JNUSU demands hostel extension for PhD scholars, reinstatement of JNUEE for admissions

Hindustan Times13-05-2025

New Delhi, The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union on Tuesday reiterated its demand for academic relief measures, including an hostel extension for PhD scholars from the 2019 batch and the reinstatement of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination for PhD admissions.
In a statement issued here, the students' body urged the administration to provide an extension to the 2019 PhD batch, allow four years of PhD for the 2018 MPhil-PhD integrated batch, and scrap hostel eviction notices sent to the PhD scholars of 2018 and subsequent batches.
It emphasized that accommodation should be ensured until the submission of theses.
Following a meeting with the university's Evaluation Branch, the JNUSU stated that the vice chancellor had approved the extension for the 2019 batch based on the recommendation of the Research Advisory Committee .
While the official notice was expected to be issued on Tuesday, the JNUSU said that it would follow up if the process faced delays.
Regarding the 2018 integrated MPhil-PhD batch, the matter remains under consideration by the university's Legal Cell.
The JNUSU has urged the Evaluation Branch to send a reminder to expedite the decision.
Separately, in a meeting with the Director of Admissions, Prof. Suneel Kateriya, the students' union pressed for reinstatement of the JNUEE for PhD admissions.
The JNUSU questioned the rationale behind replacing the JNUEE with UGC-NET and conveyed the widespread concern among students over the shift.
According to the JNUSU, Prof. Kateriya cited technical difficulties, staff shortages and financial constraints as reasons for discontinuing the JNUEE.
However, the JNUSU asserted that most schools and special centres had responded in favour of reinstating the JNUEE after a consultation initiated by the Admissions Branch in July 2024.
The JNUSU said that it would meet Deputy Registrar Manoj Kumar Manuj on May 14 to further pursue the matter and reaffirmed its demand for reinstatement of the JNUEE from the current admission cycle itself.
The JNUSU also called upon students to actively support and participate in its ongoing campaign.

Gender-neutrality push of JNU admin futile: Students

NEW DELHI: After the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration decided to replace the Hindi term 'Kulpati' with 'Kulguru' as the Vice-Chancellor's designation, citing gender neutrality and alignment with ancient Indian academic traditions, students on Wednesday strongly criticised the move as superficial and politically-motivated. The JNU Students' Union (JNUSU), in a letter dated June 4, wrote, 'We understand your urgency to change the designation from 'Kulpati' to 'Kulguru' as a move toward gender neutrality. We do not hesitate to say that you are following the path of your ideological home, i.e, RSS-BJP.' The decision, made during an Executive Council meeting earlier this year, follows similar developments in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where universities adopted 'Kulguru' to reflect the 'guru-shishya' tradition and remove gendered connotations from titles. However, calling the change symbolic, JNUSU added, 'Your name-change gesture rings hollow without substantive action. We urge you to move beyond symbolism: reinstate GSCASH, restore deprivation points, build gender-neutral facilities, and implement transgender reservations.' Students also criticised dismantling of Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) and the removal of deprivation points in PhD admissions, arguing that these changes have disproportionately affect marginalised groups, including women and transgender students While the university says the change is aimed at promoting inclusivity, students argue that inclusivity cannot be achieved without structural reform: 'Symbolic gestures alone cannot ensure gender justice.'

'Optics over action': JNU students' union hits out over ‘kulguru' move

Jawaharlal Nehru University's decision to replace the term 'Kulpati' with 'Kulguru' for the designation of Vice Chancellor in all official academic records, including degree certificates, drew sharp criticism from the JNU Students' Union. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the JNUSU accused the administration of engaging in 'optics over action' and demanded urgent reforms instead of mere gestures on issues of gender justice. 'We understand your urgency to change the designation as a move toward gender neutrality. But symbolic gestures alone cannot ensure gender justice; fundamental transformation requires institutional reforms,' the statement said. The student body also accused the vice-chancellor of following a 'political and ideological trend' of renaming rather than reforming, likening the change to what it described as the Modi government's pattern of "functioning as a name changer while claiming to be a game changer". The statement also criticised the administration's 'unwillingness' to engage in dialogue, citing unanswered requests for a meeting on the JNU entrance examination. The change in the name was approved in a recent meeting of the university's Executive Council held in April, and action has been initiated by the Controller of Examinations to implement the shift. The university's move is in line with similar changes already implemented by the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments. The JNUSU also listed four key demands in the statement, including immediate reinstatement of the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH), which it claimed was more democratic and survivor-friendly than the existing Internal Complaints Committee (ICC); restoration of deprivation points in PhD admissions, which helped level the field for marginalised and women students; construction of gender-neutral washrooms and hostels; and the implementation of reservations for transgender students in line with the Supreme Court's NALSA judgment.
