Charles Leclerc crashes out of Canada first practice as Max Verstappen sets pace
Charles Leclerc crashed out of opening practice for the Canadian Grand Prix as Max Verstappen set the early pace in Montreal.
Verstappen, who is a point away from a one-race ban following his collision with Mercedes' George Russell at the recent Spanish Grand Prix, ended the session just 0.039 seconds clear of Williams driver Alex Albon.
Carlos Sainz finished third in the other Williams with Russell fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth. Lando Norris was only seventh while his McLaren team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri finished down the order in 14th.
Verstappen, who heads into this weekend's race 49 points behind Piastri in the standings, produced the quickest time in the opening action of the weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to lay down an early marker.
But Leclerc's preparations for the 10th round of the campaign were dealt a blow when he suffered a heavy accident with just nine laps on the board.
The Monegasque crashed into the barrier on the entry to turn four and sustained significant damage to the left-hand side of his Ferrari. The force of the impact sent him sideways and across the other side of the chicane.
'F***,' said Leclerc on the radio. 'Sorry, I am in the wall. My bad. I should have gone straight but I thought I would make the corner and I hit the wall.'
Leclerc's Ferrari mechanics will now face a race against time to ensure his car is ready for the concluding practice session of the day which begins at 17:00 local time (22:00 BST).

The session was red-flagged for eight minutes as Leclerc's stricken Ferrari was retrieved and repairs to the barriers were completed.
As Verstappen launched his Red Bull to the top of the order, Norris appeared to be struggling with the handling of his McLaren and finished 0.458 seconds behind the Dutchman.
Piastri, who has won five of the nine rounds so far and leads Norris by 10 points, was even further back, one second off Verstappen's pace.
The British team were experimenting with a new front wing and will be expected to improve in the day's second session.

Robbie Williams has been announced as the Fifa Music Ambassador and has co-written the first official anthem of the global football governing body. The singer, best known for songs such as Rock DJ, Angels and Candy, has been appointed to the role to "deepen fan connection" and "elevate" the emotion of the game by bringing music and football together on the world stage. He has co-written a new song, Desire, which will be played before Fifa tournaments and matches worldwide to accompany players as they walk on to the pitch. The song will debut at the Club World Cup's opening match being held in Miami on Saturday, before being used in all upcoming tournaments including the 2026 World Cup. Williams said: "Music and football bring people together like nothing else - each with their own universal language of connection, emotion, spirit and community. "When those worlds come together, there's nothing like it - and I'm beyond honoured to be the Fifa Music Ambassador. "Football and music have both been part of my life for as long as I can remember, so this means a lot to me on a personal level. The new anthem was co-written with Karl Brazil, Owen Parker and Erik Jan Grob, and features Italian singer Laura Pausini. The track will be accompanied by a new video which will be shown for the first time at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. Williams added: "I've grown up watching the walk-outs, the anthems, the drama - so writing and recording the official Fifa anthem is a real privilege. "I wanted to create something that captures all of it - the passion, the nerves, the pride and the majesty of that feeling just before kick-off. "Football and music have always meant the world to me, and bringing them together on this kind of stage gives me goosebumps. "I know I'll get to perform this song at some of my favourite tournaments in the coming years, which fills me with excitement. It's a real honour that Laura Pausini accepted my invitation to feature on the song – she's an incredible artist with the perfect voice." Pausini, 51, rose to fame after winning the 1993 newcomer artists' section of the Sanremo Music Festival, precursor of the Eurovision and one of the biggest and longest running song contests, with her song, La Solitudine. The singer, who has released Italian and Spanish albums, won a Grammy in 2006 for Best Latin Pop Album and was also nominated for an Oscar in 2020 for best original song with Io si/Seen. She added: "The song is amazing, really touching. It's a dream to be with him for the Fifa Club World Cup. Since I was a little girl growing up in Italy I remember the thrill and passion for football in my home country. "To be able to perform live with Robbie Williams in front of passionate football fans and to be heard by music fans around the world will be truly amazing." It comes as Williams completes the UK leg of his tour which will then continue with concerts in Ireland, Spain and Italy. His new album Britpop is due to be released this autumn.

Conor McGregor disrupts traffic and leaves locals taken aback in Mallorca
Conor McGregor has made a return to Mallorca, one of his favourite holiday spots, and he's already causing quite the commotion. The Crumlin-born ex-UFC champion has been absent from the Octagon for nearly four years, following his last brawl, a Las Vegas trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier in July 2021, which was halted in the first round after McGregor fractured his leg. Whispers have circulated for some time that a comeback might be imminent, but for now, the 36-year-old has flown off for some sunshine with his fiancée Dee Devlin and their children. However, it appears training is still very much on the agenda. McGregor was spotted on social media engaging in some rigorous sprint drills, although the Irishman chose not to exercise publicly during a quieter part of the day. As the former featherweight and lightweight champion began his runs up a hill in the exclusive area of Port Adriano, cars and motorbikes whizzed past, with some even honking their horns at McGregor, who was causing a bit of a traffic disruption on a road leading to the local port, as reported by Spanish news outlet Ultima Hora. This didn't seem to faze the fighter, however. He carried on with his drills as if the vehicles weren't there, and could be heard panting heavily due to the strenuous nature of the training. Locals and holidaymakers were reportedly taken aback when they saw the shirtless Irishman committed to his circuit, and this isn't the first time McGregor has used such a technique to keep fit, reports Dublin Live. In an intense show of stamina, McGregor was filmed back in 2022 tearing up a similar hill on the island under the darkness of night in a social media video, letting out a battle cry as he powered through the steep incline. On his Instagram page, he questioned fans: "Ask yourself this: Why aren't you finding a hill and sprinting it? It's simple, effective, free, benefits are astounding." The former UFC champ has been soaking up the sun after arriving on his favourite holiday spot via private jet, reportedly spending time on his yacht with his fiancée and children, cruising on a €10,000 Porsche electric bike, zipping around in a Ferrari and being generous to the local residents with his tips. McGregor's return to the octagon, however, remains uncertain. There were plans for him to clash with Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in 2024, but an injury thwarted a reappearance. Speculation about the 36-year-old's comeback have been circulating, and McGregor himself indicated an essential condition of his return in April. "I'll only come back to a stadium," he wrote on social platform X, suggesting the Irishman would only re-enter the cage for a massive live audience. Yet, Dana White, the UFC's CEO, was probed last month by Adam Glyn about the likelihood of McGregor fighting again soon, giving an enigmatic answer in the spontaneous interview. "He's not fighting anytime soon," said White, casting uncertainty over whether McGregor will ever return to the UFC. "I haven't talked to him in a minute. But I don't know."
