Despite record, Blue Jays pitchers struggling to keep the ball in the park

Blue Jays manager John Schneider has known it for weeks and, over the past three games in Los Angeles, the World Series champion Dodgers exposed the weakness.

If the Jays are going to make anything meaningful happen down the stretch and beyond, their pitching staff is going to need to find a way to keep the baseball in the ballpark, something the Toronto skipper has publicly acknowledged.

While Sunday's series-salvaging 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers was an emotional highlight, it was going down an all-too-familiar road early on.

Of note, that's the fourth worst in the majors and the only three with higher totals — the Rockies (173), Athletics (170) and Orioles (170) are entrenched as last-place teams in their respective divisions.
And yes, that's a concern, bordering on panic (with the fan base, anyway) if the Jays don't get it fixed in time for the important games that await.

Dodgers hitters were just the latest to take advantage of starters (Chris Bassitt also allowed a pair of homers on Saturday and was chased after 4.2 innings of work). Again, not a crisis as the team and the pitching staff navigate the natural highs and lows of a season, but it will be a point of emphasis for Schneider and his staff to get in check.

Bassitt and Jose Berrios lead the team with 20 homers allowed each, followed by injury list resident Bowden Francis (19) and then Kevin Gausman (17). Closer Jeff Hoffman has surrendered the most among Jays relievers with 10.

Berrios led the team in that department in 2025 with 31, followed by Gausman (20) and Bassitt (18).

The Jays pitching situation will be the topic of a loud narrative for the remainder of the season with so many points, both fair or unfair. The struggles of Hoffman on Sunday — he walked in the tying run in the eighth and couldn't locate the plate in the ninth — will be prominent, as will how the rotation will unfold when Shane Bieber returns to the big leagues at some point in the next week or two.

Buck Martinez nailed it on the Sportsnet broadcast when he introduced Mason Fluharty's entrance into the game with the bases loaded and back-to-back former MVP's due up.

Clement and Varsho hit homers as Blue Jays kick off homestand with 5-1 win over Cubs

Blue Jays third baseman Ernie Clement celebrates his three-run homer against the Chicago Cubs during the fourth inning of a Major League Baseball game in Toronto on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nathan Denette TORONTO — Ernie Clement hit a three-run homer and Jose Berrios threw 5 1/3 effective innings as the Toronto Blue Jays kicked off a six-game homestand Tuesday with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. With Daulton Varsho and Ty France aboard in the fourth inning, Clement turned on a first-pitch slider from Javier Assad for his ninth homer of the season. Varsho added a solo shot in the eighth inning for his 12th homer of the year. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits for the Blue Jays, who improved their American League-best record to 70-50. Toronto also owns the best home record in the AL at 39-19. Berrios (9-4) struggled with control at times — he issued four walks — but still kept the Cubs (67-51) in check. He held them to two hits and did not give up a run. The right-hander escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third by fanning cleanup hitter Carson Kelly, one of three strikeouts on the night. Assad (0-1), reinstated from the 60-day injured list before the game, allowed four earned runs and eight hits over four innings. He had two strikeouts and one walk. The Cubs scored their lone run in the seventh inning when Michael Busch drove in Dansby Swanson with a single. Chicago loaded the bases before Brendon Little struck out Pete Crow-Armstrong to end the threat. Mason Fluharty, Tommy Nance, Louis Varland and Jeff Hoffman also worked in relief for the Blue Jays in front of a sellout crowd of 43,003. Toronto outhit Chicago 12-4. The game took two hours 43 minutes to play. KEY MOMENT Guerrero and Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette delivered a highlight-reel play in the fourth inning. Bichette speared a Nico Hoerner grounder and made a rainbow throw to first base from the outfield grass. Guerrero nearly did the splits to get Hoerner by a quarter step for the out. KEY STAT The Blue Jays improved to 23-11 against National League opponents. It's the best winning percentage (. 677) in interleague play in the major leagues. UP NEXT The three-game series continues Wednesday at Rogers Centre. Kevin Gausman (8-8, 3.85 earned-run average) was scheduled to start for Toronto against fellow right-hander Cade Horton (6-3, 3.18). Shohei Ohtani lines into triple play and later homers, but Angels rally to beat Dodgers 7-6 in 10

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani lined into a triple play in the sixth inning and hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth, but the Los Angeles Angels rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Jo Adell's walkoff single in the 10th on Tuesday night. The defending World Series champion Dodgers fell into a first-place tie with San Diego atop the NL West after their third consecutive loss. Ohtani put the Dodgers up 6-5 when he homered in his fourth consecutive game, crushing a cutter from Kenley Jansen for his NL-leading 43rd. He also rebounded smartly after being involved in the eighth triple play in Angels history. Shortstop Zach Neto caught Ohtani's liner up the middle, stepped on second to get Miguel Rojas and threw to first, where Nolan Schanuel tagged out Dalton Rushing. The Angels rallied in a drama-filled ninth. Luis Rengifo singled and scored on Schanuel's sacrifice fly before Ben Casparius (7-5) struck out Taylor Ward with the bases loaded. After Connor Brogdon (3-1) pitched a clean 10th for the Angels, Christian Moore moved Ward to third with a bunt single. Adell ended it with a high chopper that got over the Dodgers' drawn-in infield. Rushing hit his second homer for the Dodgers, who have lost all five meetings with the Angels this season. They're also sharing the NL West lead for the first time since June 13 after San Diego won its fourth straight at San Francisco. Ward hit his 28th homer and drove in two runs for the Angels. Key moment Ohtani's blast had a 114.8-mph exit velocity. He moved past Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber for the NL homers lead after hitting five in six games. Ohtani also has an 11-game hitting streak. Key stat Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Jansen hadn't allowed an earned run in 21 consecutive appearances, the longest streak of his stellar career. Up next Ohtani (0-0, 2.37 ERA) pitches at Angel Stadium on Wednesday, facing Kyle Hendricks (6-8, 4.63). ___ AP MLB:
