Bathinda: Activists from the farmer forums
Sanyukt Kisan Morcha
(Non-Political) and
Kisan Mazdoor Morcha
(KMM) clashed with police on their way to a venue where Punjab assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and ministers Tarunpreet Singh Sondh, Laljit Singh Bhullar, and Baljit Kaur were in attendence.
The farmers, under a joint call from both forums, assembled in various districts to deliver memorandums seeking compensation for damage to wheat crops due to fires and untimely rains, as well as for items that went missing from protest sites at Shambhu and Khanauri on March 19.
The activists gathered in Faridkot while the speaker and ministers were in town for a programme under the 'Yudh Nashia Virudh' (War Against Drugs) campaign. The activists aimed to reach the venue to deliver their memorandum but were stopped at a distance. When the farmers attempted to proceed, the police used force to stop them and detained several activists. In the ensuing chaos, some farmers opposed the use of force.
Activists claimed that the previous Punjab govt betrayed them by arresting farm leaders after a meeting with central and Punjab ministers and dismantling the morchas on March 19. They argued that farmers suffered due to fires in the fields and untimely rains. The activists added that despite the 'Yudh Nashia Virudh' campaign by the govt, drugs remain available in hotspot areas across districts.
Meanwhile, the assembly Speaker and the ministers resolved to eradicate drug abuse and claimed that the campaign is yielding desired results.

Amit Shah launches language hub to 'decolonise' admin

NEW DELHI: Continuing with his govt's 'decolonisation' project, Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday launched an Indian languages section within the department of official language as a step towards dispensing with the role of English in official communication. "It would prove to be a milestone in the path to freeing administration from the influence of foreign languages," Shah said as he announced the formation of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag. So far, English had been relied upon for easy and faster official communication and filework between the Centre and non-Hindi speaking states and also among the latter. "We will definitely win the battle against imposition of English upon us," Shah, who over his six-year tenure in MHA has ensured that all filework and official communication in MHA is carried out in Hindi, declared at the launch of the Indian languages section on Friday. Elaborating on the purpose of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag at a press conference last year, secretary in department of official language Anshuli Arya had stated: "Just like Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches in (non-Hindi speaking) states get instantly translated and can be heard by the public in their respective regional language, the Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag, in collaboration with Centre for Deployment of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), will put in place a universal translation system for official communication. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like At Last, An ED Pill for 87¢ That Actually Works Health Alliance by Friday Plans Learn More Undo " "For instance, if the chief minister of Tamil Nadu writes a letter to the Centre in Tamil, the Union minister here can read it in his language and have the reply sent in Tamil. This will help bring the regional languages on to the centre-stage," Arya said. In his address on Friday, Shah said the Indian languages section had made the department of official language "complete" by providing a strong and organised platform to all languages, incorporating the linguistic diversity of India. Shah underlined that the Indian people's potential can be fully exploited only when their process of thinking, analysis and decision-making are in their mother-tongue. "Every language of ours is completely connected with other languages and development of all languages is not possible without each assimilate like rivers into the Ganga of Indian culture," the Union home minister stated.

Stalin says Ministry of Home Affairs' remarks on delimitation are ‘vague'

Seeing a 'sinister design' by the Narendra Modi-led government in Census 2027 and the subsequent delimitation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday said the remarks of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs over the proposed delimitation exercise were 'vague' and further called for a 'clear Parliamentary commitment and a suitable Constitutional amendment.' Mr. Stalin also endorsed the edit published in The Hindu — 'Injustice in the delay - The announcement of the Census is welcome, but the delay is unjust'. On Thursday, a social media post of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said Union Minister Amit Shah had clarified on many occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern States would be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time. 'The MHA claims that the concerns of affected States will be addressed. But these are vague remarks. What is needed is a clear Parliamentary commitment and a suitable Constitutional amendment,' Mr. Stalin said in a social media post. Recalling the abrogation of Article 370, Mr. Stalin said: 'The Union government spoke of restoring Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union territory. This is the track record of the BJP we are dealing with.' If the Union government proceeded with delimitation based on the Census 2027, the democratic power of peninsular India would be 'reduced to irrelevance,' Mr. Stalin contended. Taking a swipe at his party's rival, AIADMK, over their electoral alliance with the BJP, Mr. Stalin, also the DMK president, said: 'Even if betrayers like the ADMK [AIADMK] choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival, the people of Tamil Nadu, led by the DMK, will never allow our State to be punished for its progress. Tamil Nadu will fight! Tamil Nadu will win!' Claiming that the delay in the Census was 'no accident', Mr. Stalin further said that the delimitation plan was 'no coincidence' and the danger that he warned of was 'at our doorstep.' There was a 'sinister design' in how the BJP-led Union government was implementing the national Census and the subsequent delimitation, Mr. Stalin said: 'Developed States, especially in the non-Hindi speaking south, which followed population control norms, will now be punished. Meanwhile, States that disregarded population control for decades are set to gain more seats in Parliament. This unfair shift skews the federal balance and rewards irresponsibility.' He also recalled his warning about this 'design' and referred to the contention of senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram on 'how this sleight of hand is unfolding.' Mr. Stalin emphasised: 'The time has come not only to be vigilant but also to craft counter-strategies to safeguard the South's voice.' The Census 2027 would form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data, he said, and further asserted that this gave the Union BJP-led government the means to 'restructure Parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the southern States.'
