Chris Wilder leaves Sheffield United after promotion near miss
The 57-year-old, who guided his hometown club from League One to the top flight at the end of the 2018-19 season, leaves Bramall Lane for a second time after failing to lead the Blades to the Premier League last season.
Wilder returned to the Blades in December 2023 after Paul Heckingbottom was sacked with the club bottom of the Premier League.

A club statement said: 'Sheffield United can confirm a mutually agreed decision has been reached for manager Chris Wilder to leave the football club.
'Chris will leave alongside coaches Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge, and in doing so depart with the best wishes and gratitude of everyone connected with Sheffield United.
'A Blade through and through, the legacy Chris and his staff have created here will never be forgotten, going right back to 2016 when he initially took the job with the club rooted in League One.
'Between 2016 and 2021, he guided the club to two promotions and a ninth-place finish in the Premier League, creating an era which will go down as one of the most fondly remembered in the club's history.'
The statement added: 'After returning to the club during a difficult period in 2023, he has provided stability and created a new team which earned a Steel City derby double amongst other notable highlights last season.
'Showing his calibre as a manager, he guided the club to (a) third-place finish, collecting 92 points, before a heartbreaking conclusion in the play-off final.
'Our owners, COH Sports, would wish to place on record our thanks to Chris and his staff for their efforts whilst at the helm and will be extending their own appreciation in due course.'
Under Wilder, the South Yorkshire club finished third behind Leeds and Burnley and were beaten by Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley despite taking the lead.
That came as a huge disappointment, with United having been heavily involved in the race for automatic promotion before winning just two of their final seven regular-season games to slip 10 points off the pace.
Former Blades defender Wilder made 126 appearances for the club in two spells during a playing career which also involved stints with Southampton, Rotherham, Notts County, Bradford, Brighton and Halifax.
American-based consortium COH Sports, who completed a takeover in December last year, had handed Wilder a new contract until the end of the 2027-28 season in January.

Man City's Phil Foden keen to prove doubters wrong after ‘difficult season'
Phil Foden is determined 'to prove people wrong' and bounce back from a frustrating 2024-25 campaign. The star player as Manchester City won a fourth successive Premier League title the season before last, Foden lost his spark amid an underwhelming team performance. But now feeling refreshed after a short break, the 25-year-old shone as City kicked off their challenge at the Club World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Foden opened the scoring after just two minutes against the Moroccans and then delivered the corner from which Jeremy Doku claimed the second just before the break. For the England international it was an immediate justification of his decision to sit out the recent internationals to prepare for this summer's tournament in the United States. Foden said: 'It was a difficult season. I'm not going to lie, it was not the best. 'But I got a little bit of time off, rested. New start, new me. Just looking forward to the season. 'The hunger inside me is back and I want to prove people wrong.' Having represented England at Euro 2024, Foden says he 'can't remember' the last time he had a significant spell of rest. 'Not a lot of footballers these days get much time off, so it was very important,' he said. 'I struggled to switch off completely but I just rested with the family, did my own thing and stuff. I needed it.' Foden, playing a deeper role than usual, was instrumental in a side featuring two debutants in Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. None of the four-strong captaincy group revealed by manager Pep Guardiola on the eve of the match – Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Ruben Dias or Erling Haaland – started, leaving goalkeeper Ederson to wear the armband. Their Moroccan opponents had some bright moments as City as tempered their game in difficult, humid conditions but the Premier League side remained in control. The only blot on their afternoon was the late sending-off of defender Rico Lewis for a sliding challenge in which he caught Samuel Obeng in the face. Foden said: 'It was very good, obviously, to start the tournament off with a win. It was massively important. 'When they had the ball I was playing as a holding midfielder, so it's something I've not been used to but I enjoyed it. I want to be in the middle as much as I can. 'I'm working on things that I can improve but I'm happy to get back in with the goals, and creating chances as well. That's what I want to do. 'We want to try and put last year behind us and get back to how we used to be. The determination is definitely there.'

Trent Alexander-Arnold hails ‘incredible' Real Madrid debut despite stalemate
Trent Alexander-Arnold's dream debut for Real Madrid was tempered by frustration as Al Hilal denied them victory in their Club World Cup opener. The former Liverpool defender was included in the starting line-up at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium along with Dean Huijsen – a summer signing from Bournemouth – but they and their team-mates had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Asked about the experience afterwards, Alexander-Arnold told DAZN: 'An incredible day. To have made a debut for Real Madrid is something, I think, almost every player dreams of, so to be able to achieve it is huge for me. ☝️🤍 It's a @realmadriden debut kind of day! — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) June 18, 2025 'Of course, there's some disappointment in there to have not won the game. It's the mentality you need to have as a Real Madrid player, to want and expect to win every game that you playing, so disappointed not to do that. 'But there were a lot of positives, especially in the second half.' The England international was warmly received by the Madrid fans as he played the opening 65 minutes, and thanked them for their support. He added: 'Incredible. I felt the support from the moment I signed with the club, to be honest. Absolutely sensational. Our fanbase is global, truly global, all over the world and you feel it every single day, the fans at training grounds and the hotel, all over social media as well. New beginnings. @realmadrid | #FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 18, 2025 'The support is incredible, so a huge thank you for that. Of course, we dominated the stands today as well, which was incredible. The support is truly amazing.' If Alexander-Arnold's debut was one of the talking points before the game, it was goalkeeper Bono who was Al Hilal's hero as he saved a late penalty to deny the Spaniards victory. The 34-year-old Morocco international kept out Federico Valverde's stoppage-time spot-kick to ensure it finished all square in the Group H opener in what was a first game in charge for both Madrid boss Xabi Alonso and opposite number Simone Inzaghi. Ruben Neves converted a 41st-minute penalty to cancel out Gonzalo Garcia's opener, but his efforts would have counted for little had it not been for Bono's heroics. Rico Lewis was controversially sent off as Manchester City launched their Club World Cup campaign with a comfortable victory over Wydad Casablanca. Goals from Phil Foden – his first since January – and Jeremy Doku at each end of the first half proved enough for City to see off the Moroccan side 2-0 in Philadelphia. But the Group G encounter ended on a sour note for the Premier League outfit as Lewis was shown a straight red card for catching Samuel Obeng in the face following a challenge two minutes from time. Lincoln Financial Field, home of the reigning Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles, was at nowhere near its 67,594 capacity, but the atmosphere generated – mainly the Wydad Casablanca supporters – by the 37,446 present was still lively. 12 goals to close out the first round of the #FIFACWC group stage. ⚽️ — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 19, 2025 City were soon knocked off the top of Group G as Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao both scored twice in Juventus' 5-0 win over Al Ain. Karim Onisiwo grabbed the winner as Red Bull Salzburg beat Pachuca 2-1.
