Devastated family speaks out after 12-year-old girl is killed by a runaway car outside her school
The family of a 12-year-old girl killed by a runaway vehicle outside her middle school are voicing their frustration with her school district.
On Thursday, Arsema Mekonnen, 12, was walking outside Washington Middle School in Seattle's central district with her classmates during their lunch period when a vehicle that had been left in a no-parking zone rolled backwards 75 feet down a hill and hit her, according to Seattle police. She died as a result of the accident.
Arsema's family told Seattle news station KIRO 7 that they felt abandoned by the Seattle Public School district following their daughter's death.
'Who killed my kid?' Berihun Mekonnen, Arsema's father, asked. 'Why you don't tell me? Why?'
The vehicle was left in the no-parking zone by a 51-year-old woman who has not been publicly identified. Police said the vehicle was not fully parked when it began to roll. Local police are still determining whether the driver will face charges in the girl's death.
Tigist Yitna, Arsema's mother, said she and her family moved to the United States from Ethiopia to provide a better life for their daughter, but now feel abandoned as they search for answers.
'I brought my daughter here from Ethiopia to have a better life, to go to a better school, get better education. And then I send my child to school and I don't get my child back,' she told KIRO 7 through a translator.
The family said they have not been permitted to see their daughter since the day she was killed.
Wintan Halie, a friend of the Mekonnens' who translated for them during their interview with KIRO 7, said that no one from the school reached out to them after Arsema's death and accused the officials of leaving the family to 'fend for themselves.'
After the incident, Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Brent Jones released the following statement:
"My heart is heavy with sorrow as we face the devastating loss of a Washington Middle School student. I am deeply saddened by this tragedy, and my thoughts and condolences are with the student's family, friends and the entire Washington community during this incredibly difficult time.'
On Tuesday, Seattle Public Schools chief of staff Bev Redmond contacted KIRO 7, assuring reporters that the district planned to meet with the family "as early as possible this week," and insisted that it was "committed to supporting this family."
Arsema's funeral is planned for Sunday, March 16. A GoFundMe has been established for the family by parents of other students attending the middle school.
"To support [Arsema's] grieving family during this difficult time, parents are collecting donations big and small to support them through this horrible loss and cover funeral expenses," a message on the GoFundMe states.
The fundraiser has already collected $43,000 of its $45,000 goal.

"We are asking if anyone can help how big or small to donate towards getting John home back in the Uk and towards funeral costs. We appreciate everyone's love, support and respect for all the family at this very difficult time." Sean, from Cheshire, claims resort staff struggled to locate a defibrillator - and when they finally did, none of them knew how to use it on Sunday May 25. A family member used the device in the end before paramedics arrived, added Sean. When relatives arrived at hospital, personnel demanded John's passport details which the family didn't have to hand because the documents were securely stored in a safe in the hotel room. As they tried to locate the passports, Sean told MailOnline how his mother, Julie, was the only one allowed in to the hospital with his father. Sean and Vicky decided to go ahead with the wedding. Sean said his dad had been particularly excited for an ice cold beer following the ceremony, and so in his honour they placed a family snap of the retired builder next to a cooler of beer and drank in his honour at the party.

WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT Makayla Fortner, 15, was mauled to death by the pack of around 40 dogs, including pit bulls, as she tried to feed the neglected animals A teenage girl was tragically killed while attempting to feed about 30 to 40 neglected rescue dogs. The dogs were being held at an enclosed on a property in Alexander, Arkansas when the Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the scene of the horrific attack at around 12:15pm on Wednesday. Upon arrival officers found 15 year old Makayla Fortner lifeless. Ralph Murphy, a neighbour, witnessed the first officer on the scene firing his pistol several times to drive the dogs back from the fence. "I watched a Saline County deputy come out and go up to the fence, and a bunch of dogs ran up to the fence," Murphy remarked. "He pulled out his pistol and shot into the ground twice, and the dogs ran. Then he walked over and looked down and turned around and walked back. Then I moved and saw a body on the ground," he shared. Benton Animal Services spokesperson Matt Thibault conveyed that the dogs in question included pit bulls, their crossbreeds, and hounds. Following the tragedy, officials told the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that 14 of the dogs were put down, whilst four other dogs which were inside the house at the time of the incident were spared. Local residents had voiced their increasing apprehension due to the issue with the roaming pack of dogs, regularly lodging complaints to officials in Saline County about the dogs being let loose in the neighbourhood, reports the Mirror US. Despite their grievances, county officials have consistently told exasperated locals that their hands are tied when it comes to tackling the issue. One resident labelled the dogs as so "vicious" that "no one felt safe allowing their children to walk to and from the bus stop. "When they moved in, all the neighbours were very upset. They moved in with a huge amount of dogs and a large amount of broken vehicles," Heidi Clay remarked. She continued: "This was a beautiful young girl who lost her life because these people did not properly take care of their dogs and have a hoarding issue." In the days leading up to the tragic incident, Wilkie posted on Facebook about her and her daughter's efforts to look after over 40 puppies at an elderly couple's home. On June 8 she shared: "As usual, I found myself in a hoarding situation involving an older couple in their 80s who had too many dogs," highlighting that there were "puppies everywhere, more than 40, with a new litter born today." A friend of the victim's mum, Stephanie Wilkie, set up a GoFundMe page to aid the family and contribute towards funeral costs. "On behalf of my dear friend Stephanie Wilkie, I am heartbroken to share the devastating news that her beloved 15-year-old daughter, Makayla Fortner, tragically passed away following a horrific dog attack," organiser Erin Bowman wrote on the page.

But tragedy struck the day before the wedding when the retired builder, 60, failed to resurface during a game in the water with the youngsters. Guests rushed to help and performed CPR at the poolside at around 2.30pm on May 25. Sean, 30, claims resort staff struggled to locate a defibrillator - and when they finally did, none of them knew how to use it. He told MailOnline: 'We ended up finding it ourselves in a cupboard near reception, and a family member used it.' An ambulance arrived about 15 minutes later and took John to Paphos General Hospital - but the family say they weren't allowed to travel with him. In the days since his death, Sean and his family have launched a GoFundMe page to raise money to bring John's body home - saying they've been 'let down' by local authorities. John was taken to Paphos General Hospital, 15 minutes away from the beach side resort and the worried family followed along in a car. But Sean said when they arrived but was chaos and hotel staff demanded John's passport details which the family didn't have to hand because the documents were securely stored in a safe in the hotel room. As they tried to locate the passports, Sean told MailOnline how his mother, Julie, was the only one allowed in to the hospital with his father. Meanwhile the rest of the Fazackerley family were forced to sit outside on plastic chairs as they waited for news of their father. Sean said: 'We followed in a taxi and we had to register him with his passport details but it took time because my mum was in the hospital - she wasn't in the hotel and my dad had set the safe pin so we couldn't access it but the hospital wouldn't move forward until they had the passport details.' He added: 'We had to sit outside on chairs in the reception.' Sean went on to describe how the earth-shattering news of his father's death was delivered to the worried family and slammed the hospital for dealing with them so offhandedly. The IT manager said: 'We were called over and they said they couldn't save him but the door wasn't shut and it was in public so people could walk past and hear. Guests rushed to help John, performing CPR at the poolside before he was taken to the hospital where the family were told he had tragically died (John pictured with his wife Julie) 'We got five minutes with him and they just didn't treat us with any empathy.' Sean is now raising funds to bring his father home and confessed he is unsure when his father will be brought back in to the UK because of confusion over the postmortem from Cyprus. He said he feel forgotten and frustrated but has vowed to keep pursuing the Cypriot government and police. 'We feel forgotten, the way we have been treated, they only wanted to know about the funeral,' he explained. Despite the shock of his father's death, Sean decided to go ahead with the wedding to his fiancée and made sure to include a special tribute to John. He confessed that his father had been particularly excited for an ice cold beer following the ceremony and so in his honour they placed a family snap of John next to a cooler of beer and drank in his honour at the party. He said: 'We haven't had a funeral yet but we paid tribute to him in the wedding The one thing he said he was excited for was the bar and so we set up a picture of him next to an ice bucket full of beers so he was there with us'. Sean added that life without his father has been difficult, especially for his mother who has moved in with him and his new bride Vicky. 'Now we're just trying to support my mum and she's moved in with us for a bit,' Sean explained. He added that the doting grandfather is missed by the entire family and especially the grandchildren. Newly-married Sean said: 'He was a very family-orientated man and his final moments were with his grandkids, playing. 'He loved fishing and spending time with the grandkids and we miss him.'
