Fuel price hike ignites opposition fury
The JI leader on Wednesday vowed to hold protest against the government over the hike in prices of petroleum products, electricity, and sugar.
Following the IMF budget, the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices would further open the floodgates for already ballooned inflation, he said. He said that the country would find the right path when an Islamic regime committed to a prosperous and peaceful Pakistan through democratic struggle runs the country.
'Anti-people decision'
Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) has rejected the recent hike in petroleum prices, calling it an anti-people decision. In a statement, the GDA Information Secretary Sardar Abdul Rahim strongly criticized the government for increasing fuel prices by Rs18.54 per litre within just one and a half months. The leader of the anti-PPP alliance said the government, instead of providing relief during difficult times, has pushed the public deeper into the trap of inflation.
The GDA leader accused the coalition government of continuing their extravagant spending and luxuries while burdening people with fuel, electricity, and gas prices. The current regime has made people food insecure he said.
Pakistan Markazi Muslim League Sindh President Faisal Nadeem strongly reacted to the recent hike in petrol prices and the alleged patronage of the sugar mafia by the government. He stated that the increase of Rs5.36 per liter in petrol is an extreme form of injustice against the public. Already burdened by inflation and unemployment, the people are now facing further hardship, which clearly reflects the government's anti-people policies.
Pakistan Sunni Tehreek Central President Sahibzada Allama Bilal Abbas Qadri stated that instead of taking steps to reduce inflation, the rulers are actively contributing to its rise. He noted that whenever petroleum product prices increase, the prices of food and all essential commodities automatically go up.
Wave of inflation
The Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) has strongly criticized the recent hike in petroleum product prices, warning that it could devastate the industry and public. KATI President Junaid Naqi expressed concern over the rise in petrol and diesel prices, saying it will increase production costs and push industries to the brink of collapse.
Naqi warned that if the government doesn't reverse the fuel price hike, industries will shut down, inflation will escalate, and unemployment will rise. He also noted that the hike has increased food prices, making it hard for people to bear daily expenses.
FPCCI Policy Advisory Board Chairman Mian Zahid Hussain, said that the federal government's recent increase in petrol and high-speed diesel prices will trigger another wave of inflation for the general public. He emphasized that the rise in petrol prices will directly impact the middle and lower-income groups who rely on motorcycles, rickshaws, and small vehicles for transportation. Additionally, the hike in diesel prices will lead to increased costs in transportation, agricultural machinery, and essential food items.

He criticized the Sindh government for failing to act, accusing it of focusing on revenue collection through vehicle number plates while ignoring its basic duties. He demanded the government issue number plates free of cost, noting that citizens had already paid for them. He said the administration had lost its writ in Karachi, pointing to poor services, broken infrastructure, and lack of clean water and electricity. He also questioned the Pakistan Peoples Party's claims about building 800,000 houses for flood victims, calling for transparency and urging clarity on the K4 water project's funding shortfall. PTI's Nov 26th protest: ATC rejects petition of accused in hit-and-run case
ISLAMABAD: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Friday rejected a petition filed by the main accused of the hit-and-run case of Rangers personnel during the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI)'s November 26, 2024, protests seeking to halt the trial. The ATC judge, while hearing the case, rejected the petition of the main suspect, Muhammad Hashim Abbasi, who had allegedly run over the Rangers personnel with a vehicle during PTI's November 26 protest, requesting to halt the trial as he [the suspect] is mentally unfit to stand trial. The petition says that the accused, Hashim Abbasi, is mentally unfit; therefore, the trial cannot proceed. However, the prosecutor, Raja Naveed and Jawad Adil, objected to the petition, arguing that no credible evidence had been presented to support the claim of mental illness. According to the court's decision, no official medical history was provided to substantiate Abbasi's claim of mental instability. Instead, a certificate from a private clinic regarding the use of narcotics was submitted, which the court deemed insufficient. The ruling further noted that Abbasi did not cite any medical grounds or ongoing treatment during his bail period. The court consequently dismissed the request and adjourned further proceedings in the case till September 2. The case registered at the Ramna police station under Section 302 (murder), Section 324 (murder attempt) Section 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), Section 114 (abettor present when offence is committed), and other sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, besides 7ATA of Anti-Terrorism Act. PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Omar Ayub, Sheikh Waqas Akram, Salman Akram Raja, Zulfi Bukhari, Hammad Azhar, Raoof Hassan, and other leadership have been nominated in the First Information Report (FIR). The FIR alleged that the PTI founding chairman continuously issued instructions to the party leadership, his wife Bushra Bibi, Gandapur and his sister Aleema Khan for making all-out efforts to get him released from jail and they could set anything on fire or kill anyone for this purpose. Bilawal lauds role of journalist community
KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has lauded the role of Pakistan's journalist community during the recent Pakistan-India conflict, describing them as a national asset. Addressing a ceremony at the Sindh Chief Minister's House marking the 75th anniversary of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), he commended the organisation's long and distinguished struggle for safeguarding freedom of expression and strengthening democracy during periods of authoritarian rule. He recalled a moment during the ARD-led struggle, saying: 'I remember the time when the then-dictator, in his final days in power, began imposing restrictions—even on television channels—and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto stood firmly with you (journalists), side by side.' While appreciating the role of Pakistani journalists during the recent Pakistan-India conflict, he said, 'I want to thank all of you for the way Pakistan's media and journalists countered India's false and disinformation-driven narrative on the global stage—it is truly commendable.' He added, 'I can proudly say that just as Pakistan's Air Force defeated India with a score of 6-0, our journalist community similarly outclassed the Indian media.' Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that prior to the war with India, there were restrictions on digital media, but the conflict made it clear that these platforms are, in fact, national assets. 'We are thankful that the government lifted those restrictions during the war, and to my knowledge, they have not been re-imposed since,' he said. He paid special tribute to Pakistan's Generation Z for their remarkable performance on the digital front during the war against India. Expressing hope, he said the federal government should take note of the journalist community's vital role and reconsider certain policies in recognition of their efforts. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari instructed Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon to continue arranging visits for journalists from other provinces to Sindh, so that accurate information regarding the development initiatives of the PPP's people-centric government could reach the wider public across the country. He pointed out that the Government of Sindh has introduced revolutionary measures in various public service sectors, including healthcare. He further highlighted that the project for the reconstruction of 2.1 million houses for the 2022 flood-affected population is the largest of its kind in the world. While speaking about Balochistan, he said that the province's issues and challenges are historical in nature and can only be resolved through substantial investment and dedicated efforts. He urged Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif to pay special attention and take concrete steps to accelerate the development process in Balochistan. He also called upon the journalist community to visit Balochistan and witness firsthand the challenges faced by the provincial government. Furthermore, he appreciated the Balochistan government's scholarship program for students under the leadership of Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti. Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugtti, and other dignitaries also addressed the ceremony.
