Buy 5 Mid-Cap AI Infrastructure Stocks Amid U.S.-China Tariff Deal Hope

Globe and Mail20-05-2025

Wall Street rallied significantly on May 12 following positive news related to a tariff and trade deal between the United States and China. U.S. stock markets have faced massive volatility ever since President Donald Trump imposed a 10% baseline tariff on each and every country with which it trades. Tariff rates were much higher for several major trading partners of the United States.
U.S. technology behemoths, especially artificial intelligence (AI) giants, depend on a cheaper source of imports for high-end products. Consequently, AI stocks suffered severely fearing higher input costs and a near-term recession in the U.S. economy.
At this stage, it should be prudent to invest in mid-cap AI infrastructure stocks with a favorable Zacks Rank. Five such stocks are: Innodata Inc. INOD, Five9 Inc. FIVN, UiPath Inc. PATH, InterDigital Inc. IDCC and AeroVironment Inc. AVAV. Each of these are stocks currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
U.S.-China Tariff Deal Hope
On May 12, the United States and China agreed in a discussion in Switzerland to reach a temporary agreement that 'reciprocal' tariffs between both countries will be cut from 125% to 10%. Meanwhile, United States' 20% tariffs on Chinese imports relating to fentanyl will remain intact, meaning total tariffs on China will be 30%.
The United States had reached a tariff deal with the U.K. last week. The Trump administration is also involved in negotiation with its 17 other large trade partners including India for trade and tariff.
The chart below shows the price performance of our five picks year to date.
Innodata Inc.
Innodata has established itself as a crucial partner in this AI revolution by providing high-quality data needed to train advanced language models. INOD is expected to benefit from massive demand for supplying state-of-the-art data engineering to large language model building and maintenance over the long term.
INOD came up with first-quarter 2025 earnings of $0.22 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.17 per share. Revenues of $58.34 million surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.24%.
INOD's football-to-dime analogy effectively illustrates the vast untapped potential in AI data — if all possible human knowledge that could be captured as data represents a football, today's best AI models have only trained on data equivalent to the size of a dime.
The recent beta launch of Innodata's Generative AI Test & Evaluation Platform, powered by NVIDIA technology, represents a strategic expansion of the company's AI services portfolio. Investors should monitor how effectively INOD is commercializing new offerings such as the AI Test & Evaluation Platform.
The long-term growth of Innodata's business model is set to be backed by big techs, other big enterprises, industry-specific demand, federal agencies, public relations and healthcare. One of the most promising aspects of INOD's strategy is its successful customer diversification efforts.
Innodata has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 40.3% and -16.9%, respectively, for the current year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for current-year earnings remained the same over the last 60 days.
Five9 Inc.

On Feb. 19, Five9 introduced its Intelligent CX Platform powered by Five9 Genius AI on the Google Cloud space. FIVN also released new Five9 AI agents tailor-made for Google Cloud.
Five9 has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 9.6% and 11.7%, respectively, for the current year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for current-year earnings has improved 0.7% over the last seven days.
UiPath Inc.
UiPath provides an end-to-end automation platform that offers a range of robotic process automation solutions primarily in the United States, Romania, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and internationally. UiPath has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 6.8% and -1.9%, respectively, for the current year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for current-year earnings has improved 8.3% over the last 60 days.
InterDigital Inc.
InterDigital is benefiting from solid licensing momentum in the smartphone business. IDCC's global footprint, diversified product portfolio and ability to penetrate in different markets are impressive. IDCC reported strong first-quarter 2025 results, with both the top and bottom lines beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
IDCC's AI-powered Receiver Design for Future Wireless Communications was validated by Keysight Technology. The state-of-the-art innovation also optimizes throughput performance, reduces communication overhead and simplifies receiver architecture, making it suitable for 6G applications.
Apart from IDCC's strong portfolio of wireless technology solutions, the addition of technologies related to sensors, user interface and video to its offerings is likely to drive considerable value, considering the massive size of the market it licenses. Focus on advanced 5G and 6G research is a positive.

While Bitcoin Hits a New Price Record, Critics Still Have These Warnings for Crypto Investors

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) may have hit a new all-time high of $112,000 in May, but it's not out of the woods quite yet. Already, Bitcoin has retreated back down to the $105,000 level, and there are some critics warning about a further decline in price. While the long-term outlook for Bitcoin might be bullish, there could be quite a bit of uncertainty and volatility over the second half of 2025. Here are three key factors keeping the Bitcoin skeptics up at night. Tariff and trade uncertainty As long as tariffs continue to dominate the headlines, they will continue to have a direct impact on how investors view the crypto market. As a result, it's been a see-saw year for Bitcoin. After hitting an all-time high in January, Bitcoin dropped as low as $75,000 after President Donald Trump announced the new Liberation Day tariffs on April 2. Bitcoin has subsequently recovered, but every week seems to bring some new twist or turn in the tariff debate. The newest factor is the worsening state of the trade negotiations involving the U.S. and China. At one time, it looked like some kind of trade deal might be worked out by mid-summer. Now, it looks like the two sides are further apart than ever. So how will Bitcoin investors react? If they view Bitcoin as a safe haven asset, they might move even more money into Bitcoin, thereby boosting its price. However, if they view Bitcoin as a risky and volatile digital asset, then they might sell off, just as they did in April. Unfinished business in Washington When President Trump came into office in January, the future looked very bright indeed for Bitcoin. New crypto legislation looked like it would be ready to sign soon, and crypto enthusiasts were excited about upcoming Bitcoin initiatives from the Trump White House. However, five months into the presidency, and there's still a lot of unfinished business. Take the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, for example. Yes, Trump signed an executive order for its creation in March, but it delivered much less punch than many people expected. Most importantly, the executive order failed to outline how the government planned to buy Bitcoin in the future. As a result, investors are still waiting on some form of legislation, such as the BITCOIN Act proposed by Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), that will precisely outline a mechanism for buying more Bitcoin. On top of all that, there are now questions swirling around the Trump family's connections to Bitcoin. At the very least, there appear to be potential conflicts of interest. For example, Donald Trump's media company -- Trump Media & Technology Group -- recently divulged plans to buy $2.5 billion worth of Bitcoin. And members of the Trump family now have interests in a variety of Bitcoin-related projects. The four-year Bitcoin cycle Historically, Bitcoin has followed a fairly predictable pattern of boom and bust. The four-year Bitcoin cycle starts with a period of quiet accumulation, followed by a period of rapid growth. This leads to a Bitcoin bubble filled with hype and speculation. After that comes the crash. For example, the 2020-2021 rally that saw Bitcoin hit a (then) all-time high of $69,000 was quickly followed by a disastrous market crash that saw it lose 65% of its value in 2022. And the same pattern may be happening again. If history is any guide, then the final phase of the Bitcoin cycle could be arriving soon. Thus, even if Bitcoin soars to $150,000 this year, it might have a hard time holding on to those gains heading into 2026. If you'd have waited until now to buy Bitcoin, you might be buying at or close to the top of the market. By the end of 2025, it might already be too late. Only a 22% chance of failure? The good news is that most Bitcoin investors are remarkably bullish these days. According to online prediction markets, Bitcoin only has a 22% chance of falling below the $70,000 price level, and only a 16% chance of falling below the $60,000 price level. Long gone are the days when people regularly prognosticated that Bitcoin could fall all the way to zero. That being said, investors still need to be aware of the risks of investing in Bitcoin. The price of Bitcoin never goes straight up. It is highly volatile, filled with many peaks and valleys. If you don't have firm convictions about Bitcoin, it's remarkably easy to buy high and sell low. When it comes to Bitcoin, it's best to keep a long-term perspective. Bitcoin has never been a tariff-proof, inflation-proof, or recession-proof asset. But over a long enough time horizon, it continues to be the top-performing asset in the world. The only catch is that you have to be willing to hold on to it, through good times and bad. Should you invest $1,000 in Bitcoin right now? World Cafe Live Saved from Closure With New Leadership, Vision, and Funding Campaign Aimed to Transform Iconic Philadelphia Venue

World Cafe Live Faces the Music — and Fights Back with Comprehensive Rescue Plan Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - In a dramatic turn of events, World Cafe Live, Philadelphia's beloved nonprofit music venue and cultural hub, has been pulled back from the brink of closure. Earlier this year the landmark institution was rescued by Joe Callahan, a proud Philadelphia native, who has stepped in to lead World Cafe Live into a bold new chapter. As part of this revitalization effort, World Cafe Live has launched the 'Save The World Cafe Live' campaign, a $10 million fundraising initiative designed to stabilize, transform, and reignite the venue as a future-facing cultural force. The campaign is currently underway. You can support directly at World Cafe Live or through The Bean Foundation. 'This is more than saving a building — it's about protecting a cornerstone of Philadelphia's creative soul,' said Joe Callahan, now CEO of World Cafe Live. 'We're not just preserving a music venue. We're building a next-generation platform for artists, audiences, and community innovation.' Founded in 2004 and established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2010, World Cafe Live has hosted over 20,000 performances and impacted more than 300,000 youth and educators through music education programs. Yet despite this legacy, the venue now faces $6 million in accumulated debt due to pandemic-related disruptions and systemic underfunding. The 'Save The World Cafe Live' campaign outlines a comprehensive investment strategy aimed at both stabilizing and future-proofing the organization. Of the total goal, $6 million will be used for debt relief to eliminate long-term liabilities and reduce creditor risk. An additional $2 million is dedicated to recruiting and empowering a high-performing executive leadership team capable of guiding the organization through a transformative era. Another $1 million will support the development of cutting-edge digital infrastructure, including immersive media programming and metaverse performance initiatives. To ensure ongoing artistic and community impact, $500,000 will fund artist residencies and educational outreach, while the final $500,000 will be invested in operational efficiency and sustainability improvements designed to streamline internal systems and reduce long-term costs. 'This is a moment of rebirth,' Callahan continued. 'We're bringing in fresh executive leadership, embracing digital innovation, and recommitting to the mission that made World Cafe Live a vital part of Philadelphia's identity.' At the heart of this transformation is a renewed commitment to equity, technology, and community access, including immersive digital performance environments and expanded education initiatives aimed at underserved youth. 'We're determined to preserve World Cafe Live as a home for the arts in Philadelphia, but we need the community's voice, partnership, and philanthropy to do it,' Callahan said. 'Every donation is a step toward not just saving WCL, but future-proofing it.' 'Joe is a hometown guy with a deep personal connection to Philadelphia — not just as a leader, but as a music lover. When he introduced himself to the board, his emotion and authenticity made a lasting impact. That kind of passion is what World Cafe Live needs right now.' — Supporter, World Cafe Live Board Meeting 'This is where we saw Adele for the first time. Where Billie Eilish gave a goosebump-inducing early performance. And where countless Philly musicians got their first big break. That's what we're fighting for — a place where music lives, legacies begin, and communities come together.' 'This truly is a rescue — a big-time one — and it's worth rooting for. We can't assume the public knows what World Cafe Live means to this city, but once they do, we know they'll want to be part of saving it.' World Cafe Live's mission remains to 'open doors to music and culinary experiences that create connections, inspire learning, and celebrate who we all are.' Now, with a clear plan and visionary leadership, the organization is poised to expand that mission for decades to come. To support the campaign and learn more, visit the Beans Foundation website.
