directed agencies under his ministry — especially the Tourist Police and relevant security units — to provide urgent assistance and close protection for the victims. He also ordered tighter security measures in major tourist areas to restore confidence among international travellers. In addition, he announced that the ministry is providing support through compensation applications under the aid scheme for injured or deceased foreign visitors, and tasked the Tourist Assistance Centre (TAC) with closely monitoring the victims' medical treatment. "I have also instructed TAC to assist with documentation, foreign-language communication, and coordination with relevant agencies such as the Malaysian Embassy, hospitals, local police, and other bodies," he added. Sorawong said ministry officials plan to visit the injured tourists to offer support once doctors deem it safe. He reiterated that the Thai government is committed to prioritising the safety and welfare of all visitors. "I extend my heartfelt wishes to the injured and their families, and I assure everyone that Thai authorities will do everything possible to protect and care for tourists, ensuring Thailand remains a safe and attractive destination," he said. The incident occurred when a 30-year-old former boxer, reportedly in a state of distress, allegedly doused the two Malaysian tourists with thinner and set them ablaze outside a prominent shopping mall in Bangkok's Ratchaprasong area. The suspect confessed to carrying out the attack, stating that he had no prior conflict with the victims but acted out of stress caused by unemployment and lack of income.

Thousands brave rain to attend solidarity rally for Zara Qairina
PAPAR: Despite the rain, about 5,000 people turned up for the Himpunan Aman Solidariti Zara Qairina here tonight. The rally, held at the Benoni Commercial Centre compound, saw participants holding placards bearing the hashtag #Justice4Zara, and dressed in black as a symbol of mourning. Organising chairman from Komuniti Anak Muda Papar, Azrul Ibrahim, described the gathering as a clear sign that Malaysians are demanding justice in the case involving the Form One student who allegedly fell from the third floor of a religious school dormitory here. "This (peaceful assembly) is not just a show of solidarity, but a manifestation of the public's desire — especially those of us in Papar — to know what truly happened to Zara Qairina. "We are calling for the investigation to be expedited, and if there was any misconduct by anyone, we demand that they be brought to justice. "At the same time, we also urge the people of Papar and beyond to exercise caution when sharing or commenting on any information. "We have seen, through the death of Zara Qairina, that social media has become flooded with false narratives and slander, and if not controlled, this can cause division among the people," he said. Azrul said the case had drawn not only national attention, but also interest from neighbouring countries including Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei. Earlier today, Zara's remains were exhumed from the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Mesapol. A post-mortem is scheduled to be conducted at 9am tomorrow.
