Payment Outages Threaten £1.6 Billion in UK Retail & Hospitality Sales

Research also shows UK Businesses Average Over 5 Major Outages Annually, with 61% Occurring During Critical Peak Trading Times
London, UK, June 10, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A new study released today reveals the staggering cost of payment system failures to UK retail and hospitality businesses, estimating losses of £1.6 billion annually.
The research, conducted by FreedomPay and Dynatrace in partnership with Retail Economics, highlights the increasing frequency and impact of these disruptions on day-to-day trading, with consumers exhibiting low tolerance for delays. Adding to the concern, the study finds that 1 in 5 retail and hospitality businesses lack a secure digital backup when systems fail, exacerbating the potential for lost revenue.
The study indicates that these failures are not isolated incidents but a recurring operational challenge that disrupts service, damages customer trust, and negatively impacts revenue. UK businesses are reporting an average of over five major outages each year, with 61% occurring during peak trading periods, amplifying the financial impact.
"Consumer-facing businesses are operating in increasingly unpredictable conditions," says Chris Kronenthal, President, FreedomPay. "From extreme weather and power failures to cyber-attacks and system outages, disruption is no longer the exception, it's becoming the norm. The lack of planning by businesses, coupled with the fragility of existing infrastructure, is creating a perfect storm for revenue loss and reputational damage."
Key findings from the study include:
Consumer tolerance: Most consumers will only tolerate up to 6 minutes of payment disruption before becoming frustrated, with 22 minutes being the absolute limit. The average outage, however, lasts 84 minutes – far exceeding consumer patience.
Costly blind spots: Businesses are dangerously out of touch with consumer patience, overestimating their willingness to wait during payment disruptions (32 minutes vs. the actual 22 minutes) and failing to recognise the immediate customer attrition this misjudgement causes, leading to significant revenue loss and damaged brand reputation.
Payment system downtime is costly: If a payment system goes down between minutes 7 and 11, businesses could lose an average of £73 million in sales every minute.
Losses quickly add up: By minute 22 of the outage, total losses could reach £1.17 billion. That's a whopping 74% of all the revenue at risk.
Reliance on mobile and card payments continues to rise: Less than 30% of consumers always carry cash when visiting shops, restaurants, or leisure venues. The average amount carried is £35, which is less than the average in-store spend of £47.
Vulnerable consumers: Higher-income consumers, who tend to visit physical retail and hospitality venues more frequently and rely more heavily on digital payments, are disproportionately affected by payment disruptions.
Backup gaps: 22% of businesses study having no backup payment method beyond cash, and 7% have no fallback at all.
"Payment resilience isn't just an IT issue, it's a critical business capability', adds Alois Reitbauer, Chief Technology Strategist, Dynatrace. 'Outages don't just stop transactions; they break the customer journey and disrupt essential services. To stay resilient, businesses need real-time visibility, the agility to adapt in real time, and technologies that auto prevent and auto remediate disruptions. In a world where disruptions are inevitable, speed and insights are a business's most valuable safeguards."
"In today's hyper-competitive landscape, seamless payment experiences are non-negotiable,' states Richard Lim, CEO, Retail Economics. 'Our research underscores the critical need for retailers and hospitality businesses to prioritise payment resilience. The financial impact of outages is significant, but the erosion of customer trust and brand loyalty can cause long term damage. Investing in robust, fail-safe payment infrastructure isn't just about mitigating risk; it's about safeguarding future growth and maintaining a competitive edge."

Retailers fined for dodgy Black Friday sales

Three major Australian retailers have been fined for dodgy Black Friday sales. Jeweller Michael Hill, homewares retailer Global Retail Brands Australia, and Hairhouse Online have each paid a $19,800 fine following infringement notices from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the regulator says. Paying fines does not amount to an admission of breaking the Australian Consumer Law. The consumer watchdog issued the infringement notices after finding the retailers were selling non-discounted items despite their website homepages spruiking 'sitewide' sales or sales on 'everything'. The discrepancies were found during a sweep the ACCC did of Black Friday sales, the period at the end of November where retailers typically have large discounts. 'Businesses that make false discount claims not only risk misleading consumers, they also compete unfairly against other businesses which correctly state the nature of their sales,' ACCC deputy chair Catriona Lowe said. ACCC analysis shows that while Michael Hill had a prominent banner on its homepage promoting a 'member event' 25 per cent off sitewide sale, some items were not discounted. 'Michael Hill's statement may have misled consumers, and contravened the Australian Consumer Law, because some of the products in its online store were not part of the sale and were not discounted,' Ms Lowe said. Global Retail Brands Australia owns MyHouse, which has 28 physical stores in Australia, plus a range of similar homewares businesses. Splashed across the MyHouse e-store late last year was an ad saying 'everything' was subject to a Black Friday sale with discounts up to 60 per cent. The ad also promised an 'extra' 20 per cent off. 'We say this was misleading because the extra 20 per cent discount was not available on all of its products,' Ms Lowe said. 'Retailers need to ensure that their advertising makes it clear to consumers which products are discounted and by how much.' Hairhouse Online promised 20 to 50 per cent off 'sitewide' for Black Friday sales. More than one-quarter of items on the site were not discounted at all, the ACCC says. The haircare retailer is owned by Melbourne-based The Hairhouse Warehouse. Australians spent about $7bn on the Black Friday sales in 2024. NewsWire has contacted the three companies for comment.

Tech stocks inch up as Meta reportedly nears multibillion-dollar AI investment

The S&P 500 rose 0.55% on Tuesday as tech stocks, including Meta and Google, ticked upward. Tariffs may be leaving a cloud over the stock market, but tech companies continue their upward climb, buoyed by investor excitement around artificial intelligence. On Tuesday, Meta's share price rose 1.20% amid reports that Mark Zuckerberg's social media giant planned to invest around $15 billion into the startup Scale AI. Meta wasn't the only tech company to receive a boost on Tuesday. Apple shares rose 0.61%, despite a lackluster performance at its annual developer conference, while Tesla rebounded 5.67% as the public spat between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump has become more muted. Overall, the S&P 500 rose 0.55%. Despite markets remaining in the green, investors remain cautious as trade talks between the U.S. and China continued in London. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters on Tuesday that discussions with Chinese economic officials were going well. 'We're spending lots of time together,' he said. Meta has retained its status as one of the topmost U.S. tech companies, despite high profile stumbles over the past few years. Those include its disastrous pivot to the metaverse, and its more recent scramble to keep pace in the AI arms race with competitors, including Google and OpenAI. In its latest bid to shore up resources, Meta is building a new 'superintelligence' AI research lab—a term for an AI system that would surpass the collective intelligence of humanity—that will likely be headed by the 28-year-old billionaire founder of Scale AI, Alexandr Wang. According to reports from Bloomberg and The Information, the deal to bring Wang on board would entail an investment into Scale AI totaling around $15 billion. Though the move may not be enough for Meta to compete with other AI labs, the company's stock still ticked up by 1.20%, bringing its monthly gain to 9.85%. Google rose by 1.29% on Tuesday. As for Tesla, despite Tuesday's bump, Tesla has still fallen by 5.55% over the past week. The company is planning to launch its long-anticipated self-driving taxi service in Austin by the end of the month. Another red-hot tech stock, the stablecoin company Circle, maintained most of its massive gains from its initial public offering last week, hovering around $105, though it dropped 8.31% on the day. As Congress inches closer to passing landmark legislation that would establish regulation for stablecoins, a type of dollar-backed cryptocurrency, Circle had the largest two-day pop for an IPO that raised more than $500 million since 1980. Analysts said that Circle's performance could encourage other fintech and crypto companies to go public, with the exchange Gemini announcing that it had confidentially filed for its IPO last week. Nvidia's CEO Is Bullish on the U.K.: Should You be Too?

Like many global markets, the UK economy had a volatile start to the year. After trending upward from early January, gaining around 7.4%, the FTSE 100 reversed course in early March, falling about 13% by early April. However, it has since rebounded, gaining approximately 15%, highlighting renewed investor confidence and a positive shift in the UK's economic outlook. The British economy grew more than expected in first-quarter 2025, largely driven by the services sector. Recent trade agreements with India, the United States, and the EU provide a strong tailwind for the U.K. economy, potentially supporting an upgrade to its growth outlook. With rising uncertainty over tariff policies and growing fears of an economic slowdown, investors have turned their attention away from U.S. assets, another factor driving increased attention toward alternative markets like the U.K. On Monday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed strong admiration for U.K.'s economy, as quoted on CNBC, remarking the economy to be in a goldilocks situation. According to CNBC, Nvidia CEO pledged to ramp up investment in the UK economy's AI industry through his multitrillion-dollar semiconductor company. The U.K. has recently been promoting itself as a future global leader in AI, which can be highlighted by the optimistic comments of the Nvidia CEO. Early in the year, prime minister Keir Starmer introduced an ambitious strategy to strengthen the U.K.'s AI sector, including plans to ease regulations for new data centers and to boost the nation's computing capacity twentyfold by 2030. Huang's comments come as a major boost for the U.K., as he heaped praise on that country's thriving AI ecosystem. While speaking on a panel, as quoted on CNBC, Huang went on to say that the ability to develop AI supercomputers in the U.K. will spark greater interest from startups. Amid global uncertainty, the British economy has demonstrated notable resilience. Further igniting investor interest is British finance minister Rachel Reeves's proposed $2.7 trillion spending plan. Per projections by the IMF, as quoted on Reuters, U.K.'s growth is expected to slightly outpace the Eurozone. However, it will trail behind the United States and Canada. According to Allan Monks, JPMorgan's chief U.K. economist, as quoted on CNBC, a series of positive developments could help lift UK economic growth for the entire second quarter. Investors can increase their portfolio exposure to the U.K. with pure-play ETFs, namely, iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF EWU, Franklin FTSE United Kingdom ETF FLGB, First Trust United Kingdom AlphaDEX Fund FKU and iShares MSCI United Kingdom Small-Cap ETF EWUS. With a one-month average trading volume of about 1.38 million shares, EWU is the most liquid option, offering investors easier entry and exit while minimizing the risk of significant price fluctuations, ideal for active trading strategies. EWU has also gathered an asset base of $3.09 billion, the largest among the other options. Regarding annual fees, FLGB is the cheapest, charging 0.09%, which makes it more suitable for long-term investing. Performance-wise, EWUS was better over the past month, gaining 8.55% and over the past three months, adding 14.62%. Want the latest recommendations from Zacks Investment Research?
