Blobfish wins New Zealand's fish of the year after years of ugly label

More than a decade after being labeled the "world's ugliest animal," the blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) has made an unexpected comeback, winning New Zealand's "Fish of the Year" competition.
Organized by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, the contest saw the blobfish secure 1,286 votes, outpacing its closest competitor, the orange roughy, by fewer than 300 votes when polls closed Sunday.
The blobfish, known for its gelatinous, sagging appearance, has long been a subject of fascination and humor in online meme culture. However, its distinct anatomy serves a crucial purpose, allowing it to survive in deep-sea environments off the coasts of New Zealand and Australia.
Unlike most fish, the blobfish lacks a full skeleton, scales, muscles, and a swim bladder, which typically helps fish maintain buoyancy. Instead, its soft, low-density tissue enables it to float effortlessly above the seafloor.
Despite its online notoriety, the commonly shared image of the blobfish does not accurately reflect its appearance in the water. When brought to the surface, the sudden change in pressure disfigures its body, giving it the melted, grumpy look that made it famous.
The blobfish's victory in the competition highlights concerns about deep-sea conservation. While its exact population status remains unknown, its habitat is increasingly vulnerable to deep-sea trawling, a fishing practice that inadvertently captures and threatens blobfish populations.
According to Konrad Kurta, a spokesperson for the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, the blobfish is often caught as bycatch during bottom trawling for orange roughy, another deep-sea species.
Kim Jones, co-director of the trust, noted that both species face similar threats.
"In some ways, it was fitting that blobfish and orange roughy were close at the end," Jones said. "They both live in deep-sea environments near New Zealand, and managing orange roughy habitats more carefully could also benefit the blobfish."
The orange roughy, which came in second place, is considered a vulnerable species struggling with population decline due to overfishing. New Zealand dominates the global orange roughy market, accounting for about 80% of all catches.
Among the other contestants in the "Fish of the Year" competition, most were classified as endangered or vulnerable species—except for the blue cod, which finished in last place with just 260 votes.
While the blobfish's win highlights its cultural appeal, conservationists hope the attention will also raise awareness about the threats facing deep-sea ecosystems.

The attacking midfielder is highly rated by Liverpool and the club's academy expert Lewis Bower exclusively told Anfield Watch that he sees his style of play as similar to that of Kevin De Bruyne. "I would say Haydn, Murray-Holme. He's a midfielder, a really technical player. Probably should have been promoted already. He has such a good eye for a pass. There's a perfect weight on his passes, whether that would be from deep to isolate his winger, or in the final third, he has really good touches. He can use any part of his foot with flicks little pokes around the corner to be able to find plays that you, you don't really think are possible.

Why Kalen DeBoer chose Ty Simpson as Alabama football starting quarterback

Alabama football's second fall scrimmage was its first with a starting quarterback. Ty Simpson, after being named as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback days after Alabama's first scrimmage, ran the first-team offense Saturday, Aug. 16. And with a starter named, Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said the Crimson Tide now has the time to start officially preparing for Florida State and the rest of the 2025 season. "I think building a team and getting the momentum going," DeBoer said When we knew, we needed to do it. That's allowed us three weeks or prep building up our team for Florida State." After the first scrimmage, DeBoer said he and the Alabama coaching staff "knew we were at that point where we felt good about who should be the starter." Simpson was named Alabama's starting quarterback Monday, Aug. 11 after battling for starting reps with Austin Mack and Keelon Russell. In the second fall scrimmage, DeBoer said Mack and Russell "did a great job, same as (the) last scrimmage." Simpson, DeBoer said, had a higher completion percentage, but not as many explosive plays, giving credit to the defense. "Today, I thought he came out and executed the offense," DeBoer said. "And he just continues to be steady. Finds his times to make his plays. Today, he actually used his feet again and that's, I think, something people will probably underestimate as we go through the year of his ability to just make plays and keep plays alive. I thought he was steady. I thought he was consistent." Simpson has the most snaps of any quarterback on the Alabama roster, having backed up Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe for this past three seasons. Simpson has 381 career passing yards, 130 career rushing yards and three career touchdowns. Alabama football opens the 2025 season at Florida State Aug. 30.
