Chelsea agree transfer deal to sell forgotten defender after just 12 months

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sell Renato Veiga to Villarreal, according to reports. Veiga joined Chelsea on a seven-year contract from FC Basel just 12 months ago, for a fee thought to be in the region of £12million. But the versatile defender failed to secure regular playing time under Enzo Maresca and was sent on loan to Serie A giants Juventus in January, where he went on to make 15 appearances in all competitions. Though Veiga did his reputation no harm with a string of assured displays at the heart of Juve's defence, he returned to Stamford Bridge from Turin with his immediate future up in the air earlier this summer. The Blues made it clear they would be unable to guarantee the 22-year-old a regular starting role for the 2025/26 campaign, prompting his camp to begin sounding out potential suitors around Europe. Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan have all been credited with an interest, but Villarreal have asserted themselves as the overwhelming favourites to land the Portugal international – who is comfortable operating at both centre-back and in central midfield. According to Fabrizio Romano, Villarreal's discussions have advanced at a pace in recent days and the La Liga outfit have now struck a deal with both Veiga's camp and Chelsea over a €29.5million (£25.5m) package, including add-ons. It's claimed the deal will include a 'heavy' sell-on clause, with Chelsea set to retain a significant percentage of any future transfer fee should the player be sold on again. The move would see Veiga become Villarreal's club-record signing, surpassing Arnaut Danjuma's €23.5m (£20.4m) switch from Bournemouth four years ago. There had still been six years remaining on Veiga's contract at Stamford Bridge, which he signed upon arrival from Basel. There was no place for Veiga on the substitutes bench as Chelsea were held to a goalless draw in their opening match of the Premier League season with Crystal Palace. It was only last October that Maresca singled Veiga out for special praise after handing the defender a rare start in Chelsea's Europa Conference League defeat of Panathinaikos. More Trending 'I just said to Renato, he has played already as a centre-back, a full-back, holding midfielder, attacking midfielder,' Maresca told reporters at the time. 'He has already played four or five positions. One of my first press conferences, I said that the reason why I really like and love Chelsea is because many players can be versatile. 'Today, in my idea, if they can play different positions, then it is better for the team and especially for the players. Today, if you just play one position, I don't think it's enough. 'You need to learn more positions. Renato, Malo [Gusto], they are playing in different positions and they are doing well.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey joins Roma on loan with option to buy as out-of-favour Jamaica star looks to revive form in Serie A

Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey has joined Roma on loan for the 2025-26 season, with the Jamaica international looking to revive his form in Serie A. The deal reportedly includes a £19million option to make the move permanent. Roma, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini, finished fifth in Serie A last season and have already added Brighton striker Evan Ferguson to their squad this summer. Bailey, 28, joined Villa from Bayer Leverkusen in a £25m deal in 2021 and has since made 144 appearances, scoring 22 goals. He was a regular starter under Unai Emery in his first two seasons, but injuries and form limited his minutes in the latter stages of last year. Bailey enjoyed his best season in 2023-24, hitting a career-high 14 goals and 13 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions. Last term, as Villa reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, he scored and assisted in the last-16 win over Club Brugge before Emery's side were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain. But it proved to be a rare highlight in an otherwise disappointing campaign that saw him register only two goals in 38 games and slip down the pecking order as Villa reinforced their attack. The winger signed a new contract in February 2024 running until 2027, but the option-to-buy clause in his Roma loan means this season could prove decisive in shaping his long-term future. Bailey's switch also continues a busy summer of outgoings at Villa Park, with midfielder Leander Dendoncker joining Real Oviedo and reports linking other squad players with exits before the deadline. Roma will hope Bailey can rediscover the spark that made him such a threat in the Bundesliga.

Rasmus Hojlund makes decision over transfer as Man Utd receive new approach

Rasmus Hojlund is pushing for a permanent transfer with Napoli holding talks to sign the Manchester United striker, according to reports in Italy. Antonio Conte's side have joined the race to sign Hojlund as Romelu Lukaku now faces several weeks on the sidelines due to a thigh injury. Sky Sport Italy reports that Napoli have made an approach to United over a deal for the Denmark international. The report adds that Hojlund's preference is to return to Serie A on a permanent basis rather than join a club on loan with an option to buy. AC Milan had held extensive talks to sign Hojlund from United this summer but the Serie A side are now on the verge of reaching an agreement to sign Victor Boniface on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, which includes an option to buy for €30 million (£25.9m). United's decision to sign Benjamin Sesko in a £73.7m deal from RB Leipzig could signal the end of Hojlund's time at Old Trafford. Hojlund, who was signed in a £72m deal from Atalanta two years ago, was left out of United's squad for their Premier League opener against Arsenal last Sunday. Speaking about his decision to omit Hojlund from his squad for the 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal, Amorim said: 'It is a fight for places. Sky Sports is going full throttle this Premier League season, airing a record-breaking 215 live matches - that's nearly double the usual dose of drama, goals, and post-match meltdowns. From Friday night clashes to Super Sundays and even all ten final-day fixtures, Sky's new deal means fans won't miss a single nutmeg or last-minute screamer. Whether you're team Sky Q, Sky Glass, or prefer streaming via NOW, you're covered. And with pundits like Jamie Carragher probably already rehearsing their 'I told you so' lines, expect top-tier commentary alongside top-tier football. As Pep might say, 'More games, more problems - for the other teams.' Check out the latest deals from Sky here, starting from £15 a month. 'We'll see what is going to happen in the market. There are different characteristics. Rasmus has the same characteristics of Benjamin Sesko, so we need to choose.' Hojlund, meanwhile, has publicly maintained that he wants to remain at United in order to compete for his place alongside Sesko. More Trending 'I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. I'm still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I'm only 22,' Hojlund said during United's pre-season campaign earlier this month. 'Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22. But I've learned a lot, I think you can see in my game. I'm starting to develop and become even better in the basics. 'Now it's just about for me to sharpen myself and I've done very well in the pre-season so far. Just focusing on continuing that. 'Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp, so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
