How postcards made Britain

Spectator02-07-2025
Worse for drink, and lonely in his Hollywood apartment, F. Scott Fitzgerald sat down to write a postcard. He began, 'How are you?', an important question as he was planning to send the postcard to himself.
Although he never sent it, perhaps he understood the magical ability of the postcard to cheer us up. They've been doing that since the first ones – plain cards bearing a pre-printed stamp – were introduced into Britain in 1870. It took time for the current format as we know it to develop: picture on one side and, on the other, a space for the address and some words.
By the Edwardian period, 800 million cards were being sent a year. They had the same kind of impact on communication that early text messages had for us and for similar reasons – they were quick, cheap and the limited space tended to make the messages more immediate.
Postcards could even be lifesavers. Sweetheart messages during the first world war between troops in the trenches and loved ones at home were good for morale, as long as they escaped the attention of the army's censors. Often the troops drew painted love tokens and messages on one side – a moment of tenderness as the shells fell. Sometimes they sent cards embroidered by local French and Belgium families. These little pieces of art were a way of standing up against the brutality of the conflict. They might feature a flag or patriotic message or black cats for good luck. No two cards were the same, and millions were sent.
It was in the 1940s that the postcard became a cultural icon, defining a certain kind of bawdy humour. James Bamforth was a portrait photographer who began producing the first saucy seaside postcards in 1910. They are glorious, rude and full of larger-than-life ladies and little men. Usually, they highlight a misunderstanding between the sexes and are pretty astute on sexual politics. The master of the art was Donald McGill, who produced 12,000 magnificently vulgar designs. His work caused such an uproar that in 1954 he was fined under the Obscene Publications Act. An early defender of his cards was George Orwell: 'The corner of the human heart that they speak for might easily manifest itself in worse forms, and I for one should be sorry to see them vanish.'
I have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to postcards. Indeed, I owe my life to them. My father was a cockney who couldn't read or write. When he was on active service in Suez he received a postcard from a prospective pen pal in London. He showed the card to his commanding officer, who answered it with another one – pretending to be my dad. He commented that the young woman who was writing seemed quite posh and nice. He became my father's Cyrano de Bergerac. Correspondence by card continued for a year or so and after my father was demobbed, he met his pen pal. They married and they had me.
Sadly, postcards have been in steep decline for decades, but they are still sent as a memento of a family holiday in some seaside town. I received one recently from a relative which simply said: 'Weather shit, can't wait to come home.' There is something quite profound in those seven words.

Brooklyn Beckham fans spot snub in Nicola Peltz vow renewal snaps

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz have shared loving snaps of them renewing their vows – but his followers have spotted what they deem to be a massive snub to dad David. The eldest Beckham son, 26, married Nicola, 30, in 2022 after dating for three years – and three years on from their wedding day, they returned to pledge new promises to one another. And the pair took to Instagram to share the adorable pictures from the big day, with Brooklyn and Nicola getting back into their wedding outfits to pledge their love to one another once more. But it wasn't long before Brooklyn's followers spotted that not only were Victoria and David absent, but that Nicola's dad Nelson officiated the ceremony. In the very final picture of the gallery, Brooklyn and Nicola stood opposite each other as Nelson read from a piece of card he was holding in both his hands. Commenting, Instagram user @Mary.031987 said that the 'last picture will be a stab in your father's heart' and added that the apparent feud between the Beckhams was 'very sad'. @Gwenidu69 called them 'beautiful pictures' but add that 'it's a shame that your family is missing, it's sad,' while other fans praised Brooklyn for what they see as him 'putting [his] wife first'. Speaking to People about renewing his vows, he said: 'To be honest, I could renew my vows every single day with her. I think the most important thing that someone can do is find that person that they're going to spend the rest of their life with. 'It definitely shapes you as a person. Yeah, it was really, really cute. It was really fun,' adding that his new vows were much longer than his ones from three years ago. Brooklyn's post comes just 48 hours after mum Victoria welcomed fans into her and husband David's welcome getaway to Saint-Tropez amid the apparent feud. The fashion designer and former Spice Girls singer, 51, jetted off to the French Riviera alongside her ex-footballer partner, 50, earlier this month. Victoria and David were spotted sharing a loved-up moment aboard their hugely expensive yacht last week, and Victoria gave fans a more intimate glimpse into their Mediterranean escape. Tagging the family in a gallery with the caption 'Kisses', Victoria shared 14 photos from the family holiday – their sons Cruz, 20, and Romeo, 22, and daughter Harper Seven, 14, also joined them on the trip. Several of the sweet snaps showed the superstar family embracing one another and enjoying a relaxing time on the luxurious south French coast. Other pictures showed that David and Romeo are looking more and more like each other as the years go by, while the last photo in the gallery saw Cruz donning one of his dad's old football shirts. Absent from the holiday was Brooklyn, who had just spent the week also vacationing in Saint-Tropez with wife Nicola ahead of renewing their vows. Social media sleuths deduced that Brooklyn and his parents were days apart in their respective trips, meaning that they only missed each other by less than a week. Harper and Romeo were spotted by a harbour in Saint-Tropez, almost in the exact same spot where Brooklyn had recently posted videos of himself cooking. However, as the Beckham siblings were pictured arriving in France, Brooklyn had reportedly already departed for the United States, where he's currently based. The near miss came after it was revealed earlier this month that Brooklyn no longer followed brothers Cruz and Romeo on social media, with the latter two having also unfollowed Brooklyn's wife Nicola. An insider told The Sun: 'Brooklyn had no idea until he read about it online. It's possible Romeo and Cruz blocked them, which would make it appear as him no longer following the brothers. 'He and Nicola certainly didn't unfollow them or block them – they're as confused as anyone else. The first they heard about it was when it was being reported on.' More Trending Those rumours had been talked down over the last three years, but when Brooklyn and Nicola missed David's 50th birthday celebrations in May – and Brooklyn speculation started again. The exact reason behind the reported rift is yet to be revealed, but it has been claimed by insiders that Victoria is 'desperate' for things to be patched up between her once-close family. 'Victoria hates to think about her family being so divided, especially with it involving one of her children,' an source told Metro last month. Match of the Day line-up confirmed for first show since Gary Lineker's BBC exit

Match of the Day returns this week with the 2025/26 Premier League season set to kick off and the BBC programme is set to look very different in their first broadcast of the campaign Match of the Day is set to return this weekend with a brand-new line up, with Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer set to play pivotal roles. The BBC programme returns to screens on Saturday to coincide with the start of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign. ‌ And while the highlights show retains its hugely popular format, it's set to look very different. Long-serving host Gary Lineker departed at the end of last season, bringing to an end a near three-decade stint at the helm. ‌ The BBC confirmed who would be taking the reins from the England icon shortly afterwards. MOTD2 host Mark Chapman is set to share the role alongside Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates. ‌ And it's now been revealed who will be fronting coverage this weekend. Chapman will reportedly lead the first show of the new campaign having presented the show's Sunday spin-off since 2013. Chapman will be supported by former strikers Shearer and Rooney, who have been pencilled in for punditry roles, according to The Sun. The Newcastle icon has been a regular guest on the programme, while Rooney now appears to be focusing on his punditry career after his disastrous spell with Plymouth Argyle was ended in December last year. Away from the flagship show, Cates' Match of the Day debut has been planned for this Wednesday. She will lead coverage of the highlights of Tottenham Hotspur's UEFA Super Cup clash with French giants Paris Saint-Germain. The BBC announced on January 15 that Cates, Chapman and Logan would be the new presenting team. The news came following weeks of speculation about who would take over from Lineker after he said last year that he was stepping down. The 64-year-old had long intended the final Match of the Day of last season, on May 26, to be the last time he would present the highlights programme but he was planning to stay on to front the BBC's live coverage of the FA Cup and 2026 World Cup. ‌ Earlier in the month however he announced he was bringing forward his departure following a social media row in which he shared a post about Zionism featuring a depiction of a rat, historically used as an antisemitic trope. Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid presenter and host of Match of the Day since 1999, apologised unreservedly for the post but said it was 'best for all concerned' if he left completely. Cates has been a presenter with Sky Sports since 2016, fronting coverage of the Premier League. She will continue her role with Sky. Elsewhere, Logan has long been with the BBC having already presented Match of the Day in Lineker's absence on a host of occasions.

Nicola Sturgeon memoir on sale three days before embargo

Ms Sturgeon will also be interviewed on STV at 7pm on Monday evening ahead of the book's release. However, the book is already on sale in more than one branch of Waterstones including in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow and in Newton Mearns. Read More: The Herald understands that publisher MacMillan has not brought forward the release date. In extracts of the book serialised so far, Ms Sturgeon said Alex Salmond 'effectively admitted' he was guilty of one of the complaints about his behaviour towards women which led to his split from the SNP. She also talks about a rumour that swept social media in 2020 which claimed she was having a single-sex affair with the French ambassador to the UK, Catherine Colonna. She said that the story, which was fake, was fuelled by 'blatant homophobia' - and that she and Ms Colonna had laughed about during a meeting of EU ambassadors in the Scottish government's London office – even going as far as being photographed together to 'troll the trolls'.
