Braves' Acuna to compete in Home Run Derby at home park in Atlanta

NEW YORK — Ronald Acuna Jr. of the host Braves was announced Wednesday as the first of the eight hitters to compete in the All-Star Home Run Derby at Atlanta's Truist Park on July 14.
Acuna, who homered on the first pitch of his May 23 return to the Braves following a torn left ACL, will be in the derby for the third time.

Celtics' Brad Stevens says Jayson Tatum progressing well, but won't return until ‘fully ready'
When Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the Celtics' conference semifinals loss the the New York Knicks, everything about Boston's immediate future changed. But what won't change is the Celtics' front office's prudence in making sure he has the space and time to make a full recovery. Boston president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said the All-Star is progressing well following surgery last month. But asked about whether the team had put a potential timeline on Tatum's return, Stevens was definitive that there would be no rushing the star's rehabilitation. 'We don't and we won't,' Stevens said Wednesday night following the first round of the NBA draft. 'We won't put a projected timeline on him for a long, long time. … It's baby steps right now. He's actually progressed great, but I don't know what that means in regard to projected timelines. But that will be in consultation with him … and everybody else to make sure when he hits the court he is fully ready, and fully healthy. And that will be the priority.' Tatum is expected to miss most if not all of next season. It has already had implications for next season, with the team opting to trade Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday — both key contributors from the 2024 title team — in an effort to get the team's salary under the luxury tax second penalty apron. But Stevens said All-Star Jaylen Brown has already been back to the Celtics' training facility since he had minimally invasive surgery to clean up his right knee. Brown is doing some light ball handling and work around the rim, Stevens said. 'We said be ready for training camp and I think he'll probably be going full well ahead of that,' Stevens said. While Stevens said league rules wouldn't allow him to address the pending trades of Porzingis or Holiday, he said anything they do this offseason is with an eye toward regaining flexibility after multiple seasons with a high payroll. 'As far as whatever moves that those are a apart of, they're all separate and hard and things that you're going to have to do your best to make sure you put yourself in the right positions,' Stevens said. 'We knew this was coming. This isn't a huge surprise. … The biggest thing for us is making sure that we balance that, maximizing what we can with regard to what we bring back so we can continue to build and grow.' ___ AP NBA:

Yankees' Max Fried continues to make case to start the All-Star Game after reaching 10 wins
CINCINNATI (AP) — Aaron Boone still has a couple weeks before deciding who will be the American League's starting pitcher for the All-Star Game. It could end up being one of his own players. Max Fried became the first pitcher to reach 10 wins this season in the New York Yankees 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. 'It's down the road. We'll see. He's making the case though,' Boone said about Fried's chances to start the midsummer classic on July 15 in Atlanta. The left-hander allowed one unearned run and four hits while striking out seven to improve to 10-2. Fried is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. 'I guess it's cool but we're all here just trying to win games. A lot of it is credit to my teammates. It's nice, but that's more of a team stat than an individual one,' said Fried about reaching double digits in wins. Fried signed a $218 million, eight-year contract with the Yankees last December and has excelled in his first year in pinstripes. He quickly became the staff's ace after Gerrit Cole was lost for the season during spring training due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Fried has four games this season where he has gone at least seven innings and not allowed an earned run, tied with Detroit's Tarik Skubal and San Diego's Nick Pivetta for most in the majors. He's second in the majors with a 1.92 ERA and 108 innings. 'Ever since (Cole) went down he's shown us why they paid him what they paid him and why he's the guy we thought he was going to be. Especially someone who I played against for four or five years, to play behind him now is amazing,' third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said. 'I always give him his prop and his flowers, but now he can take them any time he wants.' The 1.92 ERA is the third-lowest by a Yankees' pitcher is his first 17 starts with the club since earned runs became an official stat in both leagues in 1913. Fried has allowed two or fewer earned runs in all but two starts. He has been even more dominant after Yankees' losses, going 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts. 'I mean 10 wins in half a season, it's not easy to do in any era, especially now. But that's just a testament to how good and efficient he's been,' Boone said. In Northwest Division, NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder get deeper, Jazz get busy
After building an NBA championship team with a commitment to young player development, the Oklahoma City Thunder dived back into the draft pool a few days after the celebration. The Thunder used the 15th overall pick in the first round on Wednesday night on Thomas Sorber, a 6-foot-9 versatile defender with the potential to be an effective low-post scorer who played one season in college at Georgetown. Sorber can provide some bulk and depth behind the slender Chet Holmgren and his frontcourt partner, Isaiah Hartenstein. Oklahoma City also had the 24th pick, sending it to Sacramento in a proposed trade. General manager Sam Presti's trades in recent years have allowed the Thunder to stockpile picks for maximum control over the most unpredictable aspect of professional sports. They have as many as 10 first-round picks, including their own, over the next five years, including three in 2026. Last year's first-rounder, point guard Nikola Topic, is nearly recovered from a torn ACL in his left knee that kept him out for his entire rookie season. The Utah Jazz, who bottomed out this season with the worst record in the league, have a long way to go with their rebuild. After bad lottery luck left them with the fifth overall pick, they took wing Ace Bailey, who spent his only college season at Rutgers. 'I feel like I can improve on everything. I'm very young,' Bailey told reporters. 'I'm just coming to the game, so it's a lot of stuff I can improve, physically and mentally. I mean, from jump shots to more creativity, to more ballhandling, just all over the place.' The Jazz later moved up from 21st to 18th in a proposed trade with Washington that netted them point guard Walter Clayton Jr. from national champion Florida, a 22-year-old whose ball skills and clutch shooting were on full display throughout the NCAA Tournament. The Portland Trail Blazers moved down from 11th to 16th in a proposed trade with Memphis that landed them another big man, the 7-foot-2 Yang Hansen. With a young group led by Deni Avdija, Toumani Camara, Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson and Donovan Clingan, the Blazers finished a better-than-expected 36-46 this season.
