Birdlife SA launches revised Red Data Book
Birdlife South Africa are proud to launch the revised Red Data Book of Birds of South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini 2025 (RDB-online).
This is a comprehensive, freely accessible online resource revealing the conservation status of the region's birds.
This announcement was made during their annual general meeting in Cape Town on Saturday (May 24), marking a pivotal moment for regional bird conservation.
Many of the birds listed as vulnerable or critically endangered can still be found within 50km of Ladysmith KZN. This includes White Winged Flufftails, Lesser Flamingos, Secretary Birds, White Backed Vultures, Grey Crowned Cranes and Crown Eagles, to name but a few.
The revised Red Data Book was put together over three years.
More than 137 ornithologists, conservationists and citizen scientists collaborated on 193 detailed reports to quantify 'risk of extinction' for the region's birds. This extends to an additional 70 endemic and near-endemic species still considered to be at a lower risk of extinction, such as the Cape Sugarbird and Orange-breasted Sunbird.

The RDB-online provides insights into the conservation threats faced by the region's birds, as well as the effect of countermeasures put in place to protect them.
The findings are alarming yet hopeful, and provide crucial insights into threats and clear pathways for conservation action.
Ladysmith Birders president Peter Nelson had this to say about RDB-online, 'This is a seriously useful resource. I would recommend that everyone goes to look at the web page, as it's well worth the time.'

Rescue puppies bring pawsitive energy to yoga event
People gathered at K9 Classroom on Saturday to take part in a Puppy Yoga event that was organised by two animal lovers, Bonine Cronje and Barbara Roux in collaboration with Place a Pup, a non-profit organisation that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes puppies. The event was serene and emotionally uplifting as participants rolled out their yoga mats in preparation. They were given wireless headphones through which they listened to the yoga instructor's directions and calming background music. The puppies ran around in excitement, stealing hearts and getting pats, pets, and hugs from the participants throughout the day. People were left feeling more relaxed, emotionally lighter, and deeply connected – not just to the animals, but to themselves and the community around them. To ensure the puppies' safety, volunteers from both Place a Pup and K9 Classroom monitored the pups throughout the session to ensure they were comfortable and free to explore at their own pace. According to Barbara, the feedback from participants was amazing. Many described the experience as soothing, unique, and joyful. Other guests even expressed interest in adopting a puppy, which is one of the event's most meaningful outcomes. 'Place a Pup was recently given a notice to vacate the premises they rent,' Barbara says. 'Our next goal is to help them raise funds for a permanent home through their BackaBuddy campaign.' Two bakkies collide on N4
An urgent call for emergency responders was made on the Traffic Alert group at 18:00 after two vehicles collided on the N4 between the Hendrina and Bethal off-ramps, in eMalahleni's direction. According to first responders, one of the vehicles is an armored vehicle, and firearms were scattered across the road. uThukela to install 100 toilets in Zwelisha area
uThukela Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala officially handed over a sanitation infrastructure project in Ward 28 of Alfred Duma Local Municipality on Tuesday (June 3). The project will see 100 Ventilated Improved Pit latrines installed in the Zwelisha area (Ward 28). The mayor expressed the municipality's commitment to extending basic services to all communities. 'We are pleased to bring this vital service to the residents of Zwelisha. The local ward councillor made the request to the municipality and we have responded by allocating 100 toilets for this area,' said Shabalala. Highlighting the improved technology, Shabalala stated that the new latrines use chemical treatments that enable waste to decompose, eliminating the need to dig new pits when the toilets are full; a significant improvement from the traditional system. The project, valued at R1.6 million, is expected to be completed within six months and will create about 30 employment opportunities for local residents. The contractor is DLV Projects, who confirmed that construction is set to begin this coming Sunday (June 8).
