TN seeks retention of in-service quota for super-specialty in Round 2

Chennai: Health Minister Ma Subramanian sought the intervention of Union health minister J P Nadda to ensure that all 50% of seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in Round 2 of state-level NEET super-specialty counselling.

The first round of counselling for admission to super-specialty courses such as cardiology, nephrology, neurology, urology, cardiac, and vascular surgery, conducted by the medical counselling committee under the directorate general of health services (DGHS), ended on May 27.
As per the Supreme Court order, Tamil Nadu reserved 50% of seats in these courses in govt medical colleges of the state exclusively for govt doctors (in-service candidates).
While only 30% of candidates took the seats allotted to them, more than 70% of the 215 seats were vacant, officials said.
While the state does not have adequate candiates qualified to join the course, officials said the Centre must consider in-service candidates if and when they reduce percentile scores in the subsequent rounds.
On May 29, the state selection committee formally requested DGHS to indicate the dates for the second round of counselling to allow the upgradation of seats for in-service candidates.
"However, it has come to our notice that the process of surrendering the unfilled in-service seats to the All-India Quota is being considered, without conducting the mandatory second round of counselling at the state level. Such a move would effectively deprive our in-service candidates of their rightful opportunity to upgrade or participate in further counselling and would be contrary to the spirit and intent of the Supreme Court's order," Subramanian wrote.
He urged Nadda's intervention to ensure that all 50% of seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in Round 2 of counselling.

Male deaths spike in AP's 25-44 age group: CSR data

Visakhapatnam: Days after the Union govt released the 2021 civil registration system (CRS) data, it unveiled the 2022 CRS figures this week. An analysis of CRS datasets spanning the past decade reveals that male deaths in the 15-54-year age group have consistently outnumbered female deaths in AP, with the gap widening over time. In 2015, the male-to-female death ratio was relatively low at approximately 1:07, indicating near parity. By 2022, it increased to about 1:5, with male deaths in certain age groups — particularly 25-34 and 35-44 — more than doubling those of females. While a general excess in male mortality is common across age groups, the magnitude and persistence of this disparity in the working-age population, particularly within the 25-44 bracket, are significantly greater than in other cohorts. This distinct pattern strongly suggests that the underlying causes of mortality during these productive years disproportionately affect males. While there was no significant difference in 2015, a marked shift began in 2016 and continued thereafter. By 2022, males aged 35-44 were dying at a rate 2.52 times that of females, while the 25-34 group recorded a ratio of 2.42. The 15-24 age group also experienced a moderate increase in disparity, rising from 1.07 in 2015 to 1.87 in 2022. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo However, the sharpest divergence was observed among 25-44-year-olds, where male deaths began consistently doubling female deaths. For instance, the 25-34 age group exhibited a male-to-female death ratio exceeding 2:1 from 2017 onwards—approximately 2.1 in 2018, 2.4 in 2021, and 2.42 in 2022—making it one of the most disproportionately affected demographics. This sustained ratio above 2:1 is a significant and alarming trend, indicating that for every female death, more than two males die in this crucial age group. Similarly, the 35–44 age group maintained a consistently high male-to-female death ratio, often exceeding 2:1, with figures around 2.36 in 2018 and 2.52 in 2022. In contrast, the 44-54 age group, while still showing elevated male mortality, had slightly lower ratios—2.01 in 2018, 1.73 in 2021, and 1.88 in 2022. Dr K Rambabu, director of Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences, said that the persistent high male mortality among younger adults, particularly in the 25–34 age group, likely reflects increased trauma cases, suicides, occupational hazards, and external causes such as road accidents. "Early-onset non-communicable diseases further compound male health risks, as cardiovascular and metabolic disorders typically manifest about a decade earlier in men than in women, driving higher mortality in the 35–44 age group. These outcomes are exacerbated by behavioural and systemic factors, including greater risk-taking, lower health-seeking behaviour, and higher dropout rates from primary healthcare, which intensify the burden of otherwise treatable conditions among men," Dr. Rambabu added. General secretary of Praja Arogya Vedika, an association working for the healthcare needs of the public, T Kameshwar Rao urged the state govt to review and analyse the data and investigate the possible causes of the increased male mortality in the middle-aged groups. 'Jumped From Upper Floors To Survive': Locals Recall Ahmedabad Plane Crash Blaze

Ahmedabad: A tragedy unfolded in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon as Air India Flight AI-171, bound for London's Gatwick Airport, crashed 32 seconds after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, prompting the temporary shutdown of all flight operations at the airport. The horror was amplified by stories from survivors and their families. Ramila, a local resident, tearfully recounted how her son narrowly escaped death. "My son had gone to the hostel for lunch. I thought I had lost him. But by God's grace, he jumped from the second floor and survived with only minor injuries," she said. Several eyewitnesses claimed that people jumped from upper floors to escape the fire. Rescue personnel reported that the black box of the aircraft has been recovered and will be crucial in determining the exact cause of the crash. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, took off at 1:38 PM from runway 23. Merely two minutes into the ascent, at around 1.40 p.m., the aircraft lost altitude and crashed into a medical college hostel building in the Meghani Nagar area, sparking a massive fire and widespread panic in the locality. The crash site was engulfed in thick black smoke, visible from kilometers away. Upon receiving news of the crash, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel rushed from Surat to Asarwa Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, where many injured passengers were taken. Expressing sorrow over the incident, CM Patel described the crash as "deeply unfortunate and heartbreaking", and ordered all concerned departments to carry out rescue and relief operations on war footing. The CM also directed the establishment of green corridors for the immediate transfer of the injured to hospitals and ensured that emergency medical arrangements be prioritised across the city's medical facilities. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a telephonic conversation with CM Patel and assured full support by the Central government. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were mobilised immediately and joined local authorities in the ongoing rescue and evacuation efforts. Preliminary reports indicate that a technical malfunction involving tire retraction failure during takeoff may have caused the crash. Sources suggest that after the aircraft's tires failed to retract properly, it collided with a building near the airport. The impact broke the aircraft's tail section into two pieces. The aircraft continued forward and crashed into the Atulyam building, a multi-storey structure housing intern doctors of a nearby medical college. The wing of the aircraft struck the third, fourth, and fifth floors of the hostel, causing extensive structural damage. The building is now at risk of collapse. Dozens of residents were inside at the time of the crash. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport remains closed for all operations until further notice, and flights have been diverted or canceled. This is among India's worst aviation disasters in recent years, with multiple nationalities aboard the aircraft, including British, Portuguese, and Canadian citizens, besides a majority of Indian passengers. In the wake of the crash, the Gujarat government has set up a control room at the State Emergency Operation Centre. Citizens and relatives of passengers can reach the center via phone: 079-232-51900 or mobile: 9978405304. Additionally, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has released two emergency numbers - 6357373831 and 6357373841 - for inquiries related to patient care and trauma center assistance.
