Vodafone Idea partners with AST SpaceMobile to roll-out satcom services in India

Time of India8 hours ago

NEW DELHI:
Vodafone Idea
(Vi) has partnered with US-headquartered
AST SpaceMobile
to deliver
satellite connectivity
in India. This comes months after its rivals,
Reliance Jio
and
Bharti Airtel
, inked separate deals with billionaire Elon Musk-owned SpaceX to deliver Starlink satellite internet service in the country.
The partnership will combine Vi's pan-India mobile network with AST SpaceMobile's space-based cellular technology, which can beam signals directly to ordinary smartphones without requiring specialised software, hardware, or any updates, the companies said on Wednesday.
Aligned with Digital India's initiatives, AST SpaceMobile and Vi will collaborate on the SpaceMobile Satellite System. This space-based cellular broadband ecosystem will be designed to expand Vi's terrestrial connectivity, providing voice, video, data streaming, and internet access.
The partnership will encompass design, implementation, and launch of this system, wherein AST SpaceMobile will develop, manufacture, and manage the satellite constellation, and Vi will oversee terrestrial network integration, operating spectrum, and market access.
India currently has 1.1 billion mobile subscribers, using both 4G and fifth-generation (5G) networks. While there is widespread 4G and emerging 5G coverage, satellite communication (
satcom
) will complement terrestrial connectivity to further expand broadband cellular access in some challenging terrains where deployment of terrestrial mobile infrastructure might be difficult.
'Vi has always been committed to leveraging technology to connect every Indian and we see satellite communication as a complement to terrestrial connectivity. As satellite-based mobile access becomes a reality in India, we are looking forward to ushering in a new era of seamless and resilient connectivity,' said Avneesh Khosla, Chief Marketing Officer, Vi.
'India, with its vast and dynamic telecom market, is the ideal place to demonstrate how our space-based cellular broadband can seamlessly complement terrestrial networks,' said Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer, AST SpaceMobile.
'Together with Vodafone Idea, we are excited to unlock new possibilities for emergency response, disaster management, agriculture, remote learning, and countless other applications that will benefit from truly ubiquitous mobile broadband,' Ivory added.
Both companies will also collaborate and jointly develop commercial offerings for diverse sectors, including consumer, enterprise, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Jagbir Singh, chief technology officer (CTO), Vi, earlier told ET in an interview, 'We are in conversations with (satcom) partners and will share an update at an appropriate time.'
Singh had said that the telecom carrier does not see satellite communication as competition to terrestrial networks but rather a 'complement by reaching rural and disaster prone areas and expanding connectivity'.

New Mangalore Port Honoured with Greentech Global Environment Award for the 8th Time

Mangaluru: The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has secured the Greentech Global Environment Award 2025 under the Environment Protection category, marking the eighth time it has received this distinction. The award was presented at the 24th edition of the Greentech Environment and Sustainability Summit held in New Delhi on June 12 and 13, recognising institutions that demonstrate leadership in environmental protection and sustainability. The recognition highlights NMPA's sustained efforts in promoting green infrastructure and environment-friendly operations. NMPA Chairman Dr. A.V. Ramana lauded the Civil Engineering Department and the port workforce for their commitment to green goals. 'This award is a testimony to our comprehensive and sustained efforts towards a cleaner, greener future,' he said. NMPA has adopted a series of eco-conscious measures over recent years. Its entire operations are now powered by a 5.3 MW photovoltaic solar plant. Rainwater harvesting has been implemented through three reservoirs, benefiting over 500 village wells and ensuring water self-sufficiency. A green cover expansion saw 7,700 saplings planted in FY 2024–25. A 1.2 million-litre-per-day sewage treatment plant enables reuse of treated water, supporting zero liquid discharge goals. The port has replaced nearly all conventional lighting with energy-efficient LEDs and introduced electric buses, cars, and CNG vehicles to reduce its carbon emissions. With 55 percent of its cargo handling now mechanised, NMPA has reduced energy use and operational emissions. Shore power connectivity has been introduced for berthed vessels, and automated sprinklers are used to manage dust pollution. Other initiatives include a vermi-compost unit, a moisture cannon vehicle for dust suppression, a slop reception facility for safe management of ship waste oils, and the use of mechanised road sweepers. The award reflects NMPA's alignment with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways' vision of transforming Indian ports into hubs of green innovation. As one of India's leading ports on the west coast, NMPA's achievements set a benchmark for environmental stewardship in the maritime sector.

Oracle cloud to add xAI's Grok 3 model to lineup for corporate customers

Oracle said on Tuesday that its cloud computing division is working with Elon Musk's artificial intelligence firm xAI to offer the startup's latest AI model to business customers. Grok 3 , as the model is called, first came out February and aimed to rival the latest offerings from DeepSeek and OpenAI. Musk made the model available to paying subscribers of his X social media platform, as well as through xAI itself. Oracle will now offer Grok 3 from its data centres to corporate users who want to use the model but need their data to remain under their existing security protections with Oracle, Karan Batta, senior vice president at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure , told Reuters on Monday. Oracle also offers models from Meta, French startup Mistral and Cohere on the service, part of its overall strategy of providing versions of popular models in a way that businesses can integrate into corporate software. "Our goal here is to make sure that we can provide a portfolio of models - we don't have our own," Batta said. "That's the current strategy. We are going to be the one that offers all of them."

Bajaj Chetak 3001: 5 practical highlights of the new everyday electric scooter

The Bajaj Chetak 3001 is priced at ₹99,990 (ex-showroom). Bajaj Auto has launched the Chetak 3001, the latest addition to its electric two-wheeler lineup, aimed at refining what made its predecessor, the Chetak 2903, a hit. Built on the same platform as the Chetak 35 Series, this version introduces small but meaningful upgrades to improve day-to-day usability, particularly for Indian urban commuters. The Chetak 3001 is not a radical redesign but a thoughtful update that addresses practical concerns like stability, range, storage and reliability. While the ex-showroom price of ₹ 99,990 keeps it competitive, its appeal will likely rest on how well it performs in real-world riding conditions rather than on headline-grabbing features. For those looking for an EV scooter for daily city use with reliable support infrastructure, the Chetak 3001 offers a solid, if understated, alternative. Below are five key highlights that define the Chetak 3001: Check out Upcoming Bikes In India.
