Ex-England skipper Paul Ince gets 12-month ban for drink-driving
Ince admitted driving his black Range Rover while over the limit on June 28 in Cheshire.
The ex-England captain had a reading of 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when he was stopped by police, Chester Magistrates court heard on Friday.
Nigel Jones, prosecuting, said: 'On the day in question, the defendant was witnessed by an off-duty police officer driving a vehicle perceived to be swerving across the road.' He said the 57-year-old's car swerved across the central reservation, hitting bollards and causing two tyres to burst.
Frank Rogers, defending Ince, said: 'My client finds himself today facing the huge impact of a ban, but he accepts he only has himself to blame for that.
'He misjudged the fact he believed at the time he would be under the limit.' Rogers said Ince had been at Heswall Golf Club and had not eaten before having two drinks in the clubhouse.
'He felt fine to drive, of course we now know that he shouldn't have done,' Rogers said.
District Judge Jack McGarva told Ince: 'The message has got to be if you're going to drive you don't drink at all.' Ince, who also played for Inter Milan and West Ham, earned 53 caps for England, winning two Premier League titles among a host of trophies during his six years as a United midfielder.
He moved into management after retiring, with his most recent spell in charge at Reading ending in 2023. — AFP

Soccer-Spurs captain Son says he is leaving the club
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Europa League - Final - Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United - San Mames, Bilbao, Spain - May 21, 2025 Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min during the warm up before the match REUTERS/Andrew Couldridge/File Photo SEOUL (Reuters) -Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min will bring his 10-year spell with the Premier League club to an end this summer, the 33-year-old South Korean said on Saturday. Son, who is under contract until 2026, led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with their win over Manchester United in the Europa League final in May, having joined the North London club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. While Son did not disclose his next destination, British media have linked him with a move to Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC. "I have decided to leave the team this summer," Son said at a press conference ahead of Spurs' pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday. "I think it was one of the most difficult decisions I've ever made in my football career. Playing football and being with one team for 10 years is something I am very proud of, but I think I gave my all to the team every single day. "I did my best on the field and off the field, and by winning the Europa League, I thought I'd done everything I could and achieved." Son has made 454 appearances for Spurs and scored 173 goals. He won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season. "It was the place where I grew a lot as a football player and a person, so I have a very grateful heart." Manager Thomas Frank said Son was "truly Spurs legend in every aspect". "I like that the club has been open to it because it is never, never easy to find that perfect timing ... I think it is probably the perfect timing going out on a high," he added. (Reporting by Hyunjoo Jin; writing by Pearl Josephine Nazare in Bengaluru; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

James Milner honours Diogo Jota with Brighton jersey number switch
JAMES MILNER will switch to the number 20 shirt at Brighton & Hove Albion this season in honour of his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who passed away in a car accident in Spain last month. Jota and his brother Andre Silva lost their lives in early July when their Lamborghini left the road and caught fire in northwestern Spain. The Portuguese forward had worn the number 20 during his successful spell at Liverpool, where he and Milner shared the dressing room for three seasons before the English midfielder moved to Brighton in 2023. 'Once I heard Carlos (Baleba) was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and obviously pay tribute to Diogo Jota,' Milner said. '(He was) an amazing player I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. So it'd be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League.' Liverpool have announced they will permanently retire the number 20 following discussions with Jota's wife, Rute, and his family. The number will no longer be used at any level, including the women's team and academy. Milner, 39, recently extended his contract with Brighton for another year and is closing in on Premier League history. With 638 appearances, he is just 15 games short of surpassing Gareth Barry's all-time record of 653. - Reuters

Numbers mean nothing as men's doubles eye redemption in Paris
PETALING JAYA: Numbers alone won't win titles, and the doubles squad know that having four men's doubles pairs at the World Championships is no guarantee of success. Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King were the last pair to make the cut for the world meet from Aug 25-31 in Paris. They were initially second on the reserve list but earned a spot following the withdrawal of several other pairs. The world No. 24 duo will join Asian champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, as well as independent pair and former world No. 1s Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, in the prestigious meet. National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky welcomed the strong representation for the world meet, but was quick to point out that stiff competition awaits. 'Having more pairs doesn't necessarily translate to success. What's important is preparing well in order to win,' said Rexy. 'This isn't about how many pairs are going to Paris, it's about how well we train and how much we put into it. Rexy's concerns are valid, as five months ago the men's doubles camp suffered a major blow at the All-England. Malaysia had six pairs in the world's oldest tournament, with the added presence of newly-appointed Indonesian coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, but the shuttlers returned empty-handed and delivered a disappointing performance in Birmingham. Still, Rexy is hoping his players can produce better results this time around, especially Arif-Roy King, who will be making their debut at the tournament. 'My hope is that they can deliver a strong performance in their first World Championships appearance,' he added. The players now have three weeks to sharpen their gameplay before departing for Paris on Aug 21, five days after the singles shuttlers, who are scheduled to leave on Aug 16. Leong Jun Hao, K. Letshanaa, and Justin Hoh will first head to Denmark for intensive training with the Danish national squad before regrouping with the rest of the team in Paris. The tournament draw is expected to take place on Aug 13.
