Hong Kong aiming to produce world snooker champion with help of Judd Trump, Neil Robertson
Zhao Xintong finally broke mainland China's World Championship duck this year, but Marco Fu Ka-chun's 2006 and 2016 semi-final runs have been the best of it for Hong Kong.
Fu's compatriot Ng On-yee won the most recent of her three women's world titles in 2019.
The former world champion pair of Trump and Robertson, who both have Hong Kong residency, co-founded the Hong Kong Billiard Sports Academy, which was officially opened on Wednesday.
'There's been a gap between Marco and On-yee, and the next talent to come through,' Trump said. 'Maybe that's because there aren't enough snooker facilities in Hong Kong that are right for children.

'A lot of clubs are dingy and smoky, so it's nice to open a professional facility to practise.

Will Trump's chip tariffs tilt the balance for China in Southeast Asia?
US plans to impose 100 per cent of tariffs on imported chips are a heavy blow to Southeast Asia's chip industry and could push the region closer to China, according to observers. US President Donald Trump announced the duties on semiconductors and chips on Wednesday, saying that only companies that were 'building in the United States' were exempt. It is unclear just how much of a US manufacturing presence companies would need to have to qualify for tariff exemptions or reductions, or whether the policy will differentiate between the more advanced AI chips and legacy semiconductors. Southeast Asia, led by Singapore and Malaysia, has emerged a key manufacturing hub for legacy semiconductors, integrated circuits that use older technology. Vietnam, which has stepped up investment in semiconductor production and workforce training in recent years, is also emerging as a key player in the global supply chain. With the region already struggling to absorb other tariffs imposed as part of Trump's 'America first' policy, the latest US duties – as well as Washington's policy unpredictability – could open the way for China, analysts said.

Trump demands 'conflicted' Intel CEO to resign
Trump demands 'conflicted' Intel CEO to resign Trump has accused Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan of being "highly conflicted" and said he must resign immediately. File photo: Reuters US President Donald Trump on Thursday demanded the immediate resignation of new Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, calling him "highly conflicted" due to his ties to Chinese firms and raising doubts about plans to turn around the struggling American chip icon. "The CEO of INTEL is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. Intel shares closed down 3 percent on Thursday. Trump's demand came a day after Senator Tom Cotton said he had written to Intel questioning ties between Tan and Chinese firms. The Malaysia-born tech industry veteran took the helm at struggling Intel in March. Trump's intervention marked a rare instance of a US president publicly calling for a CEO's ouster and sparked debate among investors. "It would be setting a very unfortunate precedent. You don't want American presidents dictating who runs companies, but certainly his opinion has merit and weight," said Phil Blancato, CEO of Ladenburg Thalmann Asset Management. David Wagner, head of equity and portfolio manager at Intel shareholder Aptus Capital Advisors, said while "many investors likely believe that President Trump has his hand in too many cookie jars, it's just another signal that he's very serious about trying to bring business back to the US" "Intel, The Board of Directors, and Lip-Bu Tan are deeply committed to advancing US national and economic security interests and are making significant investments aligned with the President's America First agenda," the company said in a statement. "We look forward to our continued engagement with the Administration." (Agencies)

World Cup winner Juan Mata's advice for Hong Kong champions' Australian striking recruit
New Tai Po striker James Temelkovski has arrived in Hong Kong with the recent advice of a World Cup and Champions League winner ringing in his ears. Last summer, Temelkovski secured a dream professional opportunity with the Australian A-League team Western Sydney Wanderers. However, the 27-year-old Australian made only eight substitute appearances in his single campaign. His solitary goal, against Central Coast Mariners, was created by former Chelsea and Manchester United forward Juan Mata. 'Even though he's a world-class footballer, as a human being he's one of a kind,' Temelkovski said. 'He'll put his arm around you and wants to know you and understand how you think. He was an incredible friend and mentor. 'He knew my time at the club was tough, but he told me he believed in me, that I was an unbelievable player, and I couldn't allow my head to go down. He said I had to keep striving to get where I want, because that's what a real footballer does.' Juan Mata with the World Cup trophy after Spain's victory in 2010. Temelkovski was close enough with Mata – part of Spain's 2010 world champion squad and a Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012 – that the pair devised forfeits for their darts matches.
