Paris Saint-Germain get back on the hunt for trophies in the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham on Wednesday.
It's the annual early-season match between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League — and PSG starts as the big favorite.
Coming off winning the treble, including the Champions League for the first time, the Qatari-backed team from the French capital will look to bounce back from losing to Chelsea in the final of the Club World Cup in the United States.
Facing them at Stadio Friuli in Udine is another London club in Tottenham, which ended a 17-year wait for silverware by winning the Europa League by beating Manchester United in the final.
Spurs have a new manager in Thomas Frank but also some big absentees, with attacking midfielders James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski injured and long-time star Son Heung-min recently sold to LAFC.
It is Tottenham's first appearance in the Super Cup. PSG has played in it once, losing 9-2 on aggregate to Juventus over two legs in 1996.
PSG's players have just returned to training after the Club World Cup, which extended last season to mid-July. Tottenham should be more match-sharp, having played a raft of friendlies including against Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

Premier League chief calls for patience as Man City legal case drags on

by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 August 2025, 15:55 The Premier League's top official called for patience Wednesday while the seismic legal case involving Manchester City drags on into another season. City was charged by the league in February 2023 with more than 100 financial breaches, including providing misleading information about its sources of income. The case was heard by an independent commission between September and December last year but no verdict has been reached. Punishment could be as extreme as expulsion from the top flight. City has always denied the charges. The issue hangs over the start of another Premier League campaign, with the 2025-26 season starting Friday. But Richard Masters, the competition's chief executive, reiterated the league has no control or say over the timings. Asked in an interview with British broadcaster Sky Sports News why the league could not hurry the process along, Masters said: "I can't answer that specific question. All I can tell you about is the system and how it works. "I mean, it's an independent judiciary, essentially. So once the allegations, the charge, has been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected, and they are then in charge of the process and its timings. They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that, over it or its timing. That's right from an independence point of view." Masters said "my frustration is irrelevant." "I just have to wait," he said, "and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient." Taking the Premier League abroad The Spanish league has recently approved a request for a match, between Villarreal and Barcelona, to be played in the United States in December and Masters was asked whether the Premier League had any similar desire to take a game abroad. Masters said the need has lessened. "We did look at the '39th game' way back when, with lots of controversy. I recall that very clearly," Masters said of a controversial proposal made back in 2008 of having an extra round of matches played overseas. "Our objective at the time, when thinking about it, was to help grow the Premier League around the world. "And we've been able to do that through different means, through brilliant broadcast partnerships, through digital technology, investing in other areas, like the Summer Series tournament we've just had in the U.S., and now the Premier League is a genuinely global league. There are billions of people who will be tuning in over the course of the next next nine months to watch Premier League action. So we've achieved that objective by different means, that necessity has dissipated."

Champions League winner PSG may find it harder to defend the French title

by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 August 2025, 15:53 Paris Saint-Germain lost only twice in Ligue 1 last season and benefited from a lack of domestic rivalry to also embark on a victorious Champions League campaign. This French season might be more difficult for coach Luis Enrique and PSG. Marseille and Monaco are determined to mount credible title challenges after strong summer signings. PSG passed its first competitive test of the new season when it won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday against Tottenham, and has a long-awaited local derby against newly promoted Paris FC to come. Get ready for PSG vs. PFC. But first, the season begins with Marseille at Rennes on Friday. Monaco is at home to Le Havre on Saturday and PSG is at Nantes on Sunday. Here's a look at the upcoming season: Intercity rivalry For the first time in 35 years two Paris-based soccer clubs are in Ligue 1. Paris FC's takeover by France's richest family, the Arnaults of luxury empire LVMH, also got a minority stake from energy drink giant Red Bull. It gives PSG fans a genuine city rivalry against a very close neighbor. PFC changed stadiums following its promotion and will play at the 20,000-seat Stade Jean-Bouin — right across the street from PSG's Parc des Princes. PFC owner Antoine Arnault, the son of billionaire Bernard Arnault, used to be a PSG season-ticket holder. "I've loved PSG since I was 12," Antoine Arnault said. "You will never hear me say anything negative about PSG." Parc des Princes hosts the first meeting on Jan. 4. PFC hosts the second on May 16 in the final round. Marseille offense Coach Roberto De Zerbi has been proactive with his signings but his best move was keeping hold of influential midfielder Adrien Rabiot. Marseille bolstered its attack by signing highly rated Brazilian winger Igor Paixão in a deal that could rise to 35 million euros ($40.6 million). Veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored 30 goals for Marseille two seasons ago, has returned. Attacking midfielder Angel Gomes joined from Lille and U.S. winger Tim Weah arrived from Juventus. They supplement an attack already featuring Mason Greenwood, who scored 21 league goals last season, and skilful finisher Amine Gouiri. But the team's heartbeat is Rabiot. He was Marseille's best player last season following a surprise move from Juventus, and the 53-cap France international said he turned down offers to move during the offseason. "I couldn't see myself leaving when I think the best is ahead of us," Rabiot told Le Provence newspaper. "We've put something into place with the coach and I want to be part of what's ahead." Monaco's challenge Monaco started last season strongly but faded badly due to poor defending and erratic goalkeeping. Coach Adi Hütter is determined to correct that and the Principality club has recruited veteran goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecky from Bayer Leverkusen. Paul Pogba has also joined, along with Ansu Fati. Pogba was once among the world's best midfielders, and he's trying to reignite a career derailed by injuries and a doping ban. Fati was once considered among the world's best young players in the way Lamine Yamal is now. The tricky winger has joined on a season-long loan from Barcelona, offering the former teen prodigy another chance to resurrect his career. With the prolific Mika Biereth in attack alongside forward Folarin Balogun, and with Eliesse Ben Seghir and Maghnes Akliouche supporting them from midfield, the goals should flow for Monaco. Veterans return As well as Pogba, there will be plenty of interest in how Olivier Giroud and Florian Thauvin fare. All three won the 2018 World Cup with France, although Thauvin was a fringe player. The 38-year-old Giroud — France's all-time record scorer with 57 goals — has joined Lille after leaving Los Angeles FC. After winning Ligue 1 with Montpellier in 2012, Giroud joined Arsenal then won the Champions League with Chelsea and the Italian league with AC Milan. Thauvin has joined Lens from Serie A club Udinese. He played the best soccer of his career for Marseille, scoring 53 league goals across three seasons from 2016-19. PSG's goalkeeper uncertainty Gianluigi Donnarumma was arguably PSG's best player during its stellar Champions League run. But he reportedly wants to leave after the club signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille. Donnarumma's future at PSG is in doubt after he was dropped from the squad for the UEFA Super Cup win against Tottenham. Promoted clubs Metz and Lorient went up with PFC. Lorient won Ligue 2 thanks to striker Eli Junior Kroupi's 22 goals. Metz has Jonathan Fischer, a former substitute teacher, in goal.

Thomas Müller jokes he's missing Manuel Neuer as Vancouver adventure begins

by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 August 2025, 15:55 Thomas Müller has a lot to adapt to with the Vancouver Whitecaps after 25 years at Bayern Munich. First up, flying without an old friend. Aboard the plane taking him to Canada and Major League Soccer, Müller joked it was the first time in 15 years he'd flown without Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper who's been his longtime teammate for Bayern and the German national team. "I'm on my flight to Vancouver. I'm looking for the GOAT. Can you help me? I cannot find him anywhere," Müller said in a video on Instagram. "It's my first flight without Manuel Neuer since maybe 15 years, I don't know. I'm very excited to come to Vancouver to play for the Whitecaps. Fingers crossed for my first games. See you there." The 35-year-old forward admitted to feeling "a little bit nervous" in comments to German broadcaster Sky Sport. "It's the first time in a very long time that I'm joining a new team." Müller joined Bayern's academy as a 10-year-old in 2000 and had spent his entire career with the German champion, winning a record 13 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues and the World Cup with Germany in 2014. At Vancouver International Airport, fans cheered as waved flags as Müller walked through sliding doors after clearing customs. He then joined fans at an airport restaurant to watch the Whitecaps face Canadian Premier League club Forge FC in the first leg of the Canadian Championship semifinals. Müller's last game for Bayern was a quarterfinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup in Atlanta, after a months-long farewell from the club. Bayern announced in April it wouldn't be extending his contract. Müller said he understood "even if this did not reflect my personal wishes." The following weeks saw emotional scenes with teammates, club officials and fans as Müller hit personal milestones — passing his 500th Bundesliga game and 750th game in total for Bayern — and wrapped up yet another German title. Vancouver said last week Müller will join the Whitecaps for the remainder of the season in an open roster spot, with a Designated Player option for 2026.
