Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday launched Muthalvarin Kaakkum Karangal (CM's Protective Hands) scheme to support livelihood of ex-servicemen and also handed over appointment orders to newly recruited assistant engineers in highways department.
At the Secretariat, Stalin handed over sanction orders to 15 ex-servicemen, marking the rollout of assistance to 155 veterans to start businesses. The scheme, announced in his 2024 Independence Day address, has an outlay of 24.43crore. In its first phase, 348 ex-servicemen and their families will benefit, with a total cost of 50.5crore.
Under the scheme, veterans can avail bank loans up to 1crore with 30% capital subsidy and 3% interest subsidy.
Applications will be screened by district-level committees headed by collectors. Based on their approval, banks will issue provisional sanction orders. Beneficiaries will undergo entrepreneurship training at state's Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute in Chennai, after which final loan sanction will be given.
The scheme will later be scaled up to benefit 500 more veterans. State govt currently provides a range of welfare measures for ex-servicemen, including stipend support for children, ex-gratia jobs for dependents of those killed in action, re-employment assistance, and educational reservations.
The new scheme, officials said, is intended to ensure sustainable livelihoods for veterans who dedicated their youth to military service.

Officials said highways play a crucial role in economic growth, and govt has been investing in strengthening infrastructure while filling vacancies to ensure smooth execution of projects.
Since May 2021, the department has recruited 1,016 personnel through direct recruitment and compassionate grounds.

'Undermines democracy': Stalin criticises Centre over 130th Constitution Amendment bill

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Central government over the introduction of the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, warning that the legislation, if passed, would undermine democracy and empower the Centre to arbitrarily unseat opposition Chief Ministers. In a post on X, Stalin accused the BJP government of attempting to 'defile' the Constitution and described the proposed amendment as a 'Black Day' in Indian democracy. 'The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform. This is a Black Day and this is a Black Bill. Thirty-day arrest equals removal of an elected CM. No trial, no conviction – just BJP's diktat. This is how dictatorships begin: Steal votes, silence rivals and crush states,' he wrote. The Chief Minister alleged that the move was a diversionary tactic by the BJP, which is facing allegations of 'vote theft.' He claimed that after being accused of forming the government through fraudulent means, the party is desperate to divert public attention. 'Having stolen the mandate of the people through fraud, the BJP is now desperate to distract public attention from this expose. To do that, they have brought in the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill,' Stalin said. Expressing confidence that the judiciary would intervene, Stalin said the bill would not withstand judicial scrutiny. 'This unconstitutional amendment will certainly be struck down by the courts because guilt is decided only after trial, not by mere registration of a case,' he asserted. He further charged that the proposed amendment is aimed at intimidating regional allies within the NDA. 'This is a sinister attempt to intimidate regional parties in the NDA, whose leaders are CMs or Ministers in various States – 'stick with us or else.' The first move of any emerging dictator is to give himself the power to arrest and remove rivals from office. That is exactly what this Bill seeks to do,' Stalin added. The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, along with the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament. The amendment proposes that the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers detained for 30 consecutive days on charges of corruption or serious offences could be removed from office.

Bihar moving towards $1.1 trillion economy due to infra devpt in last 2 decades: Minister

Patna: The infrastructure and other development in Bihar in the last two decades under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar has led the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) predict more than double the growth in the state, which will have a $219-billion economy by 2030-31, state industries minister Nitish Mishra said on Wednesday. The CII released the report on Tuesday. "The CII estimates Bihar's economy to more than double by 2030-31 and reach $219-billion levels (the optimistic scenario). Over a longer horizon, the economy is expected to reach the size of $1.1 trillion by 2046-47," said the report titled 'Bihar: A US$1-trillion Economy', released at the 4th CII East India Summit in Mumbai. Expressing happiness on the CII vision document, Mishra said this document will become a guide for the all-round industrial and economic development of Bihar. "We are seen as a struggling and poor state, compared to the developed ones. But if we see the state's journey in the last two decades, Bihar has everything now, like a good infrastructure and governance model, which are the prerequisites for the industries to invest anywhere. We have already signed MoUs worth Rs1.81 lakh crore. The CM's announcement on Independence Day regarding the industrial incentives and policy will bring more investments to Bihar," Mishra said, adding the state can be seen as becoming the most attractive destination for investors, not only within the country but also globally, in the coming years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He added India is the fourth largest economy in the world today and is moving towards $5 trillion. "In this sequence, Bihar is also moving forward and will contribute to the nation's development. This is not a dream, but a goal to be realized with our policies, plans and the energy of the youth. The biggest strength of Bihar is its youth. The new generation of the state will take Bihar to new heights of development with its energy, talent and innovation. Industrial investment, skill development, infrastructure strengthening and entrepreneurship will get a new direction through this vision document," he hoped.
