Northumberland: Burglar who triggered 'Home Alone-style trap' is jailed

Sky News19-02-2025

A burglar who was caught after triggering a Home Alone-style trap at a property in Northumberland has been jailed.
Paul Howell, 56, was attempting to break into a property in Blyth - but fled when a bucket of water soaked his feet after tripping a hidden line of string just before 3am on 9 November last year, police said.
The householders set the trap following reports of a number of attempted burglaries.
Northumbria Police said Howell, of Blyth, was arrested and charged with attempted burglary after the occupants checked their CCTV footage.
In the 1990 movie Home Alone, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, set a series of elaborate traps for two bungling burglars after his family accidentally left him by himself in their Chicago house at Christmas.
Howell was also charged in connection with two separate burglary offences the following week at another address in Blyth, when he forced entry into a property before stealing items including jewellery and bikes.
Much of these items were recovered at Howell's house in the town.
The force said Howell pleaded guilty to all charges at Newcastle Crown Court in December.
He was jailed for three years and seven months on Tuesday.
Detective Constable Jon Mullen, who led the investigation, said: "Burglary is an invasive crime which sadly leaves people feeling unsafe in their own homes.
"Howell is a prolific offender who is now facing a lengthy spell behind bars following this sentence."

Two boys and girl arrested after 15-year-old seriously injured

Three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured in Sunderland. Police were called by the ambulance service to an injured teenage boy on Margaret Terrace in New Herrington at about 6.10pm on Friday, Northumbria Police said. Emergency services attended the scene where the boy, aged 15, had sustained serious injuries consistent with being caused by a bladed article, the force said. He was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening and remains in a stable condition. His next of kin have been informed. Northumbria Police added that the investigation is at an early stage but it is understood the boy had been assaulted within the grounds of Herrington Country Park. Two boys, aged 16, and a girl, aged 15, were arrested in connection with the report on suspicion of assault and have been further arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the force said. They remain in police custody. Chief Superintendent Nicola Walker, of Northumbria Police, said: 'This is a serious incident which saw a young boy assaulted – and we wish him well as he is treated in hospital. 'I would like to reassure our communities that we're carrying out extensive inquiries to understand what happened, with three people in custody being questioned by police. 'Our officers remain in the area to offer reassurance and investigate, which involves some search activity within Herrington Country Park. 'While inquiries remain at an early stage, it is believed some of those involved could be known to each other.' She added: 'We know this is a high footfall area, and it's likely there were lots of people in and around the park at the time of the incident. 'If you were in the area, or you witnessed anything, then please reach out and share any details with us as soon as possible.' Anyone with information or footage should send Northumbria Police a direct message on social media or use live chat and report forms on the force's website, or call 101, quoting reference number: NP-20250606-0954.

'Mass shooting' thwarted at Michigan high school graduation; one suspect arrested, another at large, officials say

What began as a fist fight at a high school graduation in Michigan on Tuesday has turned into a search for a 20-year-old suspect in what officials are calling a prevented mass shooting attempt. Oakland County authorities are searching for 20-year-old Jamarion Jaryante Hardiman — who is currently on probation for a weapons offense — in connection with the attempt at the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac (ATAP) graduation, Sheriff Michael Bouchard announced in a press conference on Friday. Another 19-year-old suspect is in custody, whose identity is not being released until charges are filed. Bouchard said the 19-year-old suspect also has a criminal history involving weapons. Oakland County Sheriff deputies were initially dispatched at 6:40 p.m. to the graduation held at the United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM) property for a fight. A person approached deputies at the scene and informed them a family member had seen a threat posted on Snapchat to shoot up the ceremony, Bouchard said. Authorities are not sure of the post's specific wording, as it has been taken down, but witnesses said it was along the lines of "was going to shoot up the crowd," Bouchard said. The two suspects, both Pontiac residents, were identified as individuals who were part of the fight and had been seen putting packages under cars in the parking lot when authorities arrived, according to Bouchard. Working with the UWM security team and their camera system, officials recovered two fully-loaded weapons at the scene. Each weapon also had a 40-round magazine. "So just those two weapons without changing magazines, had 80 rounds of potential firepower," Bouchard said. "Shooting into a graduation, you can only imagine the outcome of that." One of the suspects, who Bouchard did not specify, was carrying a pink, AR-style pistol with the loaded magazine in a backpack that was stashed under a vehicle when officers arrived. The other weapon recovered was a Glock semi-automatic handgun with a 40-round stick magazine. It is unknown if the suspects once attended the charter school, but Bouchard said they did have friends and relatives at the graduation and "ongoing disputes with individuals in the community." The sheriff said the motive behind the attempted shooting is unclear. The other parties involved in the disputes are not cooperating with authorities, according to Bouchard. "While a brief physical altercation did take place inside the venue, it was quickly handled by staff and security, and those involved were promptly removed," the school wrote in a social media post. "Thankfully, no one within the ceremony was harmed, and we were able to continue and complete our beautiful commencement celebration without further disruption." The 19-year-old suspect fled the scene, but was found after the graduation. Bouchard said he is 'confident' Hardiman will be located. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding Hardiman's whereabouts to call 911. Bouchard advised community members not to try to apprehend or approach the suspect. When asked by reporters if Bouchard had anything to say to Hardiman, he replied: 'Turn yourself in. One way or another we're going to get you. Make it easier on yourself and the community.'
