I tested best supermarket wine dupes – Whispering Angel copy was delicious and only cost £13
Supermarket Aldi is currently selling its own offerings at up to 51 per cent less than popular brands. And it's not the only place you can get all the taste of posher plonks at a bargain price.

From celebrity pinks to cellar-worthy reds, here drinks expert Helena Nicklin gives us her pick of the best big-name wine dupes.
Seek them out in stores to see if you can tell the difference when you are sipping.
Brand: Whispering Angel, £22
Dupe: Screaming Devil Rosé, £12.97, Asda
17
WITH its excellent tongue-in-cheek name and at almost exactly half the price of the very famous and very pricey French pink, you know exactly where the plonk producers were aiming here.
And the best bit is that it's not all about the great pun on the label as once it's in the glass this rosé is also very good to glug.
Another Cotes de Provence like Whispering Angel, it hails from the south of France and just like the winged bottle, Asda's tribute has a similar elegant salmon-pink colour.
With subtle peach and strawberry notes and a delightful salty tang, it's great stuff and slips down easily on a summery day.
Rating: 4/5.
Brand: Bread & Butter Chardonnay, £16
Dupe: Butter Side Up Chardonnay, £8.98, Asda

Blind tasting some of football biggest names to see who is the GOAT on and off the pitch
WINE drinkers love the Bread & Butter-branded bottle of Californian white because it does exactly what it says on the tin – which is to offer an unapologetically bold, toasty and buttery chardonnay. But all of that doesn't come in cheap with the Napa Valley tipple retailing at not far off £20 a bottle.
This Asda tribute aims to do the same and the clue is in the name as to where the influence for its flavours come from. It also hails from America's most famous wine region.
But it's a shame this Californian copycat slightly misses the mark when it comes to balance, as the vanilla here feels a bit fake.
My advice would be to drink it very cold or it can feel a tad sickly.
Old fashioned but still great for those who love that creamy, comfort pudding- style of white wine.
Rating: 2/5.
Brand: Villa Antinori Toscana Rosso, £20
Dupe: Toscana Rosso, £7.25, Aldi
ALDI knows a thing or two about creating decent dupes, and for this wine tribute it has gone properly classy with a more subtle version of a famous, posh Italian tipple that would set you back more than double the money.
Luckily their version retails at a far more affordable price.
It's made with a blend of international grapes including Tuscany's own sangiovese, which is the grape used to make chianti.
This tribute tipple gives spiced, sour cherry and cocoa powder vibes like the original expensive Toscano Rosso, but with a tad more fruitiness and not quite as much going on.
Still, it's a great red, ideal for sipping with spag bol and pizza – and the money you'll have saved will pay for a whole basket of goodies.
Rating: 4/5.
Brand: Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, £26.50
Dupe: Deluxe New Zealand Sauv Blanc, £8.49, Lidl
THE famous Cloudy Bay white was the first to cause ripples with its fantastic branded Marlborough Sauvignon and I would say that it changed the wine world as a result.
It became famous for a reason and certainly isn't a premium plonk you'd say no to. But it is very expensive even on a supermarket shelf and unfortunately for them, other producers are now catching up.
That's good news for sippers on a budget though.
This Lidl tribute tipple is exceptional for the price, giving you all the zesty citrus, cut grass and tropical notes you'd expect from high-end Cloudy Bay without being too much.
In a taste test, this would give Cloudy Bay a real run for its money.
Rating: 4/5.
Brand: Louis Latour Bourgogne Pinot Noir, £21
Dupe: Tradition Pinot Noir, £7.99, Lidl
FRANCE'S Burgundy region – which translates to Bourgogne in French – is the spiritual home of pinot noir, and Louis Latour is a big name in this field.
A premium heritage with proper credibility and wine buff appeal, this name produces fine plonks and that means sipping one of these famous tipples will start from a high price base.
At £21 a bottle it's seriously spendy even if it is one of their cheapest.
This Lidl Burgundy is clearly a blend of lesser grapes from around the region but in my opinion that actually gives it a more accessible – if a bit rustic – juicy profile, with ripe, cherry spice.
It looks the part, too. A top tribute for a fraction of the price.
Rating: 3/5.
Brand: Miraval Rosé, £20
Dupe: Monalie Rosé, £9.99, Lidl
YOU have to hand it to Lidl for going all out with this Stars In Their Eyes-style blatant dupe of Brad Pitt's marvellous, Miraval pink wine.
The bottle shape, label and capsule are all very familiar, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the A-lister vineyard's tipples. And to be fair it's not just a pretty packaging copycat, as the wine in the bottle is decent too.
Another Cotes de Provence, just like Miraval, but for half the price of its more famous friend. This is equally dry and elegant, though perhaps a little less charming and less fruity. It might not be made by a star, but it's decidedly drinkable and looks posh.
And for half the price, too.
Rating: 3/5.
Dupe: Coonawarra Barossa Cabernet, £6.69, Aldi
THE uncanny likeness of this label from Aldi to the posh sip makes even wine experts like me look twice.
The resemblance is certainly remarkable on the shelf.
Australian brand Penfolds really sets the benchmark for premium shiraz from Down Under and its Max's cab sauv is something special.
It's well worth treating yourself too, but at £22 a time it's hardly a budget bottle.
This brilliantly blatant copy from Aldi does a great job with a fudgy, blackcurrant and eucalyptus-scented cabernet for an incredible £6.69.
Okay, it hasn't quite got the same class and is a touch sweeter, but it's still cracking in its own right for the super-low price tag.
And you can tell it's really from Barossa too, rather than being a generic, sugary blend.
Rating: 5/5.
Brand: Kylie Signature Rosé, £10
Dupe: Rosalie Rosé, £4.99, Aldi
IF you squint, the squiggle on the label could be Kylie's autograph and Aldi's Rosalie also has a very similar-shaped bottle so you'd be forgiven for grabbing the copycat without realising.
Kylie's vino is from the Languedoc region of France, however, and is a bit juicier and more generous than the prim and proper pinks of Provence, which is probably why it sells so well.
The Rosalie is Provencal, but sadly that's not an upside as it proves why wine from here should never be this cheap-tasting, boggy and unfresh.
A great dupe when it comes to doing a double take on the shelf, but when it comes to sipping I'd suggest you try other budget Languedoc pinks that give more Kylie-style flavours for less.
Rating: 2/5.

Former child star reveals they went to 'weight loss camp' for Hunger Games role that Jennifer Lawrence won
Former child star Alyson Stoner revealed that they went to a 'medical weight loss camp' in preparation to audition for the lead role in The Hunger Games - which went to Jennifer Lawrence. The 31-year-old Camp Rock alum — who previously ended their feud with Demi Lovato — got candid about the 'strenuous' lengths they took in their upcoming memoir Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything which hits shelves on August 12. Alyson — who came out as queer in 2018 and uses they/them pronouns — described the workout regime and diet they underwent while simultaneously battling an eating disorder. In an excerpt of the book, per Vanity Fair, the star penned that playing Katniss would be the 'ultimate role' and 'ultimate strong female lead.' They continued, 'But the role was playing with fire for me. Katniss was characteristically thin — not starving, but small enough to reflect growing up in an underfed district — and muscular from hunting and archery. 'If I was going to devote myself to checking every box of the character description, I had to commit to strenuous training without fully succumbing to my eating disorder.' Alyson began undergoing more intense workouts months before the audition. The star explained that they were ready for such a pivotal role in their career and explained, 'I'd spent my whole career erring on the side of practicality and it hadn't amounted to a breakthrough. So this time, I jumped for the moon.' At the age of 17, Alyson was approved to attend a 'world-renowned medical weight loss camp' — which offered a two-week program that included 'seven hours of daily exercise on a calorie deficit.' At the time, the former Disney channel star admitted to already being underweight and wrote that they 'didn't recognize the irrational exceptions that doctors (and society) made for Hollywood, because it was all I knew.' Alyson recalled getting a physical done when they were 10 before filming Cheaper By The Dozen. They explained a doctor found a heart murmur but didn't add the discovery to their file 'because it "might stop the production company from letting you work." 'I followed the doctor's orders and ignored the murmur like he did, deducing that Hollywood must exist above medicine, above the law, and even above common sense.' Alyson's initial goal when preparing for the Katniss audition was not to lose weight but instead build muscle. At the age of 17, Alyson was approved to attend a 'world-renowned medical weight loss camp' — which offered a two-week program that included 'seven hours of daily exercise on a calorie deficit'; seen in 2010 at age 17 in NYC 'Doctors and trainers should've never permitted an underweight minor to do seven hours of fourteen-mile hikes, heavy lifting, and high-intensity cardio,' the star penned. 'But all I had to say was that I was training for an acting role. They assessed me as mentally stable and opened the door.' By the end of two weeks, Alyson revealed the results from the intense training and diet and said their 'body fat percentage dropped into the range of elite gymnasts.' The star shared how they became 'hooked' on the regime which negatively affected their immune system and caused massive fatigue as well as lightheadedness. Alyson prepared three scenes for the day of the audition and one of the scenes ended up being cut. They waited to hear back following the audition for days, and their body ended up going into 'starvation mode.' Alyson recalled 'completing the biggest binge of my life' and wrote, 'Twelve hours later, I awoke to a revolting migraine and lethargy. 'Somehow, I was still craving sugar. But before I could think about spoiling another day, I had to face the self-inflicted damage of the night before.' The star added, 'When I stepped onto the scale, I rubbed my eyes in disbelief. What the hell? I gained back every single pound I lost over two months? In a few hours?! It was my worst nightmare. 'My body had held on to every morsel of food and liquid ounce, unsure when it would be fed again. All my progress was erased.' While Alyson did not end up winning the role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games franchise, they are known for other projects. The star appeared in movies such as Cheaper By The Dozen (2003), Step Up (2008) as well as the Disney channel movies Camp Rock (2008) and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010). Alyson showcased their dance skills in the past by appearing in Missy Elliot's 2002 music for Work It at the age of nine. They have also previously talked about the effect that the audition preparation for The Hunger Games had on them. During an interview with Access Hollywood in 2022, they explained, 'I am not sure I have ever shared this explicitly, but I was auditioning for The Hunger Games for the lead role, Katniss. 'I was so committed to the audition process that I underwent very intense physical training, and I was on a very restrictive diet.' The star appeared in movies such as Cheaper By The Dozen (2003), Step Up (2008) as well as the Disney channel movies Camp Rock (2008) and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010); seen with Demi Lovato in Camp Rock sequel Alyson admitted to checking themselves into rehab and remembered, 'My hair is starting to fall out, my skin is sallow, and I'm medically underweight. I feel obsessive about these behaviors, and I really need help.' The star has been candid with fans over their struggles with anorexia, bulimia and anxiety. In 2018, Alyson came out as queer and later revealed that they were fired from a children's television show soon after, although they didn't disclose the name of the series. They have continued to voice the character of Isabella in the animated series Phineas And Ferb and attended 2025 Comic Con in San Diego last month to take part in a panel for the show.

Cops make disturbing find outside Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary concert in San Francisco
San Francisco police made a disturbing discovery over the weekend, just outside a concert series marking the Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary. Police say they were patrolling the area of Fulton Street and 35th Avenue outside of the famed Golden Gate Park on Saturday, when they came upon an 'illuminated open trailer' with a man inside at around 11pm. As the officers got closer, they could see numerous tanks inside the vehicle. They believed the tanks may have been filled with nitrous oxide, and arrested 32-year-old Thomas Siderio, of Philadelphia, at the scene. As he was taken into custody, officers also seized about 100 metal tanks as well as numerous balloons they say point to Siderio's plan to ingest the laughing gas, and towed his vehicle. Siderio was then booked into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of distributing nitrous oxide and on suspicion of possessing nitrous oxide with the intent for intoxication. The substance, also commonly referred to as laughing gas, produces a feeling of relaxation, laughter and dizziness. It is typically used as a sedative at dentists offices, but is also frequently used at parties and concerts for its euphoric and hallucinogenic effects, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. While the gas is approved for use in medical settings and as a food additive for aerosol spray in products such as whipped cream, it is criminalized for recreational purposes - as its overuse can cause suffocation and death. 'Our officers will continue to patrol all areas of Golden Gate Park and the surrounding neighborhood,' police said in a statement. 'SFPD is dedicated to keeping everyone safe and will continue to ensure concertgoers have a safe time while in our city.' The 60th anniversary concert series was meant to provide a boon to the local economy, KRON reports. 'When we make space for creativity and celebration, the whole city benefits,' Mayor Daniel Lurie said at a news conference ahead of the weekend's festivities. He added that small businesses in the area had 'already seen a noticeable increase in foot traffic and fans come to the historic neighborhood.'
