Thoothukudi councillors oppose water tariff hike, urge road repairs at council meeting

Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy announced that the work to widen the Puckle Canal by five metres has been initiated. The 6-km stretch of the canal, beginning from Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown, will be widened in such a way that the cement roads on both sides of the canal are not damaged.
The announcement was made at the Thoothukudi Corporation Council meeting on Thursday.
Several councillors raised concerns about several issues, including the decision to increase drinking water charges. They said that since the property tax and professional tax had been increased, the decision to increase water charge should be revoked. They urged the Corporation to control the stray dog menace in the city, causing great distress to the public.
AIADMK councillor Manthiramoorthy said cracks had been developing in the newly constructed Urban Health and Wellness Centre at Caldwell Colony. He said the facility, which was meant for the poor and underprivileged people, was showing signs of structural failure, in just 20 days after its inauguration. He urged the Corporation to take action in the matter.
The councillors called for immediate repair of storm-water drains and roads that were damaged during the underground drainage (UGD) project before the onset of monsoon. They stressed that all parts of the Corporation must be provided with proper roads and street lights.
The Mayor said the roads in Wards 15, 16, 17, 18, 49 and 50 had been damaged because of UGD work and all these roads would be restored within two months. Similarly, roads in Wards 4, 5, 9, 10 and 11 had been damaged because of a 24x7 water supply project work and these roads also would be relaid within three months. These works were part of the broader proposal to relay 964 new roads across the Corporation, he added.
He said five acres of land had been allotted to a private NGO at Tharuvaikulam dump yard to rehabilitate stray dogs. The organisation was yet to begin its operations.

Coimbatore Corporation urges public to use Namma Kovai App and helplines to report civic issues

The Coimbatore Corporation has urged the public to report grievances and civic issues through the Namma Kovai mobile application and dedicated phone numbers for each zone. To ensure timely redressal of complaints related to roads, streetlights, garbage collection, and other basic amenities, the Corporation has made available grievance and suggestion registers at all ward offices across the five zones — East, West, North, South, and Central — covering 100 wards in total. Residents can visit the respective ward offices and record their complaints or suggestions in these registers. In addition to visiting ward offices, residents can also use the Namma Kovai mobile app, available for download on Android devices on Google play store, to submit their grievances digitally. Residents can also register complaints by calling the dedicated helpline numbers for each zone: 89258 40945 for East Zone, 89259 75980 for North Zone, 89259 75981 for West Zone, 90430 66114 for South Zone, and 89259 75982 for Central Zone. HDMC streamlines permissions for Ganeshotsav mandals

Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has devised a streamlined approach by establishing a single-window clearance mechanism for Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandals. This system aims to facilitate timely permissions whilst enabling authorities to monitor the use of palster of paris (PoP) Ganesha idols effectively. The system aims to streamline the process of granting permissions and enforce regulations effectively. Under this system, Ganeshotsava mandals are required to submit their applications via the single-window system no less than 20 days prior to the festival. They must include the purchase receipt of their Ganesha idol. The Corporation will examine several factors, including the venue, safety protocols, environmental adherence, and whether the ordered Ganesha idol is made of clay or PoP. The system will maintain digital records of all registered mandals and track their compliance with eco-friendly practices. Officials will conduct regular inspections to ensure no PoP idols are installed or sold within the municipal limits. HDMC plans to coordinate with local artisans and encourage them to create clay idols instead. To support this transition, the municipal body will organise workshops for its officials and staff to educate them about PoP and clay idols, and how to identify them. They will also provide designated spots for idol immersion with proper facilities to collect the remnants. The Corporation has decided to impose stern action on mandals found violating the guidelines. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali said that the single-window system would commence operations on Tuesday. The system will feature two offices - one each in Hubballi and Dharwad. These offices will incorporate staff from various departments including HDMC, Hescom, forest, fire, and other relevant authorities responsible for issuing necessary permissions. The early implementation of this process aims to effectively enforce the prohibition on PoP idols. He further stated that Ganeshotsav Samitis will need to present purchase receipts or bills for the idols, facilitating easier verification of PoP usage and promoting the adoption of clay idols. This time, the single-window system to receive applications for installing community Ganapati idols will be opened well in advance. This proactive approach aims to ensure that mandals have sufficient time to secure their bookings for clay Ganesha idols, said Ghali.

Undertake one ward work at a time: Trichy mayor

1 2 Trichy: Trichy mayor Mu Anbalagan on Tuesday inspected the ongoing underground drainage (UGD) phase IV work near Khajamalai in ward 60 and instructed corporation officials and contractors to complete pipeline installation work in one ward at a time. The instruction comes in the wake of contractors digging roads across wards simultaneously, thereby disturbing public movement and delaying repair work. "Contractors were told to complete the entire work in one ward and then move to the other wards, as monsoon is fast approaching. They have also been instructed to install manholes immediately. Barricades will be placed at the work sites to ensure public and workers' safety," the mayor told TOI. Areas left out in phases II and III, such as Kuzhumani Road (ward 8), Vayalur Road (ward 25), a part of Karumandapam (ward 55), Ponmalaipatti (ward 46), and the KK Nagar and K Sathanur areas in wards 63, 64, and 65, will be covered in phase IV of the UGD project under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. Learning bitter lessons from phases II and III of UGD, during which residents complained of workers digging all major and residential roads altogether and extensively affecting the road connectivity of interior residential areas, the mayor said the engineering department was urged to monitor and expedite the pipeline installation before the onset of the northeast monsoon.
