The Woodring Wall of Honor in Enid remembers fallen soldiers
ENID, Okla. (KFOR) — Unable to speak for themselves, fallen soldiers must rely upon the family and friends who knew them. Jesse Mitchell, who died in a North Korean prisoner of war camp, National Guardsman Paul Howell, who died in a car wreck last year were two names spoken at this year's Memorial Day ceremony. Retired Col. Jerry Shiles, one of several speakers, lost a nephew to an IED in Afghanistan. He and family members of the fallen all had special reason to set aside this national holiday to remember. 'I know how important it is for the families to recognize the service of their family members,' says Shiles, 'and especially those they've lost.' In the 25 years since the Woodring Wall of Honor and Veterans Park opened, thousands of names have been added to the rolls. Tim Vanover's father Elmer was one of the few survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March during World War II, but Tim argued that his dad left part of himself in POW Camp 17. He insisted, 'Some veterans died but they didn't physically die. The way I look at it, Dad pretty much gave his life.' Lori Lenz's father Squire Utsler didn't talk much about his years in the Pacific as a Marine sniper during WWII. She learned what she could from his letters home which she compiled in a book. She also related her father's reluctance to honor anyone other than his fallen comrades. 'He would have been grumbling and saying, 'oh I don't want that award,' she says of his inclusion to the Wall of Honor. Former Enid Mayor Doug Frantz lost many of his fellow classmates who were part of the 1967 Marine Officers School. During a speech, he recalled, 'We took about 390 2nd Lieutenants to Vietnam that year. 40 of them, around 10 percent, have their names on the Vietnam Memorial over there.' Current Vance Air Force Base Col. Carl Miller lost people he knew in combat, but took comfort in the words of Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address. 'That from these honored dead,' he quoted, 'We take increased devotion.' Grief and honor for those who gave 'their last full measure' to their country. As Taps played, survivors stood, veterans saluted. Their country took a moment to do the same, and to re-dedicate ourselves to give their sacrifice continued meaning. Watch: Burglar caught in Home Alone-style trap
The moment a prolific burglar was caught by a Home Alone-style bucket trap has been captured by a security camera. Paul Howell, 56, was jailed for three years and seven months after he was filmed prowling around the back of a house in Blyth, Northumberland at around 3am on Nov 9 last year. The homeowners became aware of his suspicious activity when the thief tripped over a string tied to a bucket of water which tipped over and soaked his shoes. Howell fled the detached property in Bondicar Terrace but was caught days later. The homeowners laid the simple trap at their home after it had been targeted by Howell on three occasions before. When they spotted the upturned bucket, they checked their security camera's footage and contacted police. Officers recognised Howell, who had over 100 convictions dating back to 1986, and arrested him at his home in Blyth. In the video, Howell can be seen with his face partially covered attempting to open a door and window before fleeing. He also urinated on the drive as he left the property, the court heard. Howell was also charged in connection with two separate burglary offences the following week at another address on Laburnum Avenue in the town. On that occasion, he forced entry into a property before stealing chainsaws, jewellery, bicycles, phones, laptops and cameras. Howell admitted to attempted burglary and burglary at Newcastle Crown Court and was jailed for 43 months on Monday. Det Con Jon Mullen, of Northumbria Police, said: 'Burglary is an invasive crime which sadly leaves people feeling unsafe in their own homes. 'Howell is a prolific offender who is now facing a lengthy spell behind bars following this sentence. 'This case is the latest example which demonstrates the importance of reporting anything suspicious in their communities.' Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Northumberland: Burglar who triggered 'Home Alone-style trap' is jailed
A burglar who was caught after triggering a Home Alone-style trap at a property in Northumberland has been jailed. Paul Howell, 56, was attempting to break into a property in Blyth - but fled when a bucket of water soaked his feet after tripping a hidden line of string just before 3am on 9 November last year, police said. The householders set the trap following reports of a number of attempted burglaries. Northumbria Police said Howell, of Blyth, was arrested and charged with attempted burglary after the occupants checked their CCTV footage. In the 1990 movie Home Alone, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, set a series of elaborate traps for two bungling burglars after his family accidentally left him by himself in their Chicago house at Christmas. Howell was also charged in connection with two separate burglary offences the following week at another address in Blyth, when he forced entry into a property before stealing items including jewellery and bikes. Much of these items were recovered at Howell's house in the town. The force said Howell pleaded guilty to all charges at Newcastle Crown Court in December. He was jailed for three years and seven months on Tuesday. Detective Constable Jon Mullen, who led the investigation, said: "Burglary is an invasive crime which sadly leaves people feeling unsafe in their own homes. "Howell is a prolific offender who is now facing a lengthy spell behind bars following this sentence."

Burglar jailed after triggering ‘Home Alone-style trap'
A burglar has been jailed after he was thwarted by a Home Alone-style trap, police have said. CCTV has been released which shows Paul Howell attempting to break in to a property in Blyth, Northumberland, but he is stopped when he trips a hidden string, which tips a bucket of water over his feet. The householders set the trap following a number of recent attempted burglary reports, Northumbria Police said on Wednesday. The force said Howell fled, after triggering the bucket shortly before 3am on November 9 last year, but the overturned bucket led the occupants to check their CCTV footage and report the offence. The 56-year-old was arrested and charged with attempted burglary. Howell was also charged in connection with two separate burglary offences the following week at another address in Blyth, when he forced entry into a property before stealing items including jewellery and bikes. Much of this property was recovered at Howell's house in the town. The force said Howell, of Disraeli Street, Blyth, pleaded guilty to all charges at Newcastle Crown Court in December and was jailed for three years and seven months on Tuesday. Detective Constable Jon Mullen, who led the investigation, said: 'Burglary is an invasive crime which sadly leaves people feeling unsafe in their own homes. 'Howell is a prolific offender who is now facing a lengthy spell behind bars following this sentence.' Mr Mullen added: 'This case is the latest example which demonstrates the importance of reporting anything suspicious in their communities. 'We will continue to act upon these reports and do everything in our power to bring those responsible for offences in our areas before court to face justice.' In the 1990 movie Home Alone, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, set a series of elaborate traps for two bungling burglars after his family accidentally leaves him by himself in their Chicago house at Christmas.
