Yankees release veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman after a busy trade deadline
MIAMI (AP) — The New York Yankees released veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman on Friday, a day after making a flurry of moves at baseball's trade deadline.
Stroman, who is in his 11th season in the majors, was cut ahead of the opener of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins.
The Yankees acquired All-Star relievers David Bednar and Camilo Doval, as well as utilityman Jose Caballero in separate trades Thursday. New York also optioned right-handers Ian Hamilton and Yerry de los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room on the 26-man roster.
Stroman signed a two-year deal worth $37 million with New York before the start of last season and is still owed the rest of his $18.5 million salary. He has an $18 million conditional player option for 2026 that would be exercised if he pitches 140 or more innings in 2025. Stroman has pitched only 39 innings so far this season — he missed 2 1/2 months with left knee inflammation.
He made his ninth start of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, picking up the win after allowing four runs and six hits in five innings.
Stroman is 3-2 with a 6.23 ERA.

Almost getting no-hit at home, lifeless Mets are swept by Guardians and booed by fans
NEW YORK — The boos began to cascade down from the peaks of Citi Field in the bottom of the sixth inning and continued with each passing Mets at-bat. None of the team's players could put an end to it through the eighth inning. Cleveland Guardians right-handed starting pitcher Gavin Williams was tormenting the home side and their fans. The Mets were no-hit for 25 outs against the Guardians before Juan Soto provided an abrupt jolt with a ninth-inning solo shot. Yet it was another lifeless performance for the Mets, who dropped a 4-1 result in front of 40,072 fans Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field. The loss was the Mets' fourth straight and eighth in their last nine games as they slipped to 63-52 on the season. They went without a hit for 15 innings between Tuesday and Wednesday's losses after they were held in check after the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 3-2 loss after striking twice in the opening two innings. The only baserunners for the Mets through the opening eight innings Wednesday were Brandon Nimmo, who walked in the second and third innings, and Cedric Mullins, who also walked in the bottom of the second. Soto saved this version of the Mets from a becoming a piece of unfortunate history. The Mets had been held without a hit five times in their history, with the last no-hitter coming on Oct. 3, 2015, when then-Nationals starter Max Scherzer struck out 17 batters with Yunel Escobar reaching on an error. They had a close call last season when J.D. Martinez broke up a Braves no-hit attempt with a two-out, opposite-field home run with two outs in the ninth inning on May 11, 2024. The only solace for the Mets came away from their home field, where the Phillies were taken down by the Orioles in Philadelphia to keep the margin at 2.5 games between the National League East foes. David Peterson had been the Mets' most successful stopper throughout the season but would have needed to provide a near-perfect performance to lift up his side on Wednesday afternoon. Instead, he allowed more than two runs for the first time since June 27 when he gave up a second-inning solo shot to David Fry and a two-run shot to Angel Martinez in the top of the third. The Guardians tacked on one more run off the Mets left-hander on an RBI triple by Gabriel Arias in the top of the sixth inning. Roman Anthony, Boston Red Sox Reportedly Agree to Mammoth 8-Year Extension
It took 46 games for the Boston Red Sox to determine that Roman Anthony should be a prominent figure in their future. Anthony and the Red Sox have agreed to an eight-year, $130 million extension, ESPN reported on Wednesday. The contract keeps Anthony in Boston through 2034, includes a club option in the final year of the deal and could be worth as much as $230 million. The 21-year-old outfielder, who had been considered the top prospect in MLB, made his big-league debut in June. To date, the left-handed-hitting Anthony has totaled two home runs and 19 RBIs, while boasting a .283/.400/.428 slash line. He has started at both corner outfield positions, primarily right field, while also making 13 starts as the team's designated hitter. The Red Sox selected Anthony with the No. 79 pick in the 2022 MLB Draft out of high school. He began the 2025 season in Triple-A, after first reaching the level in August 2024. The Red Sox are 64-51, good for the No. 1 AL wild-card seed; they're three games back of the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the American League East.
