Unit tests likely to be discontinued in Gujarat schools
Ahmedabad: The state education department recently held a meeting with a sub-committee to discuss reforms in the
student evaluation process
. The discussions leaned toward discontinuing the currently implemented unit tests. However, debates are ongoing about what new evaluation method should replace the existing one.
Sources indicate that a report aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is being prepared, and the sub-committee is expected to submit it by the end of May. Based on this report, a new evaluation system may be introduced from the upcoming academic session.
Currently, unit tests are conducted every Saturday for students from Classes 3 to 12 as part of continuous assessment. However, mounting opposition and criticism regarding the effectiveness and pressure of these tests prompted the govt to reconsider the system.
Following a meeting chaired by the state education minister at the Vidya Samiksha Kendra, a circular was issued by the Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) to form a 12-member committee focused on implementing a
360-degree evaluation
approach for students, as per NEP-2020.

The committee is gathering inputs from various educational organisations and representatives. Separate sub-committees have been created for different educational levels, from foundational courses to secondary and higher secondary education. Their findings will be consolidated into a comprehensive report.
Recently, a key meeting was held in Bhavnagar where the sub-committee discussed the framework of the new evaluation system. It has been recommended that the existing unit test model be scrapped and replaced by a new, more holistic method. Final recommendations are expected soon, after which the govt will decide on implementing changes in the assessment process.
