Two Melaka store workers hurt in early morning robberies
MELAKA: Two employees at 24-hour convenience stores were injured in separate incidents involving robbery and attempted robbery here early this morning.
In a statement, Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit said the first incident occurred at around 4.40 am in Taman Sin Hoe, Bukit Baru. A 20-year-old worker, who was alone at the time, sustained head injuries after being struck with a suspected baseball bat wrapped in black cloth.
The attacker, described as wearing a helmet and face mask, approached the counter asking for an RM50 e-wallet top-up before grabbing the cash drawer. A struggle ensued, during which the victim was assaulted. The suspect fled with approximately RM300.
The victim was taken to Melaka Hospital and is in stable condition.
In the second incident, around the same time in Saujana Puri, Bukit Katil, a man dressed as a food delivery rider entered another store and also requested an e-wallet top-up.
'When the 31-year-old cashier attempted to return the change, the suspect reached into the cash drawer. The victim intervened and was struck on the wrist with a metal object, believed to be part of a tripod,' said Christopher.
The suspect fled on a Yamaha LC motorcycle with a food delivery box. No money was taken, though the employee sustained minor injuries.
Both cases are being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt in the course of committing robbery.

High Court sets Aug 17 for mention in Sabari Baharom murder case
ALOR STAR: The High Court here has fixed Aug 17 for mention of a murder case involving a contractor and his nephew, who are accused of killing retired Felcra employee Sabari Baharom, 62, last year. Judge Datuk Mohamad Abazafree Mohd Abbas set the date after being informed that the defence had yet to complete the required document submissions. Deputy public prosecutor Kamaliza Md Zain appeared for the prosecution, while both accused were represented by counsel T. Jayaraj. Family members of the late Sabari were present during the proceedings. On April 15, the accused, Mazuan Hanafi, 39, and Muhd Asyraf Idris, 27, claimed trial at the High Court to the charge of murdering Sabari on Sept 4, 2024. According to the charge, the two were jointly accused of killing the victim on a bridge in Kampung Empa, along Sungai Padang Terap in Kubang Pasu, at around 5.30am. The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death penalty, or, if not sentenced to death, imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years and up to 40 years. Sabari, who lived alone in Kampung Mengkuang Tengah, Kuala Pegang, Baling, was reported missing on Sept 4 last year. The case was reclassified as a murder investigation on Sept 30, after police arrested two main suspects, who were previously carrying out renovation work at a neighbour's house. Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh reportedly said the suspects confessed to binding Sabari's hands, taping his mouth, and dumping him into Sungai Padang Terap. Investigators believe the victim was abducted after recognising the suspects during a break-in at his home. It was previously reported that one of the suspects, a contractor, was allegedly a gambling addict who used RM16,000 from Sabari's bank account to gamble in Batam, Indonesia.

Local councillor charged with raping woman at laundrette
KOTA BARU: A local authority councillor was charged at the Sessions Court here today with raping a 29-year-old woman late last month. Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, was charged before judge Zulkifli Abdullah under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction. He is accused of raping the woman at a laundrette in Kuala Krai about 2pm on May 29. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein. Jaya pleaded not guilty to the charge. Kamarul proposed bail be set at RM30,000 with additional conditions, including a warning not to disturb the victim. Ariff requested that bail be set at RM15,000, citing his client's responsibilities as a leader in the Indian community and the fact that he has 12 children, including stepchildren. The court allowed bail at RM15,000 with two sureties and fixed July 15 for mention. The accused was also ordered to report to the nearest police station once every two months.

Policeman under probe for inappropriate gesture, language towards woman in viral clip
KUALA LUMPUR: A policeman is under investigation following the circulation of a viral video on social media showing an interaction with a woman that allegedly contains inappropriate language or gestures deemed insulting. Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the incident came to light when the Pandan Indah police station chief came across the 90-second clip on Instagram around 5pm yesterday. He said the video was initially uploaded on TikTok by a user before going viral on Instagram. "The video is believed to show an interaction between the policeman and a woman, during which inappropriate language or gestures allegedly insulting the woman were used," he said. As such, Azam urged those involved in the video to come forward to assist with the investigation. This, he said as the case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for words or gestures intended to insult a person's modesty, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or services. "If convicted, Section 509 carries a punishment of up to five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both while Section 233 provides for a fine not exceeding RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both," he said in a statement. Azam also said that the policeman involved has been identified and removed from active duty pending further investigation. "An internal disciplinary investigation is also being carried out, together with the probe" he said.
