Thurs 26, 6pm: 'Forgotten Heritage: The Santons of the Mareotide' conference presented by Professor of History Ismael Awad, in Arabic and French, will be moderated by Giuseppe Cecere, Associate Professor of Arabic Language and Literature, University of Bologna. This is a scientific research project documenting all the shrines and tombs in the Lake Mariout area. It is led by the French Centre for Alexandrian Studies, in collaboration with the artist Samar Bayoumi as a professional photographer. Funded by the Barakat Trust Charitable Foundation in England, the project is based on a cartographic study conducted by Dr. Ismail Awad on numerous topographic map collections, ranging from maps of the French expedition engineers in 1801 to modern satellite images. The project aims to document all the shrines existing since the beginning of the nineteenth century and trace their development through maps until 2024.
(7pm) Following the conference will be the opening of the exhibition 'In the Presence of the Sacred' organized by photographer Samar Bayoumi and Ismael Awad.

Egypt Details Extensive Humanitarian Efforts to Support Gaza Amid Border Closures
Ahmed Emam Egypt has revealed new figures showcasing its extensive role in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, despite severe restrictions at border crossings since the Israeli takeover of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing on May 7, 2024. According to a video statement, aid convoys begin their journey from Egypt's Al-Arish Airport, which has so far received 1,022 aircraft carrying over 27,247 tonnes of international assistance. Al-Arish Port has also welcomed 32 ships delivering around 74,779 tonnes of relief supplies. Trucks loaded with aid travel through Egyptian territory to the Rafah crossing, then to the Al-Auja crossing and the Nitzana checkpoint for inspection — a process that takes between 18 and 24 hours before supplies are transferred into Gaza via the Palestinian Red Crescent. Aid destined for UNRWA enters through the Kerem Shalom crossing. The closure of Rafah has increased reliance on airdrops and Kerem Shalom operations. Despite Israeli restrictions — highlighted by over 100 international NGOs — Egypt, led by its Armed Forces, has managed to deliver more than 70% of all aid reaching Gaza. This includes 45,125 trucks carrying over 500,000 tonnes of medical and food supplies, comprising 368,000 tonnes of Egyptian aid and 132,000 tonnes from other countries, along with 209 ambulances and 81,380 tonnes of fuel. The Egyptian Armed Forces have conducted 168 airdrops from the Egyptian side, delivering 3,730 tonnes of aid, while Egyptian hospitals have treated more than 18,560 injured Palestinians. Between July 27 and August 4, 2025, 1,341 trucks entered Gaza via Kerem Shalom, although over 5,000 trucks remain stranded in Egypt awaiting the reopening of border crossings. During this period, 25 airdrops carrying 24 tonnes of aid were also conducted. Turkish Ambassador Donates Rare Historical Books to Great Cairo Library
H-Tayea Turkish Ambassador to Egypt Salih Mutlu Şen visited the Great Cairo Library, also known as Princess Samiha's Palace, where he toured its halls and learned about its vast collection and cultural activities. He was received by the library's director, Yahya Riyad Youssef, who explained that the institution houses around 120,000 books in Arabic, English, and French. During his visit, Ambassador Şen presented the library with a selection of significant works, accompanied by a personal message. These included: Three Centuries: The History of a Family in Turkey and Egypt by Amina Fouad Tugay, niece of King Fouad, recently published in Egypt with the Ambassador's support. Islamic Monuments in the Ottoman Era, published in Istanbul by IRCICA under the patronage of Prof. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu. From the Banks of the Nile to the Bosphorus, a bilingual Turkish-English work on the life and cultural heritage of the Muhammad Ali dynasty between Istanbul and Cairo. Remembering Ottoman Egypt: Ottoman Consciousness in Egypt, an English-language doctoral thesis analyzing the Ottoman legacy in Egypt. Turkish Cuisine with Centuries-Old Recipes, exploring Turkey's rich culinary traditions. The Ottoman State: History and Civilization, another IRCICA publication. The Turks in Egypt and Their Cultural Heritage by Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, a key contribution to the understanding of shared Turkish-Egyptian history and figures. Among People by Mehmet Arif Pasha, published in Ottoman Turkish, chronicling the lives of Muhammad Ali Pasha and Ibrahim Pasha. History of Egypt in the Ottoman Era, published by IRCICA. In total, sixteen books were donated, covering a wide spectrum of history, culture, and heritage. Director Yahya Riyad Youssef expressed deep gratitude for the Ambassador's generous contribution and guided him through various sections of the historic palace, which is carefully preserved as both a heritage landmark and a cultural hub. He highlighted the library's diverse monthly events and extended an invitation for the Ambassador to participate in future activities. Al-Azhar Grand Imam Inspects Aid Convoy to Gaza, Reaffirms Support for Palestinians
Mohamed Mandour The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Professor Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zakat and Charities Fund, inspected the preparations of the eleventh relief convoy organized by the Fund to support the people of the Gaza Strip. The convoy is scheduled to depart at dawn on Tuesday, in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis caused by ongoing Israeli aggression, severe famine, and a suffocating blockade. The Grand Imam emphasized that this convoy is part of Al-Azhar's longstanding religious and humanitarian commitment to the Palestinian cause. It reflects the institution's unwavering solidarity with the besieged people of Gaza, who have endured a relentless humanitarian catastrophe for nearly two years due to continued aggression and the deprivation of basic necessities. He affirmed that Al-Azhar will persist in offering all possible support to the Palestinian cause and the people of Gaza and Palestine. The convoy includes over 1,000 fully equipped shelter tents, thousands of tons of food supplies, clean water, medical and essential living supplies, as well as infant formula, diapers, medicines, and other healthcare essentials. This urgent response comes in light of international and local reports warning of famine and unprecedented levels of suffering, particularly in northern Gaza. The Grand Imam had recently called for the swift resumption of relief convoys following the reopening of aid entry points into Gaza. He stressed that the ongoing starvation and destruction inflicted on the Palestinian people necessitate a collective and intensified effort by the Muslim Ummah and the global community to break the blockade, alleviate the suffering of Gaza's residents, especially children and women, and uphold their right to a dignified life. For its part, Zakat and Charities Fund affirmed that this convoy forms part of the relief bridge launched at the beginning of the global campaign "Rescue Gaza", which was initiated by the Grand Imam under the slogan "Strive with your wealth… Support Palestine."
