The discussion, led by Dr Nader Kazem (a writer and former professor of cultural studies at the University of Bahrain), examined the significance of cultural diversity as a fundamental element in shaping a unifying national identity, as well as strategies to preserve it amid rapid regional and global changes. Dr Kazem emphasised that multiculturalism and the coexistence of diverse identities within a single society require high levels of tolerance, acceptance, and respect for others — a theme that has persisted throughout history but gains new relevance in the context of modern nations. Dr Kazem noted that globalisation, emerging decades ago, has increased interconnectivity among societies, influencing local cultural distinctiveness and giving rise to standardized global cultural patterns in areas such as architecture, cuisine and fashion.
The session spotlighted Oman's pioneering experience in cultural pluralism and peaceful coexistence, showcasing tangible examples from its cultural, artistic and literary heritage as key contributors to national identity. — ONA

Gulf Scout Camp wraps up, empowers youth
SALALAH: The Gulf Scout Summer Camp for Advanced Scouts concluded at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah. Organised by the Directorate-General of Scouts and Guides at the Ministry of Education, the camp was held under the theme: 'Community Partnership: Leadership and Responsibility to Build the Future.' Bringing together around 350 scouts and leaders from across the Sultanate of Oman and GCC countries, the camp saw representation from all Gulf states, with eight participants from each. In his concluding remarks, Ahmed bin Abdullah al Humaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the camp, highlighted the goals achieved during the camp — chief among them, shaping well-rounded, capable young individuals ready to contribute to national development. He noted that the camp's diverse activities aimed to build self-reliance, enhance responsibility, and develop leadership skills through hands-on scouting techniques and community engagement. 'The camp embodied determination and a forward-looking spirit,' Al Humaimi said, 'preparing a conscious generation that understands its national role, values teamwork and volunteering, and proudly embraces patriotism.' The closing ceremony featured a visual presentation showcasing key moments and activities from the week-long camp. This included leadership training workshops, specialised scouting courses, and various events designed to foster community service and team spirit. Shaikh Tariq bin Khalid al Hinai, Wali of Taqah and the event's patron, honoured the participating scouts and the organisations that contributed to the success of the camp. Plastic-free market initiative launched
SINAW: The Environment Authority on Thursday launched the 'Plastic-Free Market' initiative in several traditional open-air markets across Al Sharqiyah North Governorate, as part of its ongoing efforts to implement the third phase of Ministerial Decision No 8/2024 regarding the ban on plastic shopping bags. Mohammed bin Amer al Hajri, Director of the Environment Department in the governorate, explained that the initiative includes an awareness week targeting commercial outlets and traditional markets in the wilayats of Al Sharqiyah North. The campaign began on Thursday with a visit to the 'Thursday Market' in the Wilayat of Sinaw and will continue next week to cover the 'Monday Market' in Wadi Bani Khalid, the 'Tuesday Markets' in Al Mudhaibi and Bidiyah, the 'Wednesday Market' in Ibra, as well as traditional markets in the wilayats of Al Qabil and Dima W'attayeen. — ONA

Thumrait Sanitary Landfill elevates waste management in Dhofar to global standards
Thumrait: Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah) is designing and constructing a second cell at Thumrait Sanitary Landfill in Dhofar Governorate, with an additional capacity of 3,029,768 cubic metres. The first cell of the landfill was operationalized in 2017 with a capacity of 2,345,910 cubic metres. This step comes in response to the growing demand for waste management services in the governorate. The company is also currently building an integrated leachate treatment station at the landfill. The treated water produced will be used for irrigating inedible plants, among other applications that enhance efficiency and sustainable operations, reducing environmental impact and preserving natural resources. Eng. Mohsin Mohammed Al Barwani, Director General of Planning and Service Improvement for the Municipal Solid Waste Sector, stated that Thumrait Landfill represents an effective model for sustainable, science-based waste management, adhering to global best practices to minimise emissions and maximize resource utilisation. In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), he emphasised that be'ah remains committed to innovation in waste management, strengthening partnerships with government entities and the community, and developing environmental infrastructure to support future generations and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future. During Khareef Dhofar season, Thumrait Landfill sees intensified activity in receiving and processing waste, with operations scaling up to accommodate approximately 74 waste trucks daily—averaging 1,200 tonnes per day—compared to the usual 58 trucks and 850 tonnes per day during the rest of the year. It is worth noting that waste reception and processing at the landfill are carried out through precise systems, including weighing, unloading, and preliminary treatment in advanced engineered cells designed and implemented according to the highest global specifications, ensuring environmental safety and community protection.
