On a recent episode of Mind the Game, LeBron James' new podcast, the two-time NBA MVP opened up about the deep influence Hip-Hop and urban culture had on his formative years.
For the Hall of Famer, who grew up in Canada, it wasn't just basketball that captivated him—it was the entire world that came with it.
Steve Nash is introduced to the new Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor during the NBA game against the Utah Jazz at Footprint Center on October 28, 2023 in Phoenix, Arizona. The Suns defeated the Jazz 126-104.
'Started playing basketball, fell in love with it,' Nash recalled, describing his early infatuation with the sport and the culture that surrounded it.
'Like the first Air Jordan 1s, the Spike Lee commercials, right when I was in the eighth grade, when I started playing. I was like, this world's amazing.'

Now 51, Nash reflected on how the excellence and artistry of Black athletes and entertainers shaped not only his game but his sense of identity.

'Let's also just be real,' he said. 'I wanted to be Black. All of the best players in the world were Black, all the best rappers, you know. So I'm trying to emulate anyone who had something about them.'
Nash's honesty struck a chord, shedding light on how urban culture provided a foundation for his creativity on the court.
Drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the 1996 NBA Draft, Nash would later be traded to the Dallas Mavericks, teaming up with Dirk Nowitzki to form one of the superior tandems in the league.

After rejoining the Phoenix Suns, with whom he enjoyed his prime years in the league, in 2004, Nash would also spend a few seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers before calling it quits in 2015.

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018, Nash averaged 14.3 points and 8.5 assists across a storied career. But beyond the numbers, his journey reveals how culture—particularly Black culture—can inspire and shape greatness, even from afar.

Blockbuster Four-Team NBA Trade Idea Lands Lakers Two New Key Players

Blockbuster Four-Team NBA Trade Idea Lands Lakers Two New Key Players originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After acquiring Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in February, the Los Angeles Lakers were projected to compete for the championship this year. Advertisement The Lakers were the third seed in the West this year, the second-highest seed LeBron James has had with the purple and gold since signing with Los Angeles in the summer of 2018. Doncic, James and the Lakers faced the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of this year's playoffs. Los Angeles had home-court advantage in the best-of-seven series. However, Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves beat the Lakers in five quick games. James, who had never lost in the first round of the playoffs before joining Los Angeles, has lost in the first round three times with the Lakers. For James and Doncic to win a championship together, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has to surround the All-Stars with better role players. Los Angeles Lakers stars Luka Doncic and LeBron James could benefit from this NBA trade idea. Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images With that said, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report proposed that Los Angeles acquire Jakob Poeltl from the Toronto Raptors and Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls in a four-team trade with the Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors. Advertisement In Pincus' trade idea, the Raptors would get Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jalen Smith and Jevon Carter, the Bucks would get RJ Barrett, Gradey Dick, Chris Boucher, Ja'Kobe Walter and Gabe Vincent, the Lakers would get Ball and Poeltl and the Bulls would get Dalton Knecht, Jarred Vanderbilt, Shake Milton and AJ Lawson. Poeltl appeared in 57 games for the Raptors this season. He averaged 14.5 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 62.7% from the field. The 29-year-old will make $19.5 million next season. Meanwhile, Ball appeared in 35 games this season after missing two years in a row with a serious knee injury. The UCLA product averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the Bulls. Ball began his career with the Lakers. He'll make $10 million next season. Former LeBron James Teammate Reveals What Lakers Star Did Twice that Michael Jordan Couldn't Do Once

Former LeBron James Teammate Reveals What Lakers Star Did Twice that Michael Jordan Couldn't Do Once originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Michael Jordan and LeBron James are two of the greatest players in NBA history. The basketball icons have combined to win nine MVPs, 10 championships and 10 NBA Finals MVPs. Advertisement Jordan won five MVPs, six titles and six NBA Finals MVPs with the Chicago Bulls in the '90s, while James is a four-time MVP, a four-time champion and a four-time NBA Finals MVP. He has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice), Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers. The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) debate between Jordan and James is one of the most discussed topics in basketball discourse. One of James' former teammates recently said he's going with The King over Jordan every time because he thinks James did something twice that Jordan couldn't do once. One of LeBron James' former teammates is going with The King (left) over Michael Jordan. © David Richard-Imagn Images Shane Battier, who won two championships with James in Miami, doesn't think Jordan could have won two rings with him as his starting power forward. Advertisement "LeBron did something twice that Jordan I don't think could have done once," Battier said on the YouTube show "Pablo Torre Finds Out." "He won two NBA titles with Shane Battier as his starting power forward. No way, no way Jordan could have done that. "As great as Jordan was, LeBron dragged me across the finish line." James and Battier helped the Heat win titles in 2012 and 2013. James won back-to-back MVPs and NBA Finals MVPs with Miami. While Battier is clearly being self-deprecating in his take, he is only half right about being the Heat's starting forward. He started every game of the 2012 NBA Finals but did not crack the starting lineup in any of the Heat's 2013 playoff games. Advertisement Jordan, who went 6-0 in the NBA Finals, is first in NBA history in points per game in the regular season and postseason. He has also scored the most points (63) in a playoff game. James, who is 4-6 in the NBA Finals, is first in NBA history in points. He's the only player ever to rank top five all-time in points and assists. The GOAT debate between Jordan and James likely will never end, but Battier is going with James because the future Hall of Famer helped him win two rings. Phoenix Suns' Devin Booker survives Flagstaff 'ambush' by kids, praised for act of kindness

Devin Booker seems to always find time for young fans. Even when golfing. An Instagram post is circulating of the Phoenix Suns star recently stopping in a golf cart in Flagstaff to give some young fans some attention, many of whom were wearing his jersey. Advertisement The video included the caption: "So this happened yesterday……. I got to watch these kiddos meet their idol, a moment that just sticks with you. The pure joy on their faces was like actual magic!! "And Devin… what a class act. He was so kind, patient he's an absolute gem of a human. Also, sorry for the mid-golf ambush Boook." This isn't the first time Booker has made some children's day (or year) with an act of kindness. In April, he bought golf balls from some children in Flagstaff, apparently working on his golf game some more in the cooler weather. And just a day prior to that, he stopped to purchase lemonade at some children's lemonade stand in the Valley. No wonder Booker is loved in Phoenix.
