BlackRock could pour ₹500 cr into Bira91's promoter group

Economic Times18-05-2025
American asset management fund BlackRock is in advanced talks to invest '500 crore in the promoter group of B9 Beverages, maker of Bira91 craft beers, through structured debt, according to multiple people directly aware of the negotiations.
ADVERTISEMENT The funds-to be infused in holding companies controlled by B9 Beverages promoter Ankur Jain-will be used to acquire early shareholders such as Peak XV Partners and Sofina's holdings and to infuse new capital into B9 Beverages, one of the executives said.
The development comes amid liquidity woes, losses and supply disruptions, which the company has attributed to its name change that triggered a regulatory hurdle and led to inventory losses. The company reported '748-crore net loss in FY24 while its revenue declined to '638 crore from '927 crore in FY23. Its volume sales fell to 6-7 million cases in FY24 from 9 million cases in the previous fiscal.
Besides '500-crore debt from BlackRock, B9 is also launching a '100-crore rights issue on May 22, which is expected to close in June, one of the executives cited above said. "B9 and its founders are in the process of raising $100 million in aggregate from a set of investors and family offices," Jain told ET in an email reply. "The capital will be infused as primary capital in the company and part of it would be deployed by the founders to buy out early-stage investors."

ADVERTISEMENT The world's largest asset manager owns an equity stake of a little under 8% in Molson Coors, the world's fourth largest brewer that owns popular American beer brands Miller Lite, Coors Lite and Blue Moon Belgian White. It also owns a stake in Treasury Wine Estates, a prominent Australian wine company that owns 70 brands which are marketed globally."B9 Beverages has a term sheet for about $100 million to be split into two tranches. So, some part of the funds could come in the first tranche and the remainder in the second tranche," said one of the executives cited above. "There's a plan to restructure some of the obligations and make the company operationally more efficient."
ADVERTISEMENT B9 has created a long-term brand with Bira at a time when it's difficult to build a national beer brand. "So, that's the conviction investors have behind backing the company," he said.
BlackRock's funding is expected to be in the form of a debt instrument with a back-ended coupon to incentivise the borrower to meet certain conditions, such as operational targets of revenue and Ebitda goals of B9 Beverages.

US tariff impact: S&P says India's long-term growth story intact; cites reforms and robust domestic demand

S&P Global Ratings on Tuesday said that high US tariffs are unlikely to derail India's long-term growth prospects, citing the government's focus on reforms, infrastructure investment and improving living standards. The ratings agency, which recently upgraded India's sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' with a stable outlook after 18 years, pointed to strong economic fundamentals and fiscal discipline as key drivers, PTI reported. 'Going forward, we expect this growth dynamics will continue to play out over 3 years with growth averaging about 6.8 per cent. If infrastructure and connectivity improve in India, it will remove bottlenecks that are hindering long-term economic growth and bring India's potential growth path even higher,' S&P Global Ratings Director YeeFarn Phua said. India, Phua added, remains one of the strongest and best-performing economies globally. 'Over the past 3-4 years, India has been an outperformer in growth compared to regional peers,' he said at a webinar on India's rating upgrade. On the specific impact of higher tariffs, S&P Asia Pacific Economist Vishrut Rana said India's economy is largely sheltered due to its domestic orientation. 'India's economy is relatively less trade-oriented, with external demand contributing only 15 per cent of the overall economy and 85 per cent driven by domestic factors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo So it is a very heavily domestically oriented economy. That is one element of shelter,' Rana said. He noted that mitigating factors, such as exemptions for some sectors and limited exposure to the US, would cushion the blow. 'It is a complicated environment. There are several mitigating factors which are likely to cushion the overall impact on the economy. Still, we could see some short-term confidence effects on the economy. Medium term, the structural factors — favourable growth path, infrastructure and continued favourable business environment — will determine the growth path,' Rana said. The US has already imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods effective August 7, with an additional 25 per cent duty scheduled from August 27, taking the total to 50 per cent. Phua stressed that India is staying on course with reforms despite external disruptions. 'These external developments (like high tariffs) can sometimes create some noise but by and large, this government is staying on course and trying to improve the standard of living for its people,' he said. Asked about the tariff impact on growth, Phua underlined that S&P takes a long-term approach. 'Exposure of India to the US in terms of exports is just 1 pc of GDP. So, even though tariffs remain high, we don't think it will have an overall impact on India's long-term growth prospects. Short term, it might have some marginal hit to growth, over a longer term, we believe India's growth story remains sound,' he added. India can tango with China, but must watch its step with cold realism

The Chinese minister was expansive about deepening ties, declaring that the setbacks they faced in the past few years were not in China's interests Business Standard Editorial Comment Mumbai Listen to This Article Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's two-day visit to India, a visit coming after three years, is being viewed as signs of a thaw in Sino-Indian relations, which have been frozen since 2020 following the People's Liberation Army's incursions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. But the visit, which includes talks with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and another round of boundary negotiations with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, also needs to be viewed against the American President's trade wars and the impending deadline for the United States (US) to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on
