Meta and Yandex Exploited Android Loophole to Track Users Across Browsers and Apps

Meta and Yandex have been found to exploit a loophole in Android's architecture, enabling them to de-anonymize users' web browsing activities by linking them to persistent app identities. This tracking method bypasses standard privacy protections, including incognito mode and cookie clearing, raising significant concerns about user privacy.
Researchers from Radboud University, IMDEA Networks, and KU Leuven discovered that Meta's Pixel and Yandex's Metrica tracking scripts, embedded in millions of websites, communicate with their respective Android apps via the device's localhost interface. This communication allows the apps to receive browsing data directly from the browser, effectively linking web activity to user identities within the apps.
The tracking mechanism operates by having the browser-based scripts send data to specific ports on the localhost interface, where the apps are listening. For instance, Meta's apps listen on UDP ports 12580–12585, while Yandex's apps use ports 29009, 29010, 30102, and 30103. This setup enables the apps to collect browsing data, including cookies and metadata, even when users employ privacy measures like incognito mode or VPNs.

Meta began implementing this method in September 2024, while Yandex has utilized a similar approach since 2017. The widespread use of Meta Pixel and Yandex Metrica—estimated to be present on 5.8 million and 3 million websites respectively—suggests that a vast number of Android users could be affected.
The discovery has prompted responses from major browser developers. Google has initiated an investigation and is working on mitigations to prevent such tracking techniques. Mozilla is also developing solutions to protect Firefox users on Android from this invasive tracking. Meta has paused the functionality in question and is in discussions with Google to address the issue.
Privacy advocates and experts have expressed alarm over the findings. The method's ability to circumvent standard privacy controls and its potential to be used by malicious actors for surveillance underscore the need for stricter enforcement of privacy standards and greater transparency from tech companies regarding data collection practices.

At its peak, Nokia dominated the global mobile phone market, controlling half of it. However, its refusal to embrace the nascent Android operating system, its stubborn adherence to its own Symbian OS, and its later pivot to Windows Mobile revealed a pattern of inflexibility and a failure to adapt to fundamental market shifts. Between 2007 and 2013, Nokia lost almost everything. The company ignored the rise of touchscreen smartphones and underestimated the crucial role of third-party apps in attracting users. Despite being widely considered "too big to fail," Nokia's fall was spectacular. While the Nokia name still exists today through a limited number of Android-based devices, it has never recovered its former glory. In March, Tan took the helm, but he was soon accused of having ties to Chinese military-affiliated companies, a matter that has caused widespread concern among U.S. politicians. Republican Senator Tom Cotton sent a letter to Intel's board, alleging that Tan holds stakes in companies with Chinese military ties and accusing him of participating in a breach of U.S. export controls during his time leading Cadence Design Systems. This was followed by a direct call from President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform for Tan's immediate dismissal. The company's stock subsequently dropped by 3% in a single day, despite a positive performance by other technology stocks. Is There Salvation? Between erratic technical decisions, a lack of innovation, client loss, and leadership crises, Intel stands at a critical crossroads. It must either reinvent itself and reclaim its leadership role in the processor sector or join Nokia in the ranks of fallen giants. Instagram has launched three new major features — Repost, Instagram Map, and the Friends tab — for its users. With this option, one can share their last active location with a chosen group of friends. The user can see their locations and content they've posted from interesting places. Also, the feature is designed with safety as a priority — parents of supervised teen accounts will be notified if their child turns on location sharing. "Share locations with friends and see what's happening around you on the Instagram map. And if you're a parent with supervision set up for your teen, you have control over whether they can share their location, and who they're sharing with," said Instagram. When the app rolled out the Map feature, it caused a wave of confusion among users who were worried that their locations would be visible to all their followers. Some users have since been shocked to discover that their location was being shared, viral posts have shown. "Mine was turned on and my home address was showing for all of my followers to see," Instagram user Lindsey Bell wrote in reply to a warning posted by "Bachelor" reality television personality Kelley Flanagan to her 300,000 TikTok followers. "Turned it off immediately once I knew but had me feeling absolutely sick about it." In a TikTok video, Flanagan called Instagram's new location sharing feature "dangerous" and gave step-by-step instructions on how to make sure it is turned off. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri fired off a post on Meta-owned Threads stressing that Instagram location sharing is off by default, meaning users need to opt in for it to be active. "Quick Friend Map clarification, your location will only be shared if you decide to share it, and if you do, it can only be shared with a limited group of people you choose," Mosseri wrote. "To start, location sharing is completely off." The feature was added as a way for friends to better connect with one another, sharing posts from "cool spots," Instagram said in a blog post. Users can be selective regarding who they share locations with, and can turn it off whenever they wish, according to Instagram. Friends tab The Friends tab within Reels helps users see what their friends have liked, commented on, or recommended via Blends. Instagram shared these updates through an official blog post, accompanied by a reel from platform chief Adam Mosseri, where he opened up about the new features in detail. All three features are available in the UAE as of this week. According to Meta, the new features are meant to make the app more community focused, and help people connect with their friends.
