TTD ghee scam probe targets former top officials
Tirupati: The investigation into the adulterated ghee scam linked to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has entered a decisive phase, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is preparing to issue notices to two former senior officials of the temple body. This is the first time the probe has extended to the higher ranks of TTD's past administration.
Sources suggest one of the former officials may be summoned shortly, possibly in the presence of Appanna, a close aide to ex-TTD Chairman YV Subba Reddy. Appanna, who served as one of five personal assistants during Reddy's tenure under the YSRCP government, was recently questioned by SIT officials in Tirupati. Regarded as Reddy's most trusted aide, Appanna is believed to possess crucial information regarding the internal handling of ghee procurement and supply, which was later found to be adulterated.
Investigators are now examining how ghee contracts were awarded, any informal agreements that may have taken place, and the beneficiaries of such deals. Appanna is also known to have wide-reaching contacts in political and business circles, spanning Hyderabad to Delhi. A joint interrogation team, including three CBI Deputy Superintendents of Police and one from Andhra Pradesh Police, is leading the inquiry. Proceedings are being recorded in both audio and video formats.
Since the SIT launched its probe in November 2023 under Supreme Court direction, eight arrests have been made – six from dairies and two TTD staff. Until now, the investigation had largely avoided former trust board members, but Appanna's questioning has redirected the focus toward TTD's former top leadership.
In a related development, the SIT has detained Jyotish, a Kolkata-based businessman allegedly linked to the scam. A close associate of Bhole Baba Dairy's director Pomil Jain, Jyotish reportedly supplied raw materials, without formal invoicing for manufacturing the adulterated ghee. After initially evading authorities, he was traced to the outskirts of Kolkata and brought to Tirupati for questioning. Jyotish claimed ignorance about the ghee's end-use, insisting he acted on Jain's instructions.

After his cousin Gurlal was killed outside a nightclub in Chandigarh in 2020, he rose through the ranks due to his proximity with Lawrence Bishnoi and began targeting his rivals aggressively. Brar, who is accused of orchestrating the killing of Punjabi pop singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022, remained in Canada till 2023 but then fled to America. Sources said that he used a fake identity to enter the US territory that year as the Canadian Police escalated its crackdown on Indian gangs and Brar feared retaliation from his rivals. Last year in June, the NIA had announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for Brar and his associate Gurpreet Rajpura in the case of extortion and firing at the house of a businessman in Chandigarh.

UP man slits own throat on Eid-ul-Azha: ‘Sacrificing myself in the name of…'
A 60-year-old man in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district allegedly died by suicide by slitting his throat as a sacrifice on Eid-Ul-Azha on Saturday. Locals claimed that the deceased sacrificed himself on the day of Eid-Ul-Azha and left a note saying, 'I am sacrificing myself in the name of Allah and his messenger.' They stated that the man had used a knife to slit his throat inside a hut near his home, reported PTI. After his family members heard his cries, they found him in the hut and rushed him to the district medical college with the help of the police. Additional superintendent of police (north), Arvind Kumar Verma, told PTI, "Preliminary investigation suggests that the deceased inflicted the wound himself. The 60-year-old man's family members stated that the incident had occurred once he returned from the dargah of Sultan Syed Makhdoom Ashraf Shah around 10 am on Saturday after he offered Eid prayers. An hour later, she heard him groaning, and upon checking, saw that he was lying in a pool of blood with a knife next to him. His wife screamed at the sight of her husband and alerted neighbours, who informed the police. Discussing suicides can be triggering for some. However, suicides are preventable.
