GPT-4o is back on ChatGPT; OpenAI relents following huge backlash
What happened? The launch of the new GPT model caused much excitement when a livestream was announced on August 6.
On August 6, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman announced a new model to power ChatGPT – GPT-5
The company then deleted access to older models, forcing everyone to use the latest version
However, OpenAI has now relented and is allowing ChatGPT Plus users (those paying $20/month) to use legacy models – although only 4o is available.

Catch me up: it's clear that many users had built deep relationships with the 'personality' behind the responses to GPT-4o, and have been crafting specific prompts and inputs to get their desired outcome.
ChatGPT had multiple models available to handle different complexities of task – models o3 and 4o could be used for things like advanced reasoning and coding
But as GPT-5 is meant to combine all the 'best parts' of the older models, OpenAI deleted access to older models to simplify things and allow all users to use this latest iteration
Users were quick to respond – Reddit filled with angry comments, and one user reportedly 'vomited' at hearing of the loss, as many people felt GPT-5 was too sanitized
Altman took part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything where users expressed sadness that the new model lacked personality – one user commented GPT-5 is 'wearing the skin of my dead friend', in reference to their relationship to GPT-4o
Altman originally said the company was thinking about bringing back access to legacy models (this option was available to a small amount of users after launch) before making it available to all
Why does this matter? OpenAI lost a number of subscribers who were upset at the changes made with GPT-5. While this number is likely to be small, and OpenAI has clearly seen an uplift in users since the launch, appeasing existing subscribers seems to be high on the agenda for the brand. Its decision to launch a Reddit AMA and make changes in direct response to the ire.
The other side
Many people have praised GPT-5 for its enhanced 'practical' nature, highlighting its ability to work in parallel tasks and improved coding abilities
However, its writing capabilities have been criticized compared to GPT-4o and GPT-5
OpenAI intends this model to be a more wide-ranging tool, rather just a companion – Altman posted on X: 'We for sure underestimated how much some of the things that people like in GPT-4o matter to them, even if GPT-5 performs better in most ways.'
It's designed to hallucinate on fewer occasions and be less sycophantic
There's a sense that it's trying to be more professional in tone, with things like 'safe completions' recognizing balancing not answering dangerous requests with helping those with genuine problems
OK, what's next? Altman and co. clearly are fluid when it comes to the changes made to the model – OpenAI is allowing 3000 thinking queries (those that require deeper reasoning and previously far more limited) to Pro users per week.
Altman also is clearly mulling further changes – during the AMA, he asked one user if they would be happy with 4o only, or if the GPT-4.5 model was needed
The CEO also has confirmed the platform is still a little unstable during the rollout – this has been stabilized for Plus users (spending $200/month) but not for those on lower tiers.
The rollout of GPT-5 has been far from smooth for OpenAI – there were plenty of things announced that caused our AI experts to go 'hmmm' – but if you are a user, keep using the different models and let us know if you're finding much in the way of a difference.

Circle stock rises after quarterly revenue beats estimates in first earnings since blockbuster IPO
Circle (CRCL) stock jumped 2% in afternoon trading on Tuesday after the stablecoin issuer posted better-than-expected quarterly revenue for the first time since going public. The company reported second quarter total revenue of $658 million, versus the $647 million analysts expected. CEO Jeremy Allaire said the company's stablecoin, USDC (USDC-USD), was the "fastest-growing major stablecoin over the past year." USDC in circulation grew 90% year-over-year to $61.3 billion at quarter end, and has grown an additional 6.4% to $65.2 billion as of Aug 10. "Overall activity globally in the digital asset economy has been growing," Allaire told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday morning. "We're continuing to see growth in the use of dollar digital currencies like USDC as a store of value around the world in cross-border settlements," he added. "Use cases continue to expand, and I think people are finding that this is an incredibly high utility, new form of money." The company also announced ARC, a new blockchain network for stablecoin finance that will launch in the second half of the year. "We wanted to create a way for institutions to pay fees on blockchains in a fast, predictable manner that would be simple from an accounting perspective and could deliver very low-cost and stable fees," CEO Jeremy Allaire said during the company's earnings call on Tuesday morning. The stock is up roughly 480% from its IPO price of $31 per share as crypto-friendly legislation has lifted the sector. Circle has been at the center of optimism over the stablecoin market following the passage of the GENIUS Act, legislation that creates guardrails and a framework for digital tokens backed by assets such as the US dollar. Circle makes much of its money from interest income, specifically from short-term Treasury bills backing its stablecoin, USDC. The company's reserve income increased 50% year over year to $634 million, primarily from an 86% growth in USDC stablecoin circulation. Allaire indicated if the Fed reserve cuts interest rates and yields on short term treasuries decline, the growth of stablecoins will offset decline in rates. "We believe that lower interest rates are going to be accelerative to the business, as money velocity picks up, as invested capital picks up, and as more people are putting money to use in the economy, this very high utility form of money will grow," said Allaire. The company also shares part of its revenue with Coinbase (COIN), a major distribution partner. Last month, Compass Point analyst Ed Engel flagged the risk of rising distribution costs as the company expands its network while continuing to share a portion of its interest income. On Tuesday morning, Engel said Circle's gross profit margin guidance of 36% to 38% for fiscal year 2025 "slightly underwhelmed." Engel said that forecast implies second half margins will come in below the first half of the year's 39%, writing "we would have expected higher gross margins in 2H25." "While CRCL's lower margin guidance could be due to conservatism, CRCL's recent partnerships don't seem to benefiting the near-term margin outlook. As such, we reiterate our Sell rating and $130 PT," he wrote. However, others on Wall Street saw the stock as a way for investors to participate in rising enthusiasm over stablecoins. "CRCL is a global leader in stablecoins and is the purest stablecoin play in the public markets right now, and we anticipate further gains in the shares as the company creates new opportunities for itself and its partners," Seaport Research analyst Jeff Cantwell wrote last month. The analyst has a Buy rating and price target of $280 on the stock. Circle's results come as the overall market hovers near all-time highs and crypto rallies on expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts and President Trump's push to include crypto in 401(k) plans. Prior to the earnings release, Wall Street analysts had nine Buy, five Hold, and four Sell ratings on Circle stock. Ines Ferre is a senior business reporter for Yahoo Finance. Anthropic's Claude AI model can now handle longer prompts
Anthropic is increasing the amount of information that enterprise customers can send to Claude in a single prompt, part of an effort to attract more developers to the company's popular AI coding models. For Anthropic's API customers, the company's Claude Sonnet 4 AI model now has a one million token context window — meaning the AI can handle requests as long as 750,000 words, more than the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, or 75,000 lines of code. That's roughly five times Claude's previous limit (200,000 tokens), and more than double the 400,000 token context window offered by OpenAI's GPT-5. Long context will also be available for Claude Sonnet 4 through Anthropic's cloud partners, including on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud's Vertex AI. Anthropic has built one of the largest enterprise businesses among AI model developers, largely by selling Claude to AI coding platforms such as Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and Anysphere's Cursor. While Claude has become the model of choice among developers, GPT-5 may threaten Anthropic's dominance with its competitive pricing and strong coding performance. Anysphere CEO Michael Truell even helped OpenAI announce the launch of GPT-5, which is now the default AI model for new users in Cursor. Anthropic's product lead for the Claude platform, Brad Abrams, told TechCrunch in an interview that he expects AI coding platforms to get a 'lot of benefit' from this update. When asked if GPT-5 put a dent in Claude's API usage, Abrams downplayed the concern, saying he's 'really happy with the API business and the way it's been growing.' Whereas OpenAI generates most of its revenue from consumer subscriptions to ChatGPT, Anthropic's business centers around selling AI models to enterprises through an API. That's made AI coding platforms a key customer for Anthropic, and could be why the company is throwing in some new perks to attract users in the face of GPT-5. Last week, Anthropic unveiled an updated version of its largest AI model, Claude Opus 4.1, which pushed the company's AI coding capabilities a bit further. Generally speaking, AI models tend to perform better on all tasks when they have more context, but especially for software engineering problems. For example, if you ask an AI model to spin up a new feature for your app, it's likely to do a better job if it can see the entire project, rather than just a small section. Abrams also told TechCrunch that Claude's large context window also helps it perform better at long agentic coding tasks, in which the AI model is autonomously working on a problem for minutes or hours. With a large context window, Claude can remember all its previous steps in long-horizon tasks. But some companies have taken large context windows to an extreme, claiming their AI models can process massive prompts. Google offers a 2 million token context window for Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Meta offers a 10 million token context window for Llama 4 Scout. Some studies suggest there's a limit to how large context windows can be, and AI models are not great at processing massive prompts. Abrams said that Anthropic's research team focused on increasing not just the context window for Claude, but the 'effective context window,' suggesting that its AI can understand most of the information it's given. However, he declined to reveal Anthropic's exact techniques. When prompts to Claude Sonnet 4 are over 200,000 tokens, Anthropic will charge more to API users, at $6 per million input tokens and $22.50 per million output tokens (up from $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens).
