Midway ISD Communications Team recognized at TSPRA State Star Awards

Yahoo26-02-2025

HEWITT, Texas (FOX 44) – The Midway Independent School District's Communications Team has been recognized among the best in Texas!
The team earned multiple top awards at the Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA) State Star Awards for the 2023-24 school year. The team brought home six Gold awards, including four Best of Category honors, celebrating excellence in school communications.
According to the district, the team was recognized for outstanding creativity and strategy across a variety of communications efforts:
Gold & Best of Category – Holiday/Greeting Card
Gold & Best of Category – Communication Plan (Crisis Communication)
Gold & Best of Category – Website – Original Design (Eclipse 2024)
Gold & Best of Category – Logo, Trademark, Symbol (Midway ISD PD logo)
Gold – Published News or Feature
Gold – Published Print Ad
Midway ISD says its success is particularly impressive given the size of the district compared to other top winners. Despite serving just 8,800 students, the district earned four Best of Category awards—matching the total number of awards won by much larger districts like Killeen ISD (44,000 students), Richardson ISD (39,000 students), San Antonio ISD (45,000 students), and Socorro ISD (47,000 students). The only district to surpass Midway ISD in Best of Category wins was Cy-Fair ISD (118,000 students)—one of the largest school districts in Texas.
The district says the TSPRA Star Awards recognize outstanding school communication efforts across Texas. Entries are divided into three divisions based on the number of students served – under 15,000 students; 15,000 to 40,000 students; and over 40,000 students. Independent judges evaluate and score each entry based on its own merit. Bronze, Silver and Gold Stars are awarded based on set criteria. Finally, the judges review their highest scoring Gold Star winners and select a Best of Category for each division.
Congratulations to the Midway ISD Communications Team—Emily Parks, Robert Pryor, and Katy Durham—for setting the standards high and leading the way in school PR excellence!

Elkins celebrates assembly of Gold Star Families memorial monument with a parade

ELKINS, (WBOY) — Before his death, veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Hershel 'Woody' Williams believed that no one should have to drive more than an hour to reach a Gold Star monument, and one of his last wishes was to expand the network of Gold Star monuments across West Virginia. With the help of a few patriots, Woody Williams' wish is being fulfilled in Elkins, as the city welcomed its Gold Star monument with a parade and warm embrace on Tuesday. 12 News spoke with Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco on why the city chose to honor military families in this way. 'We respect our veterans completely and we want to showcase that at any chance we can, and this is for those families out there who have lost family members that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, that have an empty place setting at the table, we want them to know that we haven't forgotten them and the sacrifices their families have made,' Marco said. Marco said that he hopes to create a veteran's park at the intersection of Harrison and Railroad Avenues. A groundbreaking ceremony will also be held next Monday for a life-size Rosie the Riveter statue in the same location. West Virginia Rhododendron Girls State returns to Davis & Elkins College But as for the Gold Star monument, its establishment was a joint effort between the Elkins Rotary Club, the city of Elkins, local veterans, patriots, and Dan McCarthy, who was the governor of the rotary district when Woody Williams passed away. 12 News also spoke to McCarthy on the importance of this monument. 'This is all about honoring those families that have lost someone in service to our country, and being a veteran, I'm probably as sensitive as anyone to the importance of recognizing those families. And we often talk about the veterans, but the families sacrifice as much as the veterans do in a different way. And sometimes, unless you've been a veteran, you don't realize how much the families sacrifice,' McCarthy said. The city of Elkins will host an unveiling for the Gold Star monument at 11 a.m. on July 5, after hosting its first-ever 4th of July parade the day before, both of which are open to the public. Sprinkles of History: The Sweet Story Behind National Donut Day

Waco, TX (FOX 44) — It's more than free treats! We celebrate with sprinkles, history, and sweet deals across the country. National Donut Day was started in 1938 by Chicago's Salvation Army in order to honor the Donut Lassies that began serving during World War One. 'They served the men on the front line that were nervous, are scared about their days, and they brought them rations and spiritual advice,' Salvation Army Volunteer Special Events and PR Coordinator Sarah Femister said. 'Then by the end of it, there was nothing left but to make donuts. And they even fried them in the helmets, or anything they could find.' The reason behind using donuts was because they were cheap and a common comfort food. 'It was something sweet that could remind the men of home and hope and everything was going to be all right,' Femister said This year, donut shops are making sweet deals for National Donut Day. 'We released two new seasonal flavors – is going to be our Fruity Pebbles and our Lemonade,' Nightlight Donuts and Coffee General Manager Patricia Sidbury said. 'It's been pretty popular today, and we're offering 20 percent off of all donuts today, as well.' 'Everybody gets a free donut today, and with a free beverage,' Dunkin employees Amya Harper and Kimberly Starts said. The Salvation Army partnered up with local donut stores for National Donut Day to make everyone's day a little sweeter. 'This year we were lucky enough to partner with H-E-B here in town….and a few of our Shipley's to help us get donuts and donut holes to all of our first responders and community partners around Waco,' Feimster said. If you're taking advantage of the donut deals today, make sure to thank the Donut Lassies that inspired the holiday. The donut remains a lasting symbol of the Salvation Army's comforting support of our soldiers during both World Wars. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
