The Royal Stables Abu Dhabi to develop UAE Para Dressage team for LA Paralympic Games
The Royal Stables in Abu Dhabi announced the launch of a ground breaking initiative aimed at developing a competitive para dressage team to represent the UAE at the upcoming Los Angeles Paralympic Games in 2028.
The Para Dressage Performance Programme underscores The Royal Stables' commitment to promoting inclusivity and excellence, following the founding vision of His Highness the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
With a mission to empower para-athletes and inspire future generations, The Royal Stables is actively seeking potential Emirati athletes to join the development pathway, sponsorship partners and community support to bring this ambitious vision to life. This project is a unique opportunity to be part of a historic journey toward the Paralympic Games, championing diversity and breaking barriers in equestrian sports.
An International Equestrian Federation (FEI) governed discipline, Para Dressage is conducted under the same basic rules as the sport of Dressage, the highest expression of horse training, adjusted for athletes of determination. Athletes perform at a walk, trot and canter, executing tests ridden from memory that follow a prescribed pattern of movements, with the test difficulty determined by the athlete's graded level of impairment.
Athletes are graded according to the severity of the impairment, ranging from Grade I—most severe impairments that usually require the use of a wheelchair—up to Grade V, which is classified as a mild impairment of movement or muscle strength or visual impairment.
Para Dressage is the only Equestrian discipline included in the Paralympic Games, where it has been a regular fixture since 1996. The Paralympic Games are the second largest sporting event in the world after the Olympic Games and are contested immediately after the Olympic Games in the same city and at the same venue.
The Royal Stables has assembled a team of distinguished experts to manage this project, spearheaded by Performance Manager Laura Richardson, bringing her extensive experience in elite sports management to optimise athlete development and competitive success; and Russell Mackechnie-Guire as the Technical Lead, whose PhD in equine biomechanics and vast expertise will provide a scientific edge to training and performance strategies.
Other pivotal players include Mohamed Dahdouh as the Team Physiotherapist, focusing on injury prevention, rehabilitation and enhancing athlete mobility and strength; and Krish Someshwar as the Team Veterinarian, ensuring the highest standard of equine health and welfare.
As part of this innovative development program, The Royal Stables has also acquired a Racewood Simulator, a cutting-edge equestrian training tool that provides a safe and controlled environment for athletes to hone their skills. The simulator will play a vital role in the para dressage team's training, offering customised data and feedback and enhancing rider confidence and technique. Additionally, the Racewood Simulator will be available for bookings outside of the para programme, making this advanced technology accessible to the wider equestrian community.

Kalba and Khorfakkan clubs win junior and cadet championships
17 Competitions The championship included 17 competitions for national athletes in the sprint, jump, and throw categories. Kalba topped the junior category with six medals, followed by Sharjah in second place with four medals, and Al Hamriyah in third place with three medals. NBA: Gregg Popovich steps down as San Antonio Spurs coach after 29 seasons
Los Angeles: San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is stepping down after 29 seasons, the team announced Friday, ending a glittering NBA coaching career that included five championships and a record 1,422 wins. Popovich, 76, a beloved figure across the sport who was sidelined for most of this regular season after suffering a mild stroke last November, will take on a new role as president of basketball operations, the Spurs said. "While my love and passion for the game remain, I've decided it's time to step away as head coach," Popovich said in a statement released by San Antonio. "I'm forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me," the Hall-of-Famer added. Popovich joined San Antonio as an assistant coach in 1988 and has spent 37 years in the league as a coach and executive. Apart from two seasons as an assistant coach at the Golden State Warriors, the entirety of Popovich's career has been spent in San Antonio. Popovich, who was the longest-tenured head coach in any major sports league in the United States prior to Friday's announcement, also led the United States to a gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "Coach Pop's extraordinary impact on our family, San Antonio, the Spurs and the game of basketball is profound," Spurs managing partner Peter J. Holt said in a statement. "His accolades and awards don't do justice to the impact he has had on so many people. "He is truly one-of-one as a person, leader and coach. Our entire family, alongside fans from across the globe, are grateful for his remarkable 29-year run as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs." Speculation about Popovich's ability to continue in his role as Spurs head coach has swirled since he suffered a mild stroke in November which left him unable to coach the team for the majority of the season. That sense of uncertainty was heightened last month after he was reportedly hospitalised following a "medical incident" at a restaurant with what was described as a non-life-threatening injury or illness. 'Generational leader' Popovich had already announced in February that he would play no part in the remainder of the Spurs' season, saying he planned to concentrate on his health "with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future." In a coaching career that spanned five decades, Popovich forged a reputation as one of the sharpest minds in basketball, a man-manager par excellence who mixed compassion for his players with a willingness to speak his mind. "Players believed Pop cared about them individually before he cared about them as basketball players," former Spurs player Terry Porter told The Athletic. "It was never just about basketball for Pop. He values family - your kids, your wife - and that helps with the buy-in, the trust."
