
Major change to superannuation coming into force within days: What Australians need to know
If you have a job in Australia, you've probably noticed each of your payslips has a section telling you how much superannuation will be paid alongside your wages.
But while your wages are deposited in your bank account however frequently you receive a payslip – whether that's weekly, fortnightly or monthly – it's a different story for your super.
Under current superannuation laws, employers are only required to pay super into an employee's nominated fund at least four times a year – 28 days after the end of each quarter – although many do pay more regularly.
But that's set to change. From July 1 2026, new 'payday super' rules will require employers to pay super into the employee's fund within seven days of wages.
This reform was announced in the 2023–24 federal budget, allowing employers, superannuation funds and software providers three years to set up compliant systems. But it hasn't yet been legislated.
Now, some industry groups are calling for a further delay of up to two years. So, who are these reforms designed to benefit? And does business really need more time to get ready?
Missing or incorrect super
Missing or incorrect super payments present a huge problem for Australia's retirement system.
The Super Members Council claims one in four Australians are missing out on the correct amount of superannuation contributions.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) estimates A$5.2 billion of guaranteed superannuation went unpaid in 2021–22.
This can be due to payroll errors, misclassification under an award or, in extreme cases, non-payment of superannuation as a form of wage theft. All these things can be harder to spot when super is paid less frequently.
Rules only requiring super to be paid quarterly may have been appropriate 30 years ago, in the early days of the superannuation guarantee. Business systems were often not computerised, and wages were often paid in cash.
Times have changed
Payroll systems are now much more sophisticated.
From 2018, the federal government rolled out the single-touch payroll program that requires employers to report wages in real time, including details of superannuation guarantee withheld from an employee's wages.
The government is already benefiting from the increased automation of data submitted through this system.
Single-touch payroll data helps improve official labour statistics and provides up-to-date income information for employees through the MyGov portal.
Sending real-time data to Centrelink addresses one of the major flaws underpinning the Robodebt scandal, which used an averaging system to estimate fortnightly earnings.
Benefits for employees
In simple terms, the coming changes are basically a change in timing. Payments will be transferred to an employee's super fund in the same way their wages are transferred directly to their bank account.
Once bedded down, the changes will provide benefits across the board to employees, employers and the government.
Currently, if an employee believes the correct amount of superannuation is not being paid to their fund, they are expected to follow this up directly with the ATO.
Unfortunately, many employees presume the withheld amount shown on the payslip has already been paid into their super account.
Unless a member is actively monitoring their super balance, they may be unaware that the amount shown on their payslip is not being paid into their fund on a timely basis.
Benefits for business
Employers should also benefit from these changes, many of whom already do transfer superannuation when wages are paid.
Currently, superannuation guarantee payments are run on a separate payment cycle to payroll, coinciding with payment of tax liabilities. If payments are on the same cycle as payroll, it should make budgeting easier, and ensure the separate super payment run is not overlooked.
This assumes, of course, that the business is not relying on unpaid superannuation contributions to manage their cash flows elsewhere in the business. If that is the case, payday super changes will help protect the employee if the employer runs into financial difficulties.
The change will also allow the tax office to match deductions and payments in real time to detect fraud – and check that super is actually being paid. This can reduce audit costs and – in the long run – reduce reliance on the aged pension as super account balances improve.
Why wait any longer?
So, with all of these expected benefits, why has the financial services sector this month asked for implementation to be delayed further – by up to two years? The building blocks of the system – electronic payments to transfer funds and the government's single-touch payroll gateway – are already in place.
One challenge is legislative. Although announced in May 2023, the draft legislation was only released for consultation in March 2025.
The Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act 1992 needs extensive amendments to rewrite references to the calculation and payment of the superannuation guarantee charge.
The draft legislation also makes some changes to definitions that may impact on how systems must be set up for payday super. Although not intended to change entitlements, they need to be made accurate in the software.
Still, payday super has the potential to strengthen Australia's superannuation system, protecting employee contributions and smoothing the payment system for employers. Concerns around its implementation are largely due to the time it has taken for the draft legislation to emerge.
Following the election, the federal government has the numbers to pass this legislation as a matter of priority.

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) chief executive Mark Robinson has resigned and will officially leave his post at the end of 2025, the organisation has announced. How much do I need to save to build a £100,000 ISA pot?
Whether you are saving for retirement, looking at long-term wealth building or have a specific goal in mind for the future, Individual Savings Accounts (Isas) can be a great tool to help you achieve it. Gains made from money in them - interest earned, dividends or capital gains - are tax free and under current regulations, each person can save up to £20,000 in them every single tax year. What's more, the earlier you start, the greater your chances of hitting your long-term targets, as time can be the great multiplier when it comes to your money thanks to the effect of compounding. Therefore, even if you don't get anywhere near using up your £20,000 allowance, you can still set yourself lofty targets over time - such as a milestone figure of reaching £100,000. There are other types of Isa available, but here we'll look at cash and investing Isas. Cash ISA The most-used Isa type is the cash Isa. Right now with the interest rate on cash Isas somewhere around a competitive 4.5 per cent mark, you can not only earn a reasonable amount on your money, but you can also protect it from inflation, which is running at 3.5 per cent and not projected to drop below 3 per cent until next year at least. However, interest rates fluctuate a lot over time, meaning you may need to regularly check you are earning the best amount on your money. How long it takes to reach £100,000 depends on multiple factors, such as your initial deposit amount, ongoing contributions and your interest rate. Example 1: £2,000 lump sum to start and £250 saved per month, at an average of 3.5% interest. In this scenario, you would cross the £100,000 mark during your 22nd year of saving regularly. At that point you'd have saved £68,000 of your own money, earning an additional £35,000 in compounded interest. Example 2: No initial deposit but £400 a month saved at average 3.5% interest. Some people may have no lump sum to get started with, but have perhaps taken a new job or a pay rise - so bigger monthly savings are possible. In this scenario, year 16 would be the milestone - with more than £25,000 of the total £102,000 in the pot being interest earned, showing the importance of consistency. Investing ISA While the above examples use a flat 3.5 per cent interest rate for cash, there's no way of knowing what the rate will be a year or a decade from now - it could be far higher or lower, as could inflation. There may be a better way of reaching your target figure than purely cash, however: a stocks and shares Isa, sometimes called an investing Isa. Here, your money can be put into the stock market in search of better returns - over longer periods of time, investing has historically always outperformed cash. If it's not your area of expertise, there are plenty of automated options where you can simply select your risk tolerance or other preferences and let your money be allocated for you accordingly. In investing, there is no certainty though - cash savings remain as cash savings and are easily predictable. A typical World Index Fund has returned between 10 and 11 per cent annually over the last decade, while the FTSE 100 (the UK's biggest 100 listed companies) generated a 6.3 per cent annualised return over the 20 years from 2003 to 2023, including dividends. Neither are guarantees of the future, but many experts suggest over the long term, an annual return of 6-8 per cent is possible for investors - which over many years can have a significant difference when compared to cash saving rates. Example 1: £2,000 lump sum to start and £250 invested per month, with an annual 6.5 per cent return. After 18 years of investing at this rate you'd hit the £100,000 mark - and your own money would only make up half of this total. £56,000 would have been saved through your deposits, with just over £50,000 gains giving a total of £106,866. By year 20, your total gains would outstrip your own deposits and you'd have £127,000 all told. Example 2: No initial deposit but £400 a month invested, with an annual 6.5 per cent return. More money going in each month means the initial pot builds quicker, so £100,000 is reached by year 14. However, as that money has had less time to grow and compound, £67,200 is of your deposits compared to just under £41,000 in earnings. The tipping point for bigger gains comes in year 20 - by which time the total pot would be £192,000. The lesson remains: starting sooner rather than later is key, as time plays the biggest role in compounding money, even if you start with small amounts.

WPP boss Mark Read stepping down as advertisers grapple with rise of AI
WPP shares fell on Monday after the London-listed advertising group announced its chief executive plans to retire by the end of the year. Mark Read will step down from WPP at the end of 2025 after seven years in which fierce competition and the advance of artificial intelligence has weighed on the sector. Read, who spent 30 years at the owner of Ogilvy and GroupM before he replaced founder Sir Martin Sorrell in the top job, said he had built a simpler, stronger business, merging several agencies to better support clients. But WPP, which lost its crown as the biggest advertising group to France's Publicis last year, has struggled in a tough market. It told shareholders in February its growth would be flat at best this year and down 2 per cent at worst. Its shares have more than halved since Read took over in September 2018, and they fell to a five-year low in April. Its market capitalisation is around £6billion. Read said it was the right time to hand over to a new leader. Read will continue as chief executive for the remainder of the year, while the board starts a search for his successor. He succeeded Sorrell, who turned WPP into the world's largest advertising group through a string of takeovers, including J. Walter Thompson in 1987, Ogilvy in 1989, Young & Rubicam in 2000 and Grey in 2004. Read said on Monday: 'When I took on this role our mission was to build a simpler, stronger business, and put structure and new energy behind our creativity and performance, powered by world-leading technology. 'I am proud that our teams across the business have delivered that exceptionally well. Our clients today rate us more highly than ever before, we now work with four of the world's five most valuable companies, and our revenues with our biggest clients have grown consistently.' He added: 'After seven years in the role, and with the foundations in place for WPP's continued success, I feel it is the right time to hand over the leadership of this amazing company. I am excited to explore the next chapter in my life and can only thank all the brilliant people I have been lucky enough to work with over the last 30 years, and who have made possible the enormous progress we have achieved together.' Philip Jansen, chair of WPP and former boss of BT, said: 'On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Mark for his contributions not only as CEO but throughout his more than 30 years of leadership and service to the Company.' In its latest annual results, WPP, which owns the GroupM, Ogilvy and VML agencies, posted a 2 per cent rise in operating profit to just over £1.7billion on a like-for-like basis. Last week, S4 Capital, led by Martin Sorrell, cut its annual turnover guidance as technology companies remained cautious amidst heightened uncertainty.
