Eerie abandoned city of pristine hotels frozen in time for 30 years

Luke Bradburn, 28, discovered the forgotten tourist hotspot of Kinugawa Onsen, once a bustling resort town famed for its natural hot springs, during a 2024 trip to Japan
An urban explorer has stumbled upon a haunting, deserted city of hotels in Japan - abandoned and untouched for over three decades.

Luke Bradburn, 28, unearthed the forgotten holiday destination of Kinugawa Onsen, formerly a thriving resort town renowned for its natural hot springs. Bradburn journeyed to Japan in early 2024 to chronicle the Fukushima exclusion zone.

Whilst searching for other nearby sites, he chanced upon the derelict hotel quarter. What was previously a flourishing main street has become a ghost town featuring dozens of enormous hotel structures gradually crumbling alongside a clifftop river.

Several remain frozen in time, packed with arcade games, stuffed animals and even beverages still resting on tables.
Luke dedicated six hours traversing wild vegetation, crumbling staircases and perilous precipices, investigating several of the approximately 20 vast structures.

Luke, from Bury, Greater Manchester said: "It was like walking into a ghost town. There were abandoned cars on the streets and while you could drive through the area, every building around you was just left to rot. When we stepped inside, the contrast was mad.
"From the outside, it's all overgrown and decaying, but inside some of the rooms were pristine – like no one had touched them in decades."

Kinugawa Onsen started declining during Japan's financial crisis in the early 1990s, as visitor numbers dropped and numerous hotels closed their doors permanently. Japan's stringent property laws have left many buildings untouched, as some owners passed away heirless or disappeared, resulting in a legal stalemate that prevents demolition.
Luke said: "It's very different in Japan. The crime rate is so low that abandoned buildings don't get looted or destroyed as quickly. In some cases, they need the owner's permission to demolish and if the owner died, they legally can't for 30 years."
He believes there are about 20 deserted hotels along Kinugawa Onsen's riverbanks. Luke managed to visit five or six of these by navigating the interconnected passageways.

He remarked: "Each one felt like stepping into a time capsule. You get a sense of what life must've been like here at its peak and then it just stopped. It's eerie, sad and fascinating all at once."
Within these hotels, Luke discovered magnificent foyers, authentic Japanese onsen baths, and rooms that appeared to be suspended in time. He observed: "One of the strangest things was walking into a lobby and seeing a massive taxidermy deer and falcon still standing there. It was bizarre. I'd seen pictures of it online before and then suddenly we were face to face with it."

Some chambers were preserved so immaculately, it seemed as though the occupants had only just departed.
Luke noted: "We found arcade machines still filled with toys, tables set with drinks and rooms that looked like they hadn't been touched in decades. It was surreal.
"There were floors missing, staircases hanging down, parts where you had to backtrack because everything had collapsed. It was really unsafe in some areas , you had to be so careful."

World's most powerful passports in 2025 revealed as the UK drops in rankings

Link is copied Comments The world's most powerful passports in 2025 have been revealed, and it doesn't look too great for the UK. Or the US for that matter. The results have been decided by the Henley Passport Index, the global official ranking of all the world's passports. It's based on the number of international destinations holders can access without a visa (Picture: Getty Images) The UK passport currently sits in sixth place, after falling to number five at the beginning of this year. In 2024, it was at a much stronger fourth position: passport owners had visa-free access to 191 destinations. Now, it's been reduced to 186. From 2013 to 2015, the British passport took the number one spot (Picture: Getty Images) The US, meanwhile, currently ranks in 10th place, having been bumped down from ninth last year. Currently, it sits alongside Iceland and Lithuania. These nationals have a lower 182 visa-free destinations accessible to them. Back in 2014, US passports came in first place, so in recent years, there's been a significant drop in their power (Picture: Getty Images) Singapore has the most powerful passport for the second year in a row. The Asian nation has access to 193 destinations and offers seamless travel for its holders. Japanese and South Korean passports rank in joint second place, with 190 visa-free destinations, while Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain are all in joint third. They can easily visit 189 countries (Picture: Getty Images) It's all well and good sharing the world's most powerful passports, but where does the authority come from? The Henley Passport Index was launched in 2005 by the investment firm Henley Global. Originally, it was known as the Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index. In 2018, it was shortened to what we know today. It ranks 199 of the world's passports, and publishes quarterly findings (Picture: Getty Images) The index uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which assesses travel restriction information. The research is only based on 'normal' passports, and excludes diplomatic or emergency documents. Temporary airspace restrictions are also ignored (Picture: Getty Images) Following the most recent ratings, Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO at Henley & Partners, explained that passports are no longer just a travel document — they're a 'reflection of your country's diplomatic influence and international relationships.' He stated in the index findings that 'as the US and UK adopt increasingly inward-looking policies, we're witnessing a marked rise in interest from their citizens seeking greater global access and security.' He also said that, in an era of 'growing inequality and mounting geopolitical uncertainty, strategic mobility and citizenship planning are more critical than ever' (Picture: Getty Images) On the next slide, you'll find the top 10 most powerful passports, along with their number of visa-free destinations, from the most recent index. It actually includes 36 countries, due to many being tied in their power (Picture: Getty Images) 1. Singapore – 193 visa-free destinations 2. Japan, South Korea – 190 visa-free destinations 3. Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain – 189 visa-free destinations 4. Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden – 188 visa-free destinations 5. Greece, New Zealand, Switzerland – 187 visa-free destinations 6. United Kingdom – 186 visa-free destinations 7. Australia, Czechia, Hungary, Malta, Poland – 185 visa-free destinations 8. Canada, Estonia, UAE – 184 visa-free destinations 9. Croatia, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia – 183 visa-free destinations 10. Iceland, Lithuania, United States – 182 visa-free destinations (Picture: Getty Images)

Michelin Guide Singapore 2025: Two Japanese restaurants win big this year

The Guide has spoken: 288 restaurants in Singapore are worthy of a spot on the coveted list this year, with one restaurant added to the one-star line-up, and another promoted to two-star status. Ahead of this evening's Michelin Guide 2025 awards ceremony in Marina Bay Sands, the Guide first released its Bib Gourmand 2025 picks last week, with 11 new eateries joining the ranks. 2025 marks the ninth year since the Michelin Guide landed in Singapore. And while it's no secret that the F&B industry suffered plenty of closures recently (this year has 32 one-star restaurants compared to 42 last year, mostly due to closures), tonight's ceremony proves once again that our tiny city is still chock-full of culinary giants. Receiving both the Young Chef Award and his first star is Kazuki Arimoto of Omakase @ Stevens, the fine-dining restaurant at Novotel Singapore on Stevens which specialises in omakase with French culinary inflexions. Then there's chef-owner Yoshio Sakuta of Sushi Sakuta, who walks down the carpet teary-eyed to receive his shiny new two-Michelin-star plaque – a bump from his one-star award last year. The intimate 10-seater restaurant offers a seasonal omakase menu exclusively serving Japanese fish, and demonstrates precision in using two varieties of Japanese rice and five types of sushi vinegar. New entries aside, most of the list remains the same, with the Michelin three-star category dominated by three familiar names in the fine-dining scene. You guessed it – once again, French restaurants Les Amis and Odette, as well as contemporary European restaurant Zén remain snug in the watertight three-star zone. This is Odette's seventh consecutive year receiving three stars and Les Amis' sixth. Meanwhile, Singapore's two Michelin Green Star awardees retain their titles – contemporary Southeast Asian Fiz and Seroja continue to go above and beyond in their efforts to source for sustainable ingredients, conserve energy and reduce food waste. They also deliver big on flavour and are consistent picks on our Time Out Singapore 50 best restaurants list. All in all, Singapore now has a whopping 288 establishments on the Michelin Guide, including three three-stars, seven two-stars, thirty-two one-star, 89 Bib Gourmand, two Green stars and 157 Michelin Selected venues. A new Pokémon theme park is coming to Tokyo in 2026

Gotta catch 'em all – a new Pokémon theme park is coming to Japan in early 2026. Slated to open in a corner of Yomiuri Land amusement park, the upcoming PokéPark KANTO will be the first permanent outdoor facility dedicated to the iconic Japanese media franchise. PokéPark KANTO is slated for early 2026 and will stretch 26,000 square meters in Tokyo's Tama Hills. Park-goers will get to meet over 600 Pokémon in two main zones: Pokémon Forest and Sedge Town. The first is a spacious wilderness spanning almost 500 metres in length. It will feature various terrain – think hilly paths, tall grass, tunnels, and rocky trails where Pokémon from Kanto and other regions will roam. In other words, a great opportunity for you to train your Pokémon spotting skills! Sedge Town is envisioned as a space where Pokémon and Trainers can meet and socialise. Shop for merchandise in the Pokémon Trainers Market, or visit Pokémon Centre, Poké Mart, and Sedge Town. There will also be Pokémon parades for the whole family to enjoy, and two other unannounced attractions. Advance ticket sales are expected to begin in late 2025, so stay tuned for more information regarding ticket prices and how to book.
