LAKELAND, Fla., June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Researchers at Florida Polytechnic University have developed an artificial intelligence technique that can detect elusive malware known as remote access trojans (RATs) on Android devices. The breakthrough could help protect millions of users from cybercriminals who use RATs to steal personal information and control devices without detection. Nesreen Dalhy B.S. '23, M.S. '25 worked with Dr. Karim Elish, associate professor of computer science at Florida Poly, to identify new, more effective ways to detect this malicious software as part of her master's thesis. "RATs are a significant cybersecurity threat – they are particularly hard to detect, remain persistent and attempt to steal as much of your data as possible," said Dalhy, who has bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from the University. "A lot of the existing research tries to identify general types of malware, but there isn't much that specifically tries to detect RATs." Dalhy, from Davenport, Florida, said RATs have been a problem for years, evolving alongside technology. They continually find new ways to stay hidden in smartphones and steal users' personal information. Androids account for over 80% of the world's mobile devices. "It can silently run in the background of your phone and spy on you without you realizing it," she said. "When you're using an app, you're just seeing whatever is on the screen and not everything that is going on, and that's what RATs take advantage of." It's under this cyber cloak that the malware can take control of an Android device to make calls, send messages, record audio or video, or even encrypt the device's files and demand a ransom. Dalhy and Elish trained a machine learning model to focus only on narrow samples of malware to identify and differentiate specific RAT patterns. By using different threat intelligence databases, they were able to analyze which malware exhibited RAT behavior and use RAT characteristics to highlight more of the smaller samples for detection. Elish, an expert on Android security, said three models they developed detected almost all RATS with 99% accuracy. The next steps for this work will be developing a mobile application based on its results and expanding the research model to detect a broader range of malware families to improve its utility and effectiveness. "Nesreen did amazing work that will have a lot of impact on the community," Elish said. "I am very proud of her work and that we are able to publish this and present it at an important conference." The Nasdaq soared over the past two years, then slipped earlier this year on concerns about the economy. The tech-heavy index has since recovered -- and the artificial intelligence investing theme still remains central to its story. 10 stocks we like better than NASDAQ Composite Index › Over the past couple of years, investors have rushed to get in on the next big thing in technology: artificial intelligence (AI). To do this, they've piled into shares of companies developing or using AI, and this movement has benefited the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC). The benchmark soared 84% from the start of 2023 through the end of last year. But, earlier this year, investor concerns about the impact of President Donald Trump's import tariffs on the economy halted that momentum, and the Nasdaq slid into bear territory. In recent weeks, though, investors have become more optimistic about growth amid certain encouraging signs -- for example, the U.S. reached an initial trade deal with China at lower-then-expected tariff levels. As a result, the Nasdaq has rebounded, erasing this year's losses and trading near its record high. Now, the question is, from here, does the Nasdaq still have room to run? Let's find out. First, let's take a step back and consider the AI movement that drove the Nasdaq gains of the past two years. Companies producing crucial AI development tools, like chip designer Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and networking giant Broadcom, advanced, as did players using these AI products to build out infrastructure -- and here a good example is Meta Platforms, a company that plans as much as $72 billion in capital spending this year. These and other players involved in AI helped the Nasdaq gallop higher, reaching new record highs multiple times. To answer our question regarding the Nasdaq's potential for gains from its current level, it's key to look at two things: the element that could power share momentum and the index's historical performance. We'll start with the possible catalyst. That continues to be AI, and it's joined by another exciting technology: quantum computing, with pure play companies like Rigetti Computing or larger tech giants such as Alphabet developing such programs. Though AI has driven significant gains in corporate revenue and share prices in recent years, we're actually in the early days of this technology's story. Analysts expect the market, at a compound annual growth rate of 30%, to reach more than $2 trillion in less than 10 years. We should keep in mind that the AI buildout is far from over -- and the actual application of AI to real world problems may drive many years of growth for AI companies. Quantum computing, too, is in its early stages, and progress in the field has resulted in gains for the tech companies involved -- and, as a result, the Nasdaq too. This technology involves the use of quantum mechanics to solve problems today's computers are unable to handle. Now, a quick look at what history has to say about the Nasdaq. As you can see in the following chart, the Nasdaq over time always has gone on to reach new highs -- it's never halted at a certain level and remained permanently lower. So, the potential of the AI and quantum computing stories along with the index's historical behavior suggest that, from today's level, it has plenty of room to run. How can you benefit from this? In a couple of different ways. You could select a variety of quality Nasdaq stocks that today trade at a discount compared to their average valuations over the past couple of years. Nvidia, trading at 33 times forward earnings estimates, is a good example -- over most of the past year, it's traded above 40 times these estimates. You also might consider a fund -- such as the Fidelity Nasdaq Composite ETF (NASDAQ: ONEQ) -- that tracks the index's performance. These exchange-traded funds trade daily just like a stock, making it easy to add them to your portfolio. Another option is hand-picking a few Nasdaq stocks and investing in an ETF that tracks the index too, so you can potentially benefit directly from certain players and also gain broad exposure to the entire benchmark. Importantly, no matter which option you choose, get ready to hold on for at least five years. Long-term investing offers companies and indexes time to manage difficult environments and excel during better times -- and that could equal a big investing win for you over the long run as the Nasdaq still has plenty of room to run. Anthropic launches new Claude service for military and intelligence use

Anthropic on Thursday announced Claude Gov, its product designed specifically for U.S. defense and intelligence agencies. The AI models have looser guardrails for government use and are trained to better analyze classified information. The company said the models it's announcing 'are already deployed by agencies at the highest level of U.S. national security,' and that access to those models will be limited to government agencies handling classified information. The company did not confirm how long they had been in use. Claude Gov models are specifically designed to uniquely handle government needs, like threat assessment and intelligence analysis, per Anthropic's blog post. And although the company said they 'underwent the same rigorous safety testing as all of our Claude models,' the models have certain specifications for national security work. For example, they 'refuse less when engaging with classified information' that's fed into them, something consumer-facing Claude is trained to flag and avoid. Claude Gov's models also have greater understanding of documents and context within defense and intelligence, according to Anthropic, and better proficiency in languages and dialects relevant to national security. Use of AI by government agencies has long been scrutinized because of its potential harms and ripple effects for minorities and vulnerable communities. There's been a long list of wrongful arrests across multiple U.S. states due to police use of facial recognition, documented evidence of bias in predictive policing, and discrimination in government algorithms that assess welfare aid. For years, there's also been an industry-wide controversy over large tech companies like Microsoft, Google and Amazon allowing the military — particularly in Israel — to use their AI products, with campaigns and public protests under the No Tech for Apartheid movement. Anthropic's usage policy specifically dictates that any user must 'Not Create or Facilitate the Exchange of Illegal or Highly Regulated Weapons or Goods,' including using Anthropic's products or services to 'produce, modify, design, market, or distribute weapons, explosives, dangerous materials or other systems designed to cause harm to or loss of human life.' At least eleven months ago, the company said it created a set of contractual exceptions to its usage policy that are 'carefully calibrated to enable beneficial uses by carefully selected government agencies.' Certain restrictions — such as disinformation campaigns, the design or use of weapons, the construction of censorship systems, and malicious cyber operations — would remain prohibited. But Anthropic can decide to 'tailor use restrictions to the mission and legal authorities of a government entity,' although it will aim to 'balance enabling beneficial uses of our products and services with mitigating potential harms.' Claude Gov is Anthropic's answer to ChatGPT Gov, OpenAI's product for U.S. government agencies, which it launched in January. It's also part of a broader trend of AI giants and startups alike looking to bolster their businesses with government agencies, especially in an uncertain regulatory landscape. When OpenAI announced ChatGPT Gov, the company said that within the past year, more than 90,000 employees of federal, state, and local governments had used its technology to translate documents, generate summaries, draft policy memos, write code, build applications, and more. Anthropic declined to share numbers or use cases of the same sort, but the company is part of Palantir's FedStart program, a SaaS offering for companies who want to deploy federal government-facing software. Scale AI, the AI giant that provides training data to industry leaders like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta, signed a deal with the Department of Defense in March for a first-of-its-kind AI agent program for U.S. military planning. And since then, it's expanded its business to world governments, recently inking a five-year deal with Qatar to provide automation tools for civil service, healthcare, transportation, and more.
