Trent Alexander-Arnold hails ‘incredible' Real Madrid debut despite stalemate

Asked about the experience afterwards, Alexander-Arnold told DAZN: 'An incredible day. To have made a debut for Real Madrid is something, I think, almost every player dreams of, so to be able to achieve it is huge for me.
'Of course, there's some disappointment in there to have not won the game. It's the mentality you need to have as a Real Madrid player, to want and expect to win every game that you playing, so disappointed not to do that.
'But there were a lot of positives, especially in the second half.'
The England international was warmly received by the Madrid fans as he played the opening 65 minutes, and thanked them for their support.
He added: 'Incredible. I felt the support from the moment I signed with the club, to be honest. Absolutely sensational. Our fanbase is global, truly global, all over the world and you feel it every single day, the fans at training grounds and the hotel, all over social media as well.
'The support is incredible, so a huge thank you for that. Of course, we dominated the stands today as well, which was incredible. The support is truly amazing.'
If Alexander-Arnold's debut was one of the talking points before the game, it was goalkeeper Bono who was Al Hilal's hero as he saved a late penalty to deny the Spaniards victory.
The 34-year-old Morocco international kept out Federico Valverde's stoppage-time spot-kick to ensure it finished all square in the Group H opener in what was a first game in charge for both Madrid boss Xabi Alonso and opposite number Simone Inzaghi.
Ruben Neves converted a 41st-minute penalty to cancel out Gonzalo Garcia's opener, but his efforts would have counted for little had it not been for Bono's heroics.

Rico Lewis was controversially sent off as Manchester City launched their Club World Cup campaign with a comfortable victory over Wydad Casablanca.
Goals from Phil Foden – his first since January – and Jeremy Doku at each end of the first half proved enough for City to see off the Moroccan side 2-0 in Philadelphia.
But the Group G encounter ended on a sour note for the Premier League outfit as Lewis was shown a straight red card for catching Samuel Obeng in the face following a challenge two minutes from time.
Lincoln Financial Field, home of the reigning Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles, was at nowhere near its 67,594 capacity, but the atmosphere generated – mainly the Wydad Casablanca supporters – by the 37,446 present was still lively.

City were soon knocked off the top of Group G as Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao both scored twice in Juventus' 5-0 win over Al Ain.
Karim Onisiwo grabbed the winner as Red Bull Salzburg beat Pachuca 2-1.

Van Bronckhorst told Liverpool move would end career

The 50-year-old is rumoured to be a candidate for Arne Slot's backroom team at the Premier League champions, following John Heitinga's departure to Ajax. Van Bronckhorst, who has been working in the media since leaving Besiktas last November, would join fellow Dutchman Slot at Liverpool. However, former Dutch footballer Hans Kraay Jr believes this move would signal the end of van Bronckhorst's career as a manager. In his column for Voetbal International, Mr Kraay wrote: "At Feyenoord, apart from his first period, when he needed Dick Advocaat to keep himself in the saddle, he revealed that he quite enjoyed being a head coach. Read more: "In any case, if you are at a club that often wins, it is a much more enjoyable job than being a coach at RKC or Almere. "But in Feyenoord's championship year, with all the stress that comes with being a coach, he was quite relaxed, open and jovial towards us. "The championship helped a lot, of course. "After that, van Bronckhorst spread his wings and left for Rangers. "After a good start, it became quite stressful there. "I think this assistantship to Arne Slot means the end of his career as head coach, and also of the life in which you spend 168 hours a week on football."

Florian Wirtz has been given warning by Liverpool team-mate over position clash

The impending arrival of Florian Wirtz will give Arne Slot food for thought when it comes to his Liverpool midfield, which was a crucial component of their title-winning campaign Dominik Szoboszlai has made it clear he won't be rolling out the red carpet for Florian Wirtz to take his spot in the Liverpool side. With Wirtz set to complete a club record and potential British record move worth up to £116.5million, there's no doubt he'll be one of the first names on Arne Slot 's teamsheet next season. Quite where he'll be playing is a little less clear. He's primarily played in the No. 10 position for Bayer Leverkusen and Germany, although he has been occasionally used out wide. ‌ It's been claimed that Slot helped seal the deal by promising the 22-year-old he'd be first choice for the attacking midfield role, which Szoboszlai was mostly deployed in for the title-winning campaign. The Hungarian, 24, registered six goals and seven assists in the Premier League, although he is more used to staying centrally. ‌ That suggests he could be in more direct competition with Alexis Mac Allister next season. But Szoboszlai has warned his soon-to-be team-mate that he's ready for the "difficult" challenge of competing for a place in the team. When asked if he should be concerned about Wirtz's impending arrival, he told oghuncrew: 'No, I don't think so. Of course, if they buy a player for €150m, they probably won't keep him on the bench. 'But then we have to find a way to play together. If you say that it will be difficult for me, then we'll wait and see how it will be after pre-season. "In the end, you might be right, but I don't give up my place easily. I think he knows that getting into a Premier League-winning team is a hard job and takes work.' According to Slot's comments before Liverpool's penultimate game of the season away at Brighton, Szoboszlai does prefer playing slightly deeper. 'Dominik sees his best position as an eight as well, so it will be interesting to see how he does in this position," the Dutchman said. ‌ Ryan Graverberch made the holding role his own following Slot's arrival, and Mac Allister rivalled Szoboszlai's league goal contributions with five goals and five assists from a less advanced position. But with another hectic season ahead, the Reds boss will have the luxury of rotation that he lacked during his maiden campaign. While they ultimately cruised to the title, fatigue did seem to catch up with his side in the business end of the season. The likes of Wataru Endo, who's insisted he's staying put this summer, and Curtis Jones will be key from off the bench once again. It remains to be seen whether Harvey Elliott will still be amongst the Reds squad by the end of the transfer window, though. The 22-year-old is currently focused on the Under-21 Euros with England, but he faces a huge decision with his career at a crossroads. While Szoboszlai could well keep his place alongside Wirtz, Elliott is very much being pushed back down the pecking order. A loan move could offer a short-term solution, but his search for regular minutes might necessitate a permanent exit. Fans claim the 'game's GONE' as Mexican side deploy never-before-seen tactic at the Club World Cup

Fans have called out the use of a unique tactic at the Club World Cup, insisting it shows the 'game's gone'. Serie A giants Inter Milan faced Mexican outfit Monterrey in California earlier this week in the opening game of the tournament for both teams. With the match level at 1-1, Inter were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area, and Monterrey opted to deploy a never-before-seen tactic to defend it. Rather than putting up one wall, they set up a double wall with four players in each, while leaving a gap in the middle for the goalkeeper to get a clear view of the ball. The unusual setup worked as Inter failed to score from the set-piece, but most fans on social media were having none of it. 'Game's gone', commented one Instagram user after TNT Sports posted a photo of the double wall on their official account. One fan claimed the never-before-seen tactic was a sign that the 'game's gone' Another supporter described the double wall as 'woke nonsense' but Inter failed to score One Instagram user was thoroughly unimpressed by the double wall, branding it 'stupid' Another claimed Inter should have just passed the ball to one of their open players 'Woke nonsense', added another, while one fan simply wrote: 'This is stupid'. Meanwhile, one supporter insisted Inter had an easy solution at their disposal to the double wall that contained eight Monterrey players in total. 'So many open players to pass to,' they pointed out. However, the new tactic was not universally condemned as one fan replied on Instagram: 'Every team should do it'. The game ended up finishing 1-1 as Monterrey secured a hard-earned point. They had taken the lead through a header from Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos, but Inter equalised thanks to Lautaro Martinez. Monterrey have two more group games to come against River Plate and Urawa Red Diamonds, and it remains to be seen if they will deploy the double wall again. It is not the only unusual incident that has taken place at the Club World Cup this week. In a separate match between Uslan HD and Mamelodi Sundowns, South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was penalised for holding onto the ball for longer than eight seconds. Refereeing chiefs announced plans to clamp down on time-wasting by goalkeepers prior to the tournament, and Williams was caught out as Ulsan were awarded a corner for his infringement.
