Beach-2 stretch of Tannirbhavi Beach bags Blue Flag tag
The tender process for Beach-2, off Fatima Church, was recently completed and construction firm Northern Sky got the contract.
In-charge Assistant Director of Tourism Dileep said the new agency has been tasked with maintaining the Beach-2 in accordance with Blue Flag beach norms. The ecology on this nearly one-km-long stretch of beach should not be disturbed. It is for the agency to hold water sports and other activities on the stretch, he told The Hindu.
The tender process for Beach-1 is on. As many as four agencies, including Yojaka (India) Private Limited, which maintained both the stretches till January 2025, have applied. Mr. Dileep said the tender would be finalised shortly.
The Union Ministry for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has granted ₹7.59 crore for Beach-2 through its project for the development of Blue Flag beaches. Similarly, Mangaluru Smart City Limited granted ₹7 crore for the development of the beach. Facilities, including restrooms, washrooms, a shop, shacks, and walkways, have been established at the beach, and two shops selling snacks have already been operating at the location.
Charges
The parking fee for visitors' vehicles parked on the Fatima Church Ground is ₹20, and the entry fee for Beach-2 is ₹20 per person. Additionally, a charge of ₹100 per hour applies for using the shacks, and an extra ₹10 is charged for using the washrooms. The ferry ride from Sultan Battery to Fatima Church costs ₹10.

In the Photojournalism section, G.N. Rao, Senior News Photographer, received the 'One Best Image' award for his photo on 'NTR Bharosa'. Senior Special News Photographer K.V.S. Giri won the first prize for his work on bird flu, while Senior Special News Photographer from Telangana, Nagara Gopal, received the Special Achievement Award for his photo on 'Future City'. In the Photo Travel section, Chief News Photographer K.R. Deepak won the 'One Best Image' award for his capture of a Tadoba tiger. The second prize went to The Hindu stringer Kommuri Srinivas for his image of a tricolour procession, while Special News Photographer V. Raju received an award for his work on the Araku tribe.

The declaration, made on Sunday, signals a dramatic shift in how India intends to present Ladakh to the world, not just as a border outpost of strategic importance but as a global destination of natural beauty, heritage, and adventure. Both Siachen and Galwan hold an unparalleled place in modern history. Siachen is known as the world's highest battlefield, where Indian soldiers have braved extreme conditions to defend the nation, while Galwan Valley became a global flashpoint during the India-China clash of 2020. Opening such areas to civilian visitors is being seen as both a bold step and a symbolic gesture of confidence. Gupta, while addressing the gathering, compared Ladakh's scenic charm to some of the world's top destinations. 'Ladakh is no less than Switzerland in any way due to its natural beauty and exciting geography," he said, adding that in the coming years the region would feature among the most sought-after travel hotspots internationally. Reflecting on Ladakh's political journey, Gupta recalled how the region long felt neglected, with locals demanding greater recognition. That changed in 2019 when the Narendra Modi-led government granted Ladakh the status of Union Territory. Since then, Gupta said, both the central administration and local leadership have been focused on modernising infrastructure, boosting road and air connectivity, and promoting eco-friendly tourism models designed to preserve the fragile Himalayan environment. Looking ahead, Gupta insisted that Ladakh's image must evolve beyond narratives of conflict and difficult terrain. Instead, he envisioned it as a showcase of sustainable development, enriched services, cultural depth, and ecological preservation. 'Our vision is to create a sustainable and strong Ladakh, which will attract both the country and the world with its natural beauty, tales of courage and culture," he stated. Observers note that the plan, while promising, will require delicate balancing between opening up sensitive military areas, protecting the environment, and respecting local communities.
