Hayden Panettiere reveals why she 'desperately needed' huge break from acting amid troubled personal life
Hayden Panettiere shared that her unplanned four-year acting break proved to be advantageous to her wellbeing.
The Nashville star, 35 — who previously opened up about her battles with alcohol and drug addition — said she 'desperately' needed the time off.
'I had taken four years off. Didn't know or plan to, but that's just the way it panned out,' Panettiere told Us Weekly while discussing her upcoming film, A Breed Apart.
'And I desperately needed it,' the actress — who previously sparked fears over 'slurred speech' and her tumultuous relationship with ex Brian Hickerson — added.
'I feel much more solid and grounded in this world, the crazy world that we live in,' Hayden, who made her acting comeback in 2023, went on.
The star then explained that the new version of herself is always 'evolving and changing.'
'It's healthy to continue to keep evolving as a person. Which I always try to do to keep reinventing ourselves and learning more things about ourselves and our wants and needs and dislikes and all the above.'
'But I've never been this version of me, I've never been as OK with being who I am without feeling the need to apologize for anything. I feel like I've finally earned the right to an opinion.'
She also thanked her reliable support system for encouraging her return to acting and helping her stay optimistic about the future.
Speaking about her new horror-comedy film, A Breed Apart, she said, 'The biggest thing that drew me to this character was the action part of it. It's fun. You get to be physical. I get to use my athleticism.'
'And also working with cameras and at the same time, and it's just like this perfect dance that has to be created. It adds a whole other element to what we do.'
Following her time on the show Nashville, which came to an end in 2018, Panettiere took a break from being in the spotlight.
In the following years, she publicly discussed her struggles with alcohol and drug addiction, which led to her daughter Kaya, nine, living in Ukraine with her former partner, boxer Wladimir Klitschko, 49.

She also faced the grief of losing her brother Jansen to an enlarged heart in 2023.
Panettiere made her return to acting in 2023 with Scream VI, once again playing Kirby Reed.
A Breed Apart will be released in theaters and on streaming services on Friday, May 16th.
During an interview with Women's Health in 2023, the actress explained what had caused her to begin her sobriety journey in 2021.
'I struggled with sleep deprivation. Sleep is massive. It affects your motor skills, your ability to think, and your overall health.'
She added, 'My body was like, "enough." I hit 30. My face was swollen. I had jaundice. My eyes were yellow. I had to go to a liver specialist.
'I was holding on to weight that wasn't normally there. My hair was thin and coming out in clumps.'
Last year, Hayden sparked concern for her health after 'slurring words' during interviews.
The actress has previously battled with opioid addiction as well as substance abuse - but has been in recovery since 2021.
In September 2024, she opened up to People about the death of her younger brother Jansen following his shock passing at age 28 due to an undiagnosed heart condition in February 2023 called cardiomegaly.
A 'concerning' video of the interview soon went viral - with the star also discussing her daughter Kaya.
Social media users speculated that Hayden was 'not sober' due to 'slurred speech' and looking exhausted.
Not long afterwards, Hayden broke her silence over the concern of her People interview on her own Instagram page.
'It's unfathomable that I'm even in this position, but I feel forced to address it in a space where I won't be criticized for how fast or slow I speak,' she explained to her followers.
Panettiere added that she hadn't slept for two days before the shoot due to her pet having an emergency and needing surgery.
'It was an 8-hour shoot followed by an on-camera interview that was supposed to last for 1 hour. The interview started well, and for the record, its beginning is not included in the version People Magazine posted. I was exhausted.
'My rep stopped the interview early as it became obvious that I was fading - especially as the subject matter became heavier.'
Hayden asked to re-do the interview but was told 'that it wasn't necessary' and added, 'The magazine does not grant approval for images or video interviews before they run. We see the interview when it goes live.'
The actress expressed that, 'Grief looks different on everyone. Whether or not I am on medication is none of anyone's business and is between me and my doctor.'
She also added, 'The real issue here is the toxicity of social media, and a news cycle that is driven by click bait.
'Mental health is so important, and I hope those reading this now understand that what you say hiding behind a computer screen can have a detrimental impact on someone.'
Hayden concluded with, 'For those of you who have come to my defense amidst this chaos I am so grateful. Like I've said before, I am a work in progress. We all are.'
However, she sparked worry once again as she sat down for a separate interview on Today.
During the interview, she promoted her film Amber Alert - as well as talking about her late brother and mental health.
In regards to her mental health following her brother's death, Hayden said, 'I thought that people would have empathy, was going to be the only thing that was there, but I had no idea how my body, my mind, was going to react to grief.
'It's wild what stress and grief and all these hormones and running through your body can do...'
She added, 'I mean, make you faint. My mother, when she got stressed - she's gonna kill me for saying this - she used to get knots on her head. It comes in all different forms, so nobody should be embarrassed by it or judged for it.'
When asked if she has 'processed' her brother's death, Panettiere admitted, 'I don't know that I fully have. I think it's something that transforms over time.'

'Australia's Most Sexually Active Woman' Annie Knight reveals her shock plans for the future - after being hospitalised for sleeping with 583 men in a single day
Annie Knight has teased another sex challenge after she was hospitalised for sleeping with 583 men in six hours. The OnlyFans model, 27, who has been dubbed 'Australia's Most Sexually Active Woman', was treated for cramps and excessive bleeding just days after her orgy. Now, she has taken to Instagram on Wednesday to tell her followers she is eager to do another challenge, as she gave them an update on her health. 'Did I get hospitalised for taking 583 guys in six hours? Yes. Do I regret it? No. Do I want to do it again? Also yes,' she said. 'I'm not sure exactly what I want to do. I want to do something fun and exciting.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'It doesn't necessarily need to be huge numbers, but something different that you guys want to see, or if you have any recommendations, let me know,' she added. 'By the way, bit of a health update. I'm doing well. I'm still having issues. 'I think that unfortunately medical professionals, specifically men, not always men though, tend to disregard women's health issues. 'I've been having these issues since January. It's been five months... I've been suffering. It's been really hard. Especially doing my job at the high level that I do it at. 'Having to push through my pain and push through things that are meant to be enjoyable.' However, she went on to say she was 'feeling amazing' during her 583 man challenge day and had 'a lot of fun'. 'But it has been very frustrating and I've contacted a naturopath, I've reached out to another specialist,' she added. 'I'm really trying to find answers because I cannot live like this forever. If I don't get answers soon, I'm going to lose my mind and have a nervous breakdown.' Annie was admitted to hospital last month just days after she participated in a sex challenge which saw her have sex with 583 men in a single day. The sex worker shared a video from her hospital bed after rushing in to be treated for cramps and excessive bleeding. Annie said the issue stems from her pre-existing endometriosis, which she says has been triggered by stress. 'On Sunday everything was all good, but the next day I had a lot of bleeding that I shouldn't really have because I'm on contraception and I was a little bit worried about it but decided I would wait it out and see how it goes,' she told Perth Now. 'Then it turned into really bad cramps and pains, then I started to get a bit worried and decided to take myself to hospital.' Annie added her doctors were at first concerned the bleeding and pain was a result of her intense challenge, but later ruled it out. 'We ran a bunch of tests all day, then eventually it was my endometriosis had been exasperated by mostly stress and not so much the physical challenge that I did on Sunday,' she said. Endometriosis occurs when cells in the lining of the uterus are found elsewhere in the body. Each month, these cells react in the same way as those in the uterus; building up, breaking down and bleeding. Yet, the blood has no way to escape the body. Symptoms include pain, heavy periods and fatigue, as well as a higher risk of infertility, and bowel and bladder problems. Its cause is unknown but may be genetic, related to problems with the immune system or exposure to chemicals. Treatment focuses on pain relief and improving quality of life, which may include surgery or hormone treatment. Annie was also in hospital with a mystery ailment just a month ago. At the time, she looked unwell as she lay in a bed in a photo shared by her fiancé Henry Brayshaw. In the Instagram Stories post, Annie wore a blue hospital gown and slept while surrounded by monitors. 'Wonder where the life support switch is?' Henry joked in the caption alongside the image. It was not explained by either Annie or Henry why the performer required the visit to hospital. The couple only recently announced they are set to marry following only one week of dating—though they have been friends for about a decade.

Davina McCall says 'we don't really need it' as she shares relationship update
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Davina McCall has revealed that she's constantly asked the same question, as she lifts the lid on a pivotal life decision. As one of the most esteemed presenters of her generation, Davina landed a career-defining role in the early 2000s that propelled her to fame. Landing a role on Big Brother not only catapulted her to success but also brought her together with her future partner, Michael Douglas, who was originally her hairstylist on the show. Years after initially forming a friendship, Davina and Michael began dating in 2019, sparking widespread speculation about a potential wedding. Addressing the marriage rumours in a recent Hello magazine interview, Davina confessed that the constant questioning has made her feel young again: "It's so funny - it's a bit like being in your 30s again, when everybody asks you the same question about whether you're getting married." (Image: undefined via Getty Images) However, she maintained that she and Michael don't feel the need to tie the knot, saying: "We're ensconced, but it's not part of our world at the moment. We don't really need it." The seasoned presenter appears unphased by the constant queries, instead choosing to focus on her relationship. (Image: undefined via Getty Images) She seems content with her current situation, free from the outside pressure and expectations surrounding marriage. The presenter gushed about her romance, saying: "It's a very different thing, dating in your 50s than when you're in your 30s. We're in a really good place and have so much fun together. I think we're really lucky to have each other." Their relationship faced a huge hurdle last November, however, when the presenter received a shock diagnosis of a brain tumour. (Image: undefined via Getty Images) Fortunately, the tumour was later found to be harmless after a successful surgery. Throughout the presenter's health struggles, Michael was by her side, providing emotional support and regularly updating fans on social media. The presenter recalled a particularly poignant moment before undergoing the surgery when Michael reassuringly said to her, as reported in Women's Health magazine: "You know, I've been in training for this moment. And I'm ready, you know, I've got your back."

Angelina Jolie's daughter Shiloh reveals new name after snubbing dad Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's child, born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, is now going by a new name. The 19-year-old appeared at the launch of Isabel Marant's capsule collection with Net-A-Porter on Thursday, May 29, in LA. Shiloh was listed as 'Shi Joli' in the event's press release, according to US Weekly. The name, which excludes her father's surname altogether, is seemingly a shortened version of her new legal name. Shi was credited at the event as a choreographer for a dance routine performed by Keoni Rose and Tako Suzuki to singer-songwriter Luella's new song Naïve. Shortly after her 18th birthday in May of last year, Shi filed documents to drop her famous dad's surname amid her parents' ongoing legal battles. She later announced her intention via an advert in the Los Angeles Times, per California law, and attended a hearing in August. According to People Magazine, the teenager was reportedly granted her wish and was legally allowed to change her name to Shiloh Jolie. Although Brad has not spoken publicly about the decision, an insider claimed that he was 'aware and upset' about the move. 'He's aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name,' a source told People Magazine. 'The reminders that he's lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them. It's very sad.' Shi was born in 2006, nearly a year after her parents started dating. Pitt and Jolie also share children Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16. Shi isn't the only one of her siblings to drop Pitt as a surname; her sister Zahara publicly introduced herself using only her mother's last name when she joined the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha at Spelman College. Vivienne also appears to have done the same, with her choice revealed on the playbill for musical The Outsiders, with the credits listing her just as 'Vivienne Jolie.' It remains unclear if any of the children besides Shi have legally changed their names. The news of Shi's name change comes after Pitt's revealing interview for the June issue of GQ magazine, in which he promoted his new movie F1 and addressed the finalization of his divorce from Jolie. 'No, I don't think it was that major of a thing,' Pitt said when asked if he felt any relief after the court proceedings finally wrapped up. 'Just something coming to fruition. Legally.' More Trending That legal journey began in 2016, when Jolie filed for divorce after two years of marriage and more than a decade together. What followed was a highly publicised and often acrimonious separation, encompassing custody disputes, property disagreements, and, more recently, a contentious fight over their jointly-owned French winery, Chateau Miraval. While the divorce was officially finalised in December 2023, many of the issues between the former couple continued to play out in court, casting a long shadow over both of their careers and public images. The legal proceedings were punctuated by allegations of abuse, which Pitt has denied. Got a story?
